The food drive is asking for donations of nonperishable items, such as pasta, rice, beans, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, mac and cheese, juice boxes, crackers, cookies, salt, pepper, cake/brownie mixes, canned tuna and chicken, stove-top stuffing, bottled fruit-ﬂavored drinks, oil and vinegar, soup, canned gravy, tomato sauce, condensed milk, pudding (boxed, not prepared) jello, apple sauce, canned vegetables

and fruit, cleaning supplies, laundry supplies, tissues, TP, paper towels. No dairy, frozen items or anything that can spoil. To make this even more personal and familyfriendly, they ask you to: - Include any favorite easy, inexpensive recipes or tips on making meals healthier and tastier. For instance, one adds fresh tomatoes and broccoli to mac and cheese. - Let your kids get involved. Let them write cards, draw pictures or do what they can to show the recipient kids some love. Maybe they want to use their allowance to buy a box of animal crackers, a packet of gummy bears or some other kid-friendly treat. Reverend Richard E. Simpson said, “I keep thinking of John 6 where large crowds gathered to hear Jesus. While many apostles became discouraged and wanted to go home, one little boy had a tiny lunch of 2 small fishes and 5 loaves of bread. He gave it to Jesus and it fed 5,000 people. Even the tiniest act of kindness, generosity and love plant the seeds of hope.” For more information, please call the church at 631-581-4950.

This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events. Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic. Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer: Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are:

career options by salary, understanding money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more. Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit. On Saturday, July 25, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Islip will be holding a drive-by food drop at the church. Volunteers will be standing in front of the church entrance at the corner of Montauk Highway and St. Mark’s Lane. Drop off your donations and they’ll do the rest! All donations will go to God’s Provision, Inc., a faith-based organization that distributes food pantries in some of the hardest hit regions in Suffolk County, NY. We’ve all seen the pictures: Food lines so long that they wrap around entire blocks. Some people get up as early as 3:00 a.m. to start standing so food doesn’t run out by the time they get to the head of the line. Today, 22% to 38% of American households are food insecure. According to the Hamilton Project, 14 million children went hungry just in the onemonth period of June 2020. Faith-based ministries are jumping in to help the best they can. Senator Tim Scott R-SC, spoke on the television show “The View” about his outreach, specifically in regard to testing. People might be more apt to walk to their church, he said, than to get in a car to drive

Warm weather beckons people outdoors to enjoy the outdoors. However, when the weather gets too hot, prolonged time outdoors can adversely affect overall health. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke pose significant threats to anyone who spends ample time outdoors in hot weather. The Mayo Clinic says symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, rapid pulse, dizziness, fatigue, moist skin with goose bumps, muscle cramps, nausea, and headache. When someone suffering any of these symptoms does not immediately move

into a cool location, they may develop heatstroke. Heatstroke arises when one’s body temperature climbs to 104 degrees, according to Penn Medicine. A body at this temperature may experience damage to the muscles, heart, kidneys, and brain. Flushed skin, altered mental state and rapid breathing may occur when suffering from heatstroke. A notable symptom of heatstroke is that perspiration stops completely. Rehydration, cooling the body and loosening tight clothes can help prevent serious consequences.

Their owners may need help taking care of them and in an effort to continue to support these animals in need, I will be hosting my 8th Annual Pet Food Drive in conjunction with Long Island Cares. My office will be accepting donations of pet food and pet supplies through August 14, 2020. For many of us, pets are a treasured part of our family. This wonderful

event truly benefits those in our community – especially the elderly and homebound. During these tough economic times, many people need a little extra help to care for their beloved pets. Long Island Water Conference Urges Residents To Reduce Irrigation Water Use services,” said LIWC Chairman Richard Passariello. “With most water use being attributed to irrigation systems, we urge all Long Islanders to shorten their irrigation cycles by several minutes to offset the significant increase in demand. This action alone will save a significant amount of water and allows Long Island’s water providers to continue working diligently to meet the water needs of residents.” While there is no water shortage as Long Island’s aquifer is plentiful, there are a limited number of supply wells throughout Long Island to draw the water from the ground. Long Island’s water infrastructure, while vast, is struggling to keep up with the demand for water while also keeping storage tanks full. Keeping storage tanks full is crucial to ensuring there is adequate supply and pressure when firefighters have to respond to an emergency.

Nassau County’s Lawn Watering Ordinance requires residences with a house number that is even—or is not numbered—to water their lawn on even-numbered days. Similarly, residences with a house number that is odd should water their lawn on odd-numbered days. In addition to adhering to all irrigation regulations in both Nassau and Suffolk counties, homeowners are urged to be conscious of water usage inside their homes. To help residents cut back on usage, the LIWC reminds the public of these water-saving tips: • Reduce your irrigation system’s watering per zone by 5 minutes. This will save approximately 20 percent on your overall usage.

The Long Island Water Conference (LIWC) is calling on residents to reduce water usage and observe their water supplier’s odd/even watering ordinances. Long Island is and continues to experience an inordinately dry stretch of weather that looks to continue for at least the next seven to ten days. As a result of the mostly dry conditions over the last month, water systems across the region are facing the possibility of experiencing reduced pressure due to a 400 percent increase in demand, mostly created by consistent use of irrigation systems. Residents are advised to abide by local irrigation ordinances, including running systems between 5:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. to avoid peak demand times. “We implore residents to reduce water usage to ensure Long Island water suppliers are able to maintain highpressure water for fire protection and other essential

Class Of 2020 Celebrates Strength And Perseverance

For Islip High School’s Class of 2020, the disappointments of the truncated end of their senior year were sweetened by a stirring in-person graduation ceremony in which every speaker gave testament to the class’s character, strength and perseverance. The school’s 95th commencement was divided into four sessions held at Bucs Stadium on the evening of June 26 and the morning of June 27. After greetings from Principal Jon LaRochester, and Student Union President Emily DeAngelis and Vice President Sydney Camenzuli, who served as emcees for each session, senior Nicholas D’Auria sang a stunning rendition of the national anthem. Board of Education trustees Danielle Flora and Kelly Vallette eschewed traditional graduation speeches, instead sharing a series of inspiring and humorous stories, quotes and anecdotes. “It may not be the same as in previous years, we may not all be together, but even though the seniors are behind Islip face coverings, eight feet apart from their fellow graduates, nothing can mask the fact that they are 262 amazing, special individuals,” Vallette said. “2020 had other plans and lessons for your class

and for all of us to learn, a completely unique and unanticipated turn in the road,” Flora told the seniors. “You are part of a graduating class that will be forever marked in history.” “What a journey you have all undertaken, what a set of experiences you have amassed, what a collection of life lessons you have gathered,” said LaRochester in his first commencement speech as principal. “We are gathered here today not just to celebrate your academic accomplishments, but more importantly, to celebrate the strong men and women you have become. were cheered on by faculty and staff. Each graduate received a yearbook and gift bag to commemorate their big milestone. “Fifth graders, it’s all about you today,” JFK Principal Deborah Smith told the school’s new grads. “We are so proud of your accomplishments and wish you the best as you

move on up to the middle school.” “It was such a pleasure to see all of our fifth graders at this farewell,” said RCK Principal Janet Jones. “Congratulations and best wishes to the East Islip High School Class of 2027!”
