Poster Contest Winner East Islip first-graders at Connetquot and Timber Point elementary schools recently participated in the Suffolk County “Be Pool Smart” poster contest in the form of an art lesson, with Connetquot student Anna Humann earning the top prize. The intention of the contest was to showcase ways to be safe while swimming in the pool this
summer. The students brainstormed safety concepts, then came up with ideas of what they could draw and how they could design their posters. Each student drew two practice sketches, deciding what to draw and showcase, how to color, and which colors to use, then chose their best idea for the final version. Each Suffolk County legislative district chose one contender from their
submissions, and a final judging of those posters by the Suffolk County Legislature’s budget review office selected Humann as the overall winner. Her design will become the cover of this year’s “Be Pool Smart” countywide safety brochure. Accompanied by her parents, sister, grandmother and art teacher Christina Spera, Humann was presented with a proclamation by
Legislator Tom Cilmi. “This is such an accomplishment for Anna to have her design chosen,” said Spera. “She worked so hard in art class and I am so proud and excited for her. Congratulations to Anna and all of my first-grade students who participated.” Photo courtesy of: East Islip School District

GIRL SCOUT PATCH LAUNCH - Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter visited aerospace technology manufacturer, East/West Industries recently, where she was joined by the Girl Scouts of America to commemorate its new patch program. The new patches, launched by the Girl Scouts organization, help to promote leadership values, and the many career paths girls can explore that they otherwise wouldn’t consider. Girl Scouts who visited the aircraft manufacturing facility were given a tour by President Teresa Ferraro.

Volunteers Recognized
Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was joined by members of the Islip Town Board recently, to recognize the efforts of the Animal Lover’s League of Locust Valley, who together with James Heil, Commissioner, Town of Islip Department of Environmental Control, launched a Trap-NeuterReturn program in Islip, to humanely reduce the
community cat population. Eighteen volunteers in total attended the July Town Board meeting, to receive Certificates of Recognition for their service to the Islip community. Since launching in April, the TNR program has successfully spayed and neutered nearly 800 community cats, made possible through the tireless efforts of these volunteers.
Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was joined by members of the Islip Town Board and Town Public Safety officials recently, to honor three Town employees for their quickthinking responses to residents who were in lifethreatening situations. In 2017, while en-route to an interview for the current position he holds, Joseph Cassano, a parttime dispatcher with the Town of Islip, jumped into action to aid a postal worker whose leg was injured when he was struck by a car while removing mail from the back of his truck. Dispatcher Cassano placed a tourniquet on the postal worker’s leg, until
EMS arrived and treated the injury. Most recently, in June 2018, Dispatcher Cassano stepped in to save an unresponsive gentleman who was locked in his vehicle, by breaking the window and preforming CPR until EMS arrived at the scene. On June 30th, 2018 while on duty at Ronkonkoma Lake, Marina Guard Harry Torborg noticed an elderly woman who appeared to be out of breath and weakened by the extreme heat. He immediately assisted the woman to a bench, offered her water, and notified Marina Guard Supervisor John Hons. The two asked the woman where she was heading, to
which she replied, ‘home to Hempstead.’ The guards immediately notified Suffolk County Police, and contacted a local assisted living facility where the woman had been residing. She was treated at the hospital, released and is living in a long-term care facility. “I am proud to say that here in the Town of Islip, we are fortunate to have the finest employees,” said Supervisor Carpenter. “Their untiring efforts in ensuring the well-being of others, is demonstrated daily through their humility and compassion to those they have sworn to protect,” added the Supervisor.

