The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home. While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. There are many ways that you can become involved with RTLI, whether that be individually or as a company! Corporate sponsors are a huge help to the organization and it can benefit your company greatly as well. Corporate sponsors are companies that make the decision to fund a RTLI project for someone in need. Their employees will be able to participate in hands on work with the project they sponsor so their company can
have the chance to take part in a team building and community leadership opportunity. When they become a corporate sponsor, companies will get to see immediate positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled individual or a family in need, while demonstrating their company’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life right here on Long Island. These sponsors will also get acknowledged on the RTLI website, in their quarterly newsletter and on social media. Additionally, if you are a business professional and are interested in getting involved with Rebuilding Together Long Island, the opportunity is available. RTLI is now interviewing business professionals to become an integral part of their Advisory Board and help advance their mission, whether it be through financial contributions, in-kind donations, networking capabilities or another way. Lastly, this organization is looking for people to fill the following volunteer positions: Crew Members, Electricians, Plumbers and Home Visitors. Clear skies and a beaming sun welcomed a joyous crowd of family, friends and distinguished guests to East Islip High School’s 92nd commencement ceremony on June 26, to celebrate the Class of 2019 and the momentous milestone they have achieved. The event began with the seniors filing onto the football field, adorned in red caps and gowns, before Isabella Pasha and Maggie Ruland recited the Pledge of Allegiance and Victoria Tiernan performed the national anthem. In traditional fashion, four students – Alexandra Bertolini, Emily DaSilva, Karina Gallagher and Katelyn Spina – then sang the school’s alma mater. Principal Mark Bernard greeted the Class of 2019 before offering a heartfelt challenge. “I challenge you to be the best that you can be, to dream big, to work hard and to never accept failure,” Bernard said. “I challenge you to find a cure for cancer, to
work toward world peace and to leave this Earth better than it was when you came to be.” James Smalley, the salutatorian, then reflected on his journey as a student at East Islip High School and how the experiences they shared as classmates shaped them into kind, compassionate individuals. Bernard then honored a group of alumni from the Class of 1969 who were in attendance, and Kristen Bayreuther recognized the top 25 students in the senior class. Valedictorian Victoria Keenan’s words empowered her fellow graduates as they move on from this chapter in their lives. “Promise me that you will believe in yourself, even when others do not,” she said. “People are beautiful and wonderful, but they also have the power to be cruel. They can say things and do things that will make you feel powerless, that you are not good enough; but let me tell you this – you are enough. If there is one thing you will take
away from high school, let it be that.” Superintendent John Dolan wished the graduates well as he addressed them with powerful words of encouragement. “Now it is your time to go out into the world, to continue to make good, healthy choices and continue to help the ongoing evolution of our beautiful world,” he said. “Choose a career path where you are excited to go to work every day, where you are excited to work hard, to make those around you and the world a better place.” Following the presentation of diplomas, Class President Madison Lane delivered a nostalgic farewell address that took the new graduates on a final look back through their time as East Islip students. Just as the sun began to fade from view, the graduates exited the field with hopeful enthusiasm as they began the next chapter of their lives as alumni of East Islip High School.
Roundtable Enhances Student Voices
Islip Middle School recently created a Buccaneer Roundtable to enhance student voices and leadership under the larger umbrella of improving school culture and climate. Last year, the school’s Student Climate and Culture Committee created a survey that was administered to all students. When the results were analyzed, it was determined that as students went through their years at the middle school, they reported having a decreasing say in activities, events and opportunities. The committee designed the Buccaneer Roundtable to counteract that trend.
Teachers nominated students from each grade and level of academic performance to join. The goal was to create a crosssection of the student body that could represent the diversity of thoughts and opinions within the building. Every six weeks, the Roundtable meets – joined by administration and rotating members of the student committee – to discuss issues such as school policies and procedures, bullying and cyberbullying, lunch and recess, school safety, and student well-being. Students are asked to bring concerns from the student body to the meeting. Administration

then made changes based on student feedback, such as creating a policy in which eighth graders are allowed to choose new lunch tables and spend recess in the courtyard every Friday. “This is a positive thing for our school because everyone gets a voice and the students get to be heard,” said eighth grader and Roundtable member Keyara Hassell. “The students like it because they can tell us their problems or issues and we can try to fix them to make the school a better place. I enjoy being in the Roundtable.”

2019 EAST ISLIP VALEDICTORIAN AND SALUTATORIAN - East Islip High School’s Class of 2019 valedictorian and salutatorian are Victoria Keenan and James Smalley, respectively. Keenan, who finished with a weighted GPA of 108.20, is an accomplished musician, earning All-Eastern and All-State honors. An AP Scholar with Honor, she serves as president of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and secretary of the National Honor Society and is a member of the World Language Honor Society, Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York and the high school newspaper staff. Keenan will study music education at Ithaca College School of Music. Smalley, a National Merit Scholarship Program finalist and AP Scholar with Distinction, earned a GPA of 108.18. He serves as captain of the varsity boys track team and is a member of the National Honor Society, Science Honor Society, varsity boys soccer team and the SORTINO TO CHEER FOR UMASS - Alexa Sortino, a Class of 2019 graduate of East Exchange Ambulance of the Islips.
