During the visit, Colondona spoke about the jobs that men and women in the service do and the importance of supporting the troops. He also picked up 10 boxes that the second graders and their families had packed with items such as food, foam footballs, toiletries, playing cards and magazines, to be sent to troops on active duty in Afghanistan. The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 3 sessions will be on August 13th, 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. information. On August 16th at 6:30PM, The Social Brain is hosting a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association. This will be fun night with 250 plus baskets and prizes being raffled off; top raffles include brand new bicycles from Walmart and an overnight stay at Gurney’s in Montauk. All are welcome to attend! If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate. Additionally, on September 22nd all are welcome to come support this organization and enjoy an afternoon out at the ballpark with family and friends! The Social Brain is hosting a day at the ballpark to watch the Long Island Ducks game at 1:35PM. Tickets are $15.00 a person and parking is free. There will be a pre-game autograph session with all players on the field and children will be able to run the bases post game. East Islip High School student Taylor Edel was recently recognized at the Huntington Camera Club’s 29th annual High School Photography Competition, with her darkroom photograph earning an honorable mention. Edel’s work was selected from 1,262 entrants from 16 high schools across Long Island. Held since 1991, this Nikon-sponsored event honors outstanding high school photographers. Edel

received a certificate, cash award and an Ambassador Coin keepsake medallion, created by Nikon to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the company. “The photo was taken from the first roll of film that Taylor shot last fall,” said photographer teacher Joy Taylor. “Her assignment was texture, and this print stood out to me immediately as an exceptional darkroom print. I loved the simple subject matter as well as the composition. The

judges commented on the tonality and range of dark and light and mentioned how Taylor was able to create a very successful print despite the difficulty of manipulating prints created in a traditional darkroom setting. I’m very proud of Taylor.” “When I first took this photo at the beginning of the school year, I never imagined I would win a contest like this,” said Edel. “I’m very thankful to receive this honor.”

Habitat For Humanity Build South Oaks Hospital employees participated in a Habitat for Humanity build in Central Islip on June 28. The home was being constructed for a single mother of two teenage boys. The South Oaks team consisted of Carolyn Sweetapple, PhD, RN, CPA, the hospital’s executive director, as well as other senior leadership staff including physicians, nurses and social workers. Despite the scorching sun and high humidity, the team’s spirits

were lifted knowing that they were helping a family in need. “We want to increase our visibility in the community and give back to the people we serve,” said Dr. Sweetapple. “Participating in this home-building project also provided our hospital staff with an opportunity to get to know one another outside of the workplace in a different environment. In lifting heavy lumber and helping to build the upper floor of the home, we

realized that the sum of our parts – each of us working together – was greater than one.” “It is our mission to look after the mental health and well-being of each of our patients,” said Dr. Sweetapple. “By participating in a community service project with Habitat for Humanity, it is a reminder about how having the security of a home provides children with a much-needed, stable environment.”