Film Challenge For the second consecutive year, Islip High School’s video production students were chosen for the top 30 in the prestigious 10 Day School Film Challenge. Based on the theme of “A Film Within a Film,” theme, students Ryan DelGenio, Selia Mercado, Nancy Pramanand, James Rindos and Lauryn Valdez created the short film “Stuck in Bayside,” which advanced to the state finals. The state competition drew hundreds of film entries submitted by dozens of high schools. Competition rules required participants to
write, shoot, edit and score a movie in just 10 school days. After picking a theme out of a hat, the students had to use an exact line of dialogue in the film, use a specific prop and camera angle, and include the main character’s name and given background story. They also were required to create a screenplay and movie poster. The students could only work on their film during class and school hours, with no work allowed after school, at night, on weekends or at home. The top 30 films, including Islip’s “Stuck in Bayside,” were shown on
the big screen in front of peers, other schools, and judges at the 10 Day School Film Challenge awards held in Astoria, Queens. “Congratulations once again to our amazing Islip students,” said teacher Mike Reilly. “This was the second year that Nancy, Selia and Lauryn were selected for this honor. All three students will be attending college this fall and plan on concentrating their studies in the area of film and media communications. We hope to see them all on the real red carpet one day.”

East Islip High School students in technology education teacher James Connell’s college computer aided drafting course had the opportunity to intern this year at local company MEP Engineering, a firm that specializes in the three major engineering fields of mechanical, electrical and
plumbing. Staff members from MEP visited the school in September to discuss the opportunity, and several of the CAD students signed on for the experience. The apprenticeship was offered to numerous schools, and less than a dozen students were ultimately
selected. In order to gain a spot, each student had to be interviewed by head engineer German Chaikin. Once accepted, the apprentices went through basic CAD training and various exercises on how to perform everyday jobs at MEP. “The apprenticeship provided experience for students interested in becoming engineers,” said Connell. “There are many different aspects of being an engineer and my students had the opportunity to discover most of them at MEP.” Photo courtesy of: East Islip School District

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for 30 years and has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering a considerable amount, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping those in need look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island.
Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. Eileen is very dedicated to The Emergency Shelter of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Wyandanch, where she provides her services for free to their residents when they are open in the winter months. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, NYS Assemblyman Phil Ramos, and Islip Town officials joined together today for a groundbreaking ceremony marking the construction of a state-of-the-art spray park at Roberto Clemente Park. The much-anticipated spray park will offer various unique features and will be accessible to people of all ages and abilities. The spray park, modeled after the Town of Islip’s ever-popular Shipwreck Cove in Bay Shore, will incorporate a splash pad with zero-depth entry into two age-appropriate pool areas. The park will be an inclusive spray park, accessible to young and old alike, as well as to people of all levels of ability or disability. Plans include 30 water features as well as its own filtration
system, separate from the main swimming pool. Assemblyman Phil Ramos secured $2 million in state funding for the spray park, through the State and Municipal Facilities Program administered by the Dormitory Authority of New York State. “We are pleased to begin construction on this stateof-the-art spray park. It will bring another level of fun to Roberto Clemente Park, which children of all ages and abilities can enjoy. We are grateful to Assemblyman Phil Ramos for securing the $2M in state funding for the spray park,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “I am happy to see construction begin on what will be an outstanding recreational outlet for the young people of our community, said

Due to the joint effort with Supervisor Carpenter we can finally begin to bring back summer for our families and children.” The Town of Islip will use its own resources for the demolition, including a 25 ton excavator with a hydraulic jackhammer, in an effort to save taxpayer dollars and reduce the total cost of the project. The machinery will be used to break up concrete in preparation for construction, and will excavate approximately 50,000 lbs of soil. The bid will be advertised Thursday, July 26th, 2018, with documents ready for pick up.

