Kguloian himself was sidelined in February due to an accident incurred during his work as a volunteer firefighter/ EMT, but returned as well in May. “I needed to get back in our classroom to see for myself that my class kids were okay,” said Kguloian. “It is remarkable what we have been able to accomplish together as a school, not only to keep our kids learning lessons from

our given curriculum, but also learning the life lesson that we can overcome anything and achieve more when we all work together as a cooperative team.” “School felt very satisfying, so to speak, after coming back from quarantine,” said student Tyler Niles. “Life felt more productive and Fridays felt earned.” “It felt super weird at first after being home for a long time,” said student Gabriela Rivera. “Even though we have to remain very cautious, I felt grateful and happy to be back.”

The Charity of the Month for August is

Long Island Live Steamers www.lilivesteamers.org

Located in Southaven County Park in Brookhaven (between exits 57 & 58 off Route 27 or exit 67 off the LIE) is the home of Long Island Live Steamers, a 501(c)3 nonproﬁt organization. They operate for the education and enjoyment of the public, and to preserve the history and wonderment of the glory days of railroading. All of their members are volunteers and very few of them are professional machinists, most of them are hobbyists. The uniting interest for them lies in steam power, railroad and having fun! The county has made about 8.5 acres of land available for them, which their railroad operates on. In fulﬁllment of the public trust use of park land, Long Island Live Steamers hosts visitor rides on our Public Run Days typically scheduled for the second and last Sundays of each month from the middle of May through the end of October. The hours of operation during a public run day are 10:30AM-3PM. There is no charge for rides on Run Days, however they accept donations of any size. Their operation is solely funded by donations. Although thousands of visitors enjoy visiting and riding on their railroad every year, most Long Islanders have either never heard of this organization, or if they have, have yet to visit them on one of their Public Run Days. Long Island Live Steamers may well be the best kept secret on Long Island. Almost everything you will see, ride on, or otherwise enjoy during your visit to Long Island Live Steamers was built, delivered, installed and maintained by their members.

The food supply at food banks historically drops off in summertime. Coupled with the pandemic and its after-effects, replenishing the diminishing food supply at this time is even more urgent. Enter Power to Feed Long Island – a partnership between Island Harvest Food Bank and PSEG Long Island to rally the Long Island community to donate food to support neighbors facing food insecurity. Continuing through the end of September, there will be largescale collection drives at several local supermarkets, with a goal of restocking warehouse shelves with the equivalent of 21,000 nutritious meals (for 2021). The program is part of United Way Worldwide’s Ride United Vaccine Access Campaign, which addresses unmet transportation needs for individuals and families. Long Island residents participating in ‘Ride United’ receive 2 free Lyft rides (up to $25 each way) to and from vaccination appointments located in Nassau or Suffolk Counties.
