Two graduating seniors from East Islip High School’s Class of 2021, Peter Carino and Olivia Zhang, recently received appointments to the U.S. Naval Academy after an extremely rigorous and demanding application

process. Both graduates were honored on June 9 in a ceremony in the school’s outdoor pavilion presided over by USNA Blue & Gold Officer Mary Ann Coughlin, who is also a retired East Islip teacher.

“I have wanted to serve in the military since the eighth grade,” Carino said. “I planned to enlist after college. However, the Naval Academy seemed like the best option for me to take on a leadership position and become an

officer. I look forward to the challenges I am soon to embark on throughout my years as a midshipman. I plan on majoring in history and pursuing a career in special operations upon graduation.” “My desire to join the Navy was fueled by my passion to work in the aviation community,” Zhang said. “As a first-generation student and first-generation American with no family military

history, wanting to join the Navy was unconventional, but I had an interest in aviation and aeronautics and I also had a desire to serve the nation. I visited the Naval Academy when I was 12 years old and from then on, I made it my goal to attend USNA after high school. I joined the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps when I was 13. Throughout over four years in the program, I was given

Individual scorers included Deirdre Carney (second place in the pentathlon), Kniff (fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles), Motto (fourth in the 100-meter dash), Petersen (second in 1,500-meter), Scandale (fourth in the 400-meter and fifth in the 200-meter), Danielle Simonetti (second in both the 800-meter and 2,000-meter steeplechase), Olivia Simonetti (second in high jump and third in 800-meter), Smalley (third in 1,500-meter), Tucci (fifth in the 3,000-meter), Sophia Worst (fifth in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles) The Lady Redmen concluded their season on June 17 at the Section XI individual championships. Olivia Simonetti high jumped 5 feet 1 inch to place fifth overall. Scandale ran a personal record time of 60.33 to take sixth overall. Smalley continued her record-breaking season by taking third overall in the 800-meter with a time of 2:16.2, capping off a remarkable season in which Smalley established herself as the best 800-meter runner in school history, shattering the previous school record by over four seconds. The highlight of

the Suffolk County meet was the performance of the 4x800 meter relay team of Petersen, Danielle Simonetti, Olivia Simonetti and Smalley, who won their race by a commanding 20 seconds, earning the title of county champions. Their time of 9:25.99 was the fastest in school history, and it was the first time in East Islip history that a relay team won the county championship. This 4x800 meter relay team finished their season ranked No. 1 on Long Island and No. 3 in New York State. “This season was outstanding, and without question, the best the school has ever seen,” said coach John Reynolds. “Every day, the girls came out with a purpose and the results proved that. The bigger the meet, the better the result. They yearned for the best competition and when given the opportunity, showed they were the best kids to run in Suffolk County. I could not be prouder to have coached these wonderful young ladies. Their effort and determination showed me that they will not only be successful on the track but in whatever they put their focus to in life.”

East Islip Boys Track Team Takes Fifth In Divisionals

East Islip High School’s boys varsity track team recently finished in fifth place in their division championship. Josh Terhune led the way by winning the 800-meter race with a time of 2:00.03, one of the fastest times in the county, and placing fourth in the high jump. EI’s 4 x 100 relay team of Joe Margo, Vinny Mariani,

Peterson Lowman and Kevin Smith also took first place. Second-place finishers included Jason Conzo in pole vault, Smith in the 100-meter race and Javier Ornella in shot put. The 4 x 400 relay team of Conzo, Nick Groneman, James Kelly and Josh Terhune finished in third place, running an impressive

race, while Ryan Auffant place fourth in the discus throw. “It was a great team effort watching the boys battle through such tough conditions,” said coach Ralph Tubello. “Congratulations to all the champions and place winners.”

East Islip High School’s girls varsity track and field team won their first league championship since 2016, defeating Westhampton Beach on June 4 by a score of 80-60. Building on this victory, the Lady Redmen continued to make history by hosting the division championships for the first time on June 9, and winning the first division championship in school history. East Islip scored a whopping 113 points, far ahead of the 72 points tallied by the second-place team. East Islip’s squad was led by division champion Joy Petersen in the 2000-meter steeple chase and Hannah Smalley in the 800-meter. The 4x400-meter relay team of Grace Micali, Jenna Scandale, Olivia Simonetti and Smalley won the division championship and set a new school record time of 4:09.35. The 4x800meter team of Hailey DeHaas, Petersen, Danielle Simonetti and Sam Tucci also won the division championship with a time of 10:00.84. The 4x100meter relay team of Kayla Kniff, Melissa Mirabelli, Gianna Motto and Ayanna O’Neal took 4th place in a season best time of 52.84 seconds.

Momentum at South Bay for Rehabilitation and Nursing recently partnered with the NY Blood Center to hold a blood drive for community and staff members at their East Islip facility. The staff at Momentum joined members of the community to aid the urgent call for blood donations. The event was

a great success with 50 pints of blood donated to the NY Blood Center. Over 75 community members, seniors, and healthcare workers participated in the drive. Canceled blood drives over the COVID-19 pandemic have led to blood shortages in New York and across the nation. “The entire staff see Momentum as a member

“Every time I think we’re getting low, someone hands me a check. One day the shortfall was so great I was afraid we wouldn’t be able to support all of our locations, but days before St. Mark’s had a food drop which brought in 24,000 donations and enabled us to continue.” Food insecurity is a serious matter, said one organizer, and we also try to keep the food drops light enough to draw people in, adding that last December even Santa showed up to help sort. “The ultimate goal, after all, is to feed the hungry, so you want people to come,” she said. The food drives are nonsectarian; you do not need to be a parishioner or an Episcopalian to donate. In fact, many conduct little food drives by approaching neighbors, friends and family--then bring it all to us on the day of the food drive. We, in turn, send it to God’s Provisions. Some suggested items include: pasta, rice,

beans, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, mac and cheese, juice boxes, crackers, cookies, salt, pepper, cake/ brownie mixes, canned tuna and chicken, stuffing mix, soup, canned gravy, tomato sauce, condensed milk, pudding (boxed, not prepared) jello, apple sauce, canned vegetables and fruit, kid-friendly treats, cleaning supplies, laundry supplies, toiletries, pet food, baby products, etc. Please don’t donate anything that can spoil-even chocolate can be iffy because if it’s hot, it can melt.
