The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home. While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.
Their President Stella Hendrickson relates calling their organization for help to calling a neighbor. She mentioned, “Calling Rebuilding Together Long Island for help is like calling that person in your neighborhood that we all wish we had. You know the one...the one who is always working around his house and yard and seems to know how to take care of all the many little things that need to be taken care before they turn into major issues. That’s who the volunteers of RTLI are. They are your neighbors, retired from all walks of life and looking to help others and the communities of Long Island be safer and better. Some were teachers and principals, some engineers, some were IT professionals. They are a mixture of professions, but they all have one common goal, which is to help those in need.” Does your home have working smoke alarms, or have you removed the batteries because they were old and “chirping”? Not to worry, RTLI has batteries with a 10-year life span. Do you need grab bars to help eliminate nasty falls and a dreaded costly hospitalization? No problem, they’ll take care of it. Do you need a wheelchair ramp so that you can leave your home safely? RTLI can
You may be wondering how this organization does all of this for free. Some of their program funds come through grants and corporations, but some also come from everyday people like you and me. RTLI does not receive government funding. They do so much for the community and because they are an organization of volunteers, they can do a lot with a little and make every dollar count. If you would like to make a donation to this organization you can do so by sending it to: Rebuilding Together Long Island, 208 Route 109, Suite 204, Farmingdale, NY 11735 or by a credit card at rebuildingtogetherlongisland. org/make-a-donation. Additionally, they are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills because training is available. (All volunteers must be at least 18 years old.) They are also looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection.

This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk.

Sortino To Cheer For UMass
Alexa Sortino, a Class of 2019 graduate of East Islip High School, has signed to join the cheerleading team at the University of Massachusetts this fall. She will major in communications. “UMass has a good business school as well as a good cheer team,” Sortino said of her selection. Sortino has been an East Islip cheerleader since age 6. The 2019 All-County athlete and Scholar-Athlete was twice a junior varsity team captain and earned the 2018 MVP award. As varsity cheer captain, she led the team to the UCA Nationals for the first time in East Islip history. She also served as an EICC youth league coach. During her educational career at East Islip, Sortino was a member of East Islip’s National Honor Society, served as secretary of the Foreign Language Honor Society and sang in the Honors Choir.
National Honor Society East Islip High School’s National Honor Society invested 55 members in a June 11 ceremony held in the middle school auditorium. Speakers included Co-Presidents Jolie Lenox and Kendall Mittleman. Each member was required to complete a minimum of 30 hours of community service and collect the equivalent of $20 in donations, and each had to lead their own project in which the rest of the society participates in. As a group, the EI NHS accomplished many things this year. They assisted the Science Honor Society’s blood drive, created a Safe Halloween event with
the PTA and Key Club, supported the annual food drive, collected pillowcases and created dresses for young girls in Africa, participated in Christmas Magic, supported the high school SADD club’s fashion show, and ran numerous drives of their own ranging from hats and jeans to books and animal shelters. The NHS members also collected 12,200 water bottles and donated the $620 dollars to the Make-AWish Foundation, teamed up with Keep Islip Clean to clean and landscape an area of Islip Terrace, and brought Mr. Hypno to the community for a fun night of hypnosis. “These students worked
tirelessly all year long, serving their community in many different ways,” said adviser Nicole Ingram. “The beauty of our investiture ceremony is that it recognizes the help that our members have had along the way. Each member chooses a mentor who has affected their lives along their journey. They write a letter to their mentor expressing their gratitude and why they were chosen. This is read out loud for the audience to hear, and there are many times when there is not a dry eye left in the house. It is truly a unique and special tradition that I am very proud to facilitate.”

PSEG Employee Helps Beautify ACLD Gardens
The grounds around ACLD’s (Adults & Children with Learning & Developmental Disabilities) Bethpage complex are cleaner, greener and sprouting with new growth since a group of gardening volunteers from PSEG Long Island paid a recent visit. The group of volunteers included Tyler Pearsall of East Islip. “Helping to clean up ACLD was a very rewarding experience,” said Pearsall. “I found it interesting how much joy planting a garden and cleaning up the facility means to all who work and live here.” “For the past three years, volunteers from PSEG Long Island have given their time to beautify the ACLD
campus,” said Robert Ciatto, ACLD chief operating officer. “This year they planted both a sensory garden and vegetable beds, weeded, raked and spread a lot of mulch. ACLD is grateful to PSEG Long Island for their ongoing commitment and passion for ACLD; they have embraced our mission.” PSEG Long Island is committed to giving back to the people and communities it serves by actively supporting hundreds of local charity events each year through the company’s Community Partnership Program. ACLD is one of those organizations. Last year, PSEG Long Island employees logged 26,000 service hours volunteering

Walis Builds Bandsawn Box Islip High School junior and second-year shop student Brian Walis recently wowed his teacher, Jesse Eilbeck, with a special bandsawn project. Walis built a beautiful owl box, using walnut and white pine for the body section. He then reversed the woods
for the belly and face mask sections when cutting them out. Walis used a technique called plug cutting to reproduce the eye sections, working with the exotic hardwoods yellowheart and black ebony. The pull for the belly drawer and the wings were constructed out of
African bloodwood. “Brian has amazing talent,” said Eilbeck. “He gave the owl to his mother, as he told me that it reminded of the works his maternal grandfather was noted for building.”