Metamorphosis “We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” ~ Maya Angelou We all have a path, a journey we take through life. Some are relatively direct, with few bumps and curves along the way; others prove far more winding and full of detours. In the end, though, I believe we all reach the destination we are meant to. Eventually. Last week, I touched on some of the ways I go about my craft, and how my writing has evolved through the years. In speaking to the next generation of potential journalists, the best experience I can draw upon is my own. There was a time when I was in their shoes, sitting in high school classrooms and then college lecture halls, wondering where exactly this path I had chosen would lead. It was during those formative years that I looked to my own sources of inspiration in the writing field for guidance, absorbing their styles and studying their techniques for
some hint of how I could apply these skills to my own drafts and create a unique voice. Just today, in fact, I found myself perusing the archives of past “In Step” columns, searching for a tribute I had written following the passing of Ed Lowe, master storyteller, and one mentor I had the extreme good fortune to work with during my time here at South Bay. Seldom do we have the opportunity to meet our idols, let alone share in our mutual love of a particular craft. No matter the difference in age, or how vast the generational gap, there is simply no substitute for the wisdom of someone who has experienced those things you only dare to dream. If you had asked me back in my formative years where I saw myself in ten, fifteen years time, I probably would have shrugged and said, “Hopefully reporting from the clubhouse of the New York Yankees” or “traveling across the country ala Almost Famous, searching for the next big story to be featured in Rolling Stone Magazine.” Realistic? Perhaps
not entirely. But these were the people, and the positions, I admired from afar and wished to emulate. Maybe it was the sense of prestige I found attractive, the celebrity aspect. Fast forward into the real world of adulthood, and it wasn’t long before I discovered that, if you truly have a love for writing - or any particular skill - it truly doesn’t matter where you do it, what the topics entail or how much notoriety you gain in the process. The fact is, you can make a significant difference on any level, even within the confines of the local community you grew up in, surrounded by the family, friends and local followers you may be fortunate to gain along the way. And that is exactly what has happened, from this desk in Farmingdale, as I put fingertips to keyboard each week, drawing from my own life experiences and those who have inspired me. The path may not always be clear, but the passion has never wavered. That, above all else, is what makes the journey worthwhile.

Commercial fishermen have long suffered from unfair and inequitable quotas arbitrarily set by the federal government based on faulty data. Additionally, the current regulations related to the transfer of permits and licenses have thwarted the
proper operation of this industry.” “We must resolve these issues with our fishing community at the table in full participation. The economic survival of our commercial fishermen must be our ultimate priority. I, too, applaud the DEC’s efforts to fight for fair and equitable quotas and will continue my efforts to protect this vital industry,” said Senator LaValle. In March, the DEC retained the services of marine fisheries consultant George LaPointe, who will
facilitate the meetings. A former Commissioner of the Maine Department of Natural Resources, Mr. LaPointe will analyze and evaluate the current marine commercial licensing system and provide recommendations on how to improve and revise it. The topics to be addressed include, specifying qualifications for license issuance; license transferability; identifying means of entry for new participants in New York’s fisheries; apprenticeship; and resolution of the latent licenses issue.

