Located in Southaven County Park in Brookhaven (between exits 57 & 58 off Route 27) is the home of Long Island Live Steamers, a 501(c)3 nonproﬁt organization. They operate for the education and enjoyment of the public, and to preserve the history and wonderment of the glory days of railroading. All of their members are volunteers and very few of them are professional machinists, most of them are hobbyists. The uniting interest for them lies in steam power, railroad and having fun!

Even if you don’t have an interest in railroading, you might ﬁnd a job you’ll enjoy doing around the track. Long Island Live Steamers is in need of volunteer electricians, grounds-keepers, carpenters, signal maintainers and many other skilled individuals.

Although thousands of visitors enjoy visiting and riding on their railroad every year, most Long Islanders have either never heard of this organizaiton, or if they have, have yet to visit them on one of their Public Run Days. Long Island Live Steamers may well be the best kept secret on Long Island. Almost everything you will see, ride on, or otherwise enjoy during your visit to Long Island Live Steamers was built, delivered, installed and maintained by their members. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays are “scheduled” work days, where members come together and work on

The Inaugural Bike Rodeo and Bicycle Check event was cohosted by Councilman O’Connor, Assemblyman Jarett Gandolfo, Congressman Andrew Garbarino, the Central Islip Public Library, along with State and local Law Enforcement agencies on July 10, 2021. Islip Town Councilman, James P. O’Connor said “This event truly had a community-driven energy to it. Our friends at the New York State Police, New York State Park Police, Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, and Suffolk County Police Department (3rd Precinct) made this event a great success with their interactive bicycle obstacle courses, live K9 demos, and free give aways. Vendors such as Trek Bicycle conducted free

bicycle and helmet safety checks onsite.” Councilman James O’Connor continued “The COVID-19 pandemic has adversely impacted so many of us, in so many ways. I am continuously amazed by the generosity and sense of philanthropy that has echoed through the different communities here in the Town of Islip. For example, the East Islip Chamber of Commerce continued their give back efforts, to the entire Town of Islip community, by generously donating two boys bikes, two girls bikes, along with 11 safety helmets as free Raffle Prizes. This spirit of giving back to our community was also echoed by the Anchor Church of East Islip who also donated two bicycles as free raffle prizes.”

The ambitious cleaning along Main Street and the surrounding areas drew over 60 volunteers, who collected supplies and were given cleanup locations to tackle. The project was an initiative of veteran KIC volunteer and Islip resident Rebecca Rowsell, who has participated in numerous cleanups prior to leading her first endeavor as a KIC

Team Captain. “It was inspiring to see not only the large number of volunteers, but the different groups drawn to the project,” said KIC Executive Director Nancy Cochran. “We had scouting troops, Bank of America employees, KIC Junior Commissioners and community residents,” she added. Prior to the cleanup, volunteers met with Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi, Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter

and Islip Town Councilman James O’Connor, who all encouraged and thanked the group. Also on hand were KIC Chairman Emeritus Kay Erwood, Chairman Tiffany DiBenedetto and Islip/Special Project Commissioner Gene Murphy, representing KIC leaders in Islip. The cleanup netted about 15 bags of trash, but left behind a sense of community and satisfaction for the scores of participants.

National Recognition Of Islip Art Museum's "Forever Young" Virtual Exhibition

The Islip Art Museum’s Forever Young Sip-andSee Virtual Reception was a coast-to-coast success. This unique virtual exhibition which was sponsored by AARP was attended by a nationwide audience, bringing unimagined recognition to the Islip Art Museum. In past years Long Island artists 50 and older participated in a traditional exhibition complete with an in-person reception and people milling around the museum. But because of the shutdowns caused by the COVID-19, the “Art at 50 plus” series had to be reimagined. Curated by Holly Gordon, the virtual exhibition combined artwork and short audio statements from artists across New York State. Then Waldo Cabrera added music, visual effects, and animation to create an impactful and moving one hour exhibition. Last year’s “New Beginnings” show was so ground-breaking that it won a Long Island Press Award. AARP NY was so enthused

about the 2021 “Forever Young” exhibition that they promoted the opening ceremony nationwide to over 35 million members. Lynda Moran, the Executive Director of the Islip Arts Council was thrilled with the nationwide participation. She added that, “…being on this Sipand-See virtual exhibition with participants from so many other cities gave the virtual exhibition more life than it already had with the animation and sound impacting the artwork.” Participants that shared their reaction to the exhibition haled from Michigan, North Carolina, Illinois, West Virginia, Florida, Colorado, Arizona, and California. Much credit must be given to the Islip Arts Council, who manages the Islip Art Museum, for coming out of the pandemic in such a glorious way. Many arts organizations folded during the shutdowns, but IACs pivot to online programming and services has strengthened and expanded its reach

exponentially. The Islip Art Museum and AARP still have one more big event up their sleeves. Gordon and Cabrera are teaming up again later this year to curate an innovative virtual exhibit called “2 Together.” It is designed to blur generational boundaries and invite adults 50 plus to partner with a youngster 14-18 to create a work of art of their choosing together. In depth interviews with the exhibiting pairs will become part of this virtual exhibit. What the Islip Arts Team has accomplished during this lockdown is astonishing and we have so much more to offer that will contribute to the wellbeing of the Town of Islip community and beyond. Life’s WORC’s Family Center for Autism Awards 10 Scholarships

Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services, which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary – Celebrate 50! - recently awarded ten new scholarships valued at over $11,000. The scholarships were provided to those who are financiallychallenged so that they too can access Life’s WORC’s Family Center for Autism’s programs. These recent scholarships were awarded to individuals on the Autism Spectrum ranging in age from 10 to 22 years old. They are being used for classes and activities in the Children’s Breakfast Club, Friday Night Social Scene, Culinary Connections, Teen Zumba, Adult Baking, Teen Baking, Teen Technology, Teen Painting, among others. Family Center for Autism’s scholarship funds are generated through private donations and

enable the organization to offer scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500 to pay for any of its programs. Since its inception in 2015, the program has awarded approximately 250 scholarships valued at over $250,000. As a young reporter, Geraldo Rivera exposed the deplorable conditions that existed within the then largest institution in the nation serving children with

developmental disabilities. Rivera first learned about these conditions from Life’s WORC founder Victoria Schneps. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust services, and the programs and services of its Family Center for Autism.