Vito Giannola is the Vice President and Treasurer North America for Luxottica Group, a world leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of fashion, luxury, sports and performance eyewear, has been named Chairman of the American Heart Association’s 2018 Long Island Heart Walk. This year’s walk will be taking place on Sunday, September 16th at Jones Beach in Wantagh. In his current position, Vito leads the North American Corporate Treasury function, managing Luxottica’s portfolio of investments, risk and liquidity. In addition to his role as Treasurer, over his 32 years at Luxottica Vito has held many Director and Executive level roles.
In the early part of his career he managed the finance, operations and distribution divisions of the wholesale business, and was instrumental in developing the processes and policies necessary to address a business tripling in size. During this time, he was routinely called on to present earnings results to Luxottica’s largest global investors. Later on, Vito managed the M&A activities critical to Luxottica’s growth in North America. In 1995 there was the $1.5 billion acquisition of The US Shoe Corporation, the parent company of Lenscrafters. Four years later, an asset purchase of the eyewear business of Bausch and Lomb, brought the iconic Ray-Ban brand to the Luxottica portfolio; and in 2001, Luxottica concluded
the stock purchase of Sunglass Hut. Elected Chair
Suffolk resident and president/CEO of NYU Winthrop Hospital (Mineola, NY), John Collins, was elected chair of the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) at the group’s Annual Meeting held July 11th, 2018. His two-year term expires in 2020. Collins is a renowned
healthcare strategist and financing expert. His keen business foresight led to the successful acquisition of 60-plus faculty and community practices in over 150 locations. More recently, he led the hospital into an affiliation agreement with NYU Langone Health, enabling the two organizations
to expand, enhance, and clinically integrate the healthcare services of these two outstanding healthcare entities. He began his career at Winthrop in 1997 as chief financial officer. He later assumed the duties of chief operating officer, before being named president/ CEO in 2009. Under his leadership, NYU Winthrop Hospital was recognized in the first-ever edition of U.S. News and World Report’s Best Hospitals Metro Area Rankings for 10 highperforming specialties. Prior to joining NYU Winthrop Hospital, Collins served as chief financial officer at South Nassau Communities Hospital. Collins holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Queens College and is a certified public accountant.
WELCOMED TO CAPITOL - On Tuesday, July 24th, Congressman Lee Zeldin welcomed the 106th Rescue Wing, which operates out of Francis S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base in Westhampton Beach, New York, to the United States Capitol, during which he thanked them for their service and sacrifice in defense of our great nation. Grant Received Community Housing Innovations (CHI), a nonprofit housing organization, is looking for first-time homebuyers on Long Island who need down payment assistance. The New York State Affordable Housing Corporation recently awarded $1,000,000 to the agency to provide onetime down payment and rehabilitation assistance
grants to qualified homebuyers who wish to buy a home in Nassau or Suffolk County. “We are grateful to New York State Affordable Housing Corporation for providing CHI with this grant which will allow 40 families to purchase their first homes this year,” said Alexander H. Would he/she like a free, early-morning flight to Washington, D.C., for a one-day tour of WWII, Korean, Vietnam and other memorials? Visit the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier, meet officers from their military branch, and return that evening to Islip MacArthur Airport? You can go with them on this unforgettable adventure by becoming their guardian, in partnership with Honor Flight Long Island! Honor Flight Long Island (HFLI) is our local, nonprofit chapter of the national Honor Flight Network. HFLI organizes, hosts and pays for the biannual flights, which depart from Islip MacArthur Airport. As part of the day’s events, veterans and their
guardians (volunteers who make the trips possible) fly to Baltimore-Washington International Airport, where a motor coach takes them on a 50-minute drive to D.C. and the WWII, Korean and Vietnam memorials, to Arlington National Cemetery, and on to Air Force, Navy plus other memorials. HFLI President Bill Jones told the 50 Veterans who made the last D.C. trip on May 12th, 2018, “Your country said that it needed you, and you said yes, I will go.“ Jones said his group flies our local heroes to visit and reflect together at our national memorials. “Long Islanders who have a loved one interested in taking an Honor Flight, should contact us and we’ll make all the required arrangements.” He added they’re now lining up 2019 trips for eligible Vietnam veterans. Bill Jones lives
with his wife and daughter in Southampton, NY. Each trip includes 50 veterans who go for free, thanks to donations from across LI. They are accompanied by 50 guardians, next generation, able-bodied volunteers who donate $400 (tax deductible) to offset the day’s travel expenditures. If there is no family member to act as a guardian, don’t worry, HFLI has a roster of volunteers ready to step up for the privilege and donate the required fee. The trips are offered to veterans who have not yet visited these memorials in our nation’s capital. operating its Renters into Owners program, which administers New York State grants averaging $25,000 each for down payment and home improvements to income-eligible first-time homebuyers. Through this program, CHI has provided over $11 million in down payment assistance grants and free counseling to over 750 families and individuals. To be eligible, homebuyers must meet the definition of a firsttime homebuyer and have at least 3% of their own savings to contribute toward the purchase. For a family of four, income must not exceed $104,563. Other income requirements may be found on CHI’s website. Grant assistance is in the form of a deferred forgivable loan with no payments that declines over time, secured by a second mortgage lien. The owner must occupy the property for ten years to avoid paying back any of the assistance. Potential grantees must attend an orientation, qualify for a mortgage, and complete HUD-certified homebuyer education. Orientations are posted on CHI’s website at w w w. c h i g r a n t s . o r g .
