likely died of starvation or dehydration, and nobody knows what happened to their mother. They couldn’t leave the puppy behind, so they took her with them. The soldiers named her Harley and cared for the dog, getting her what she needed to thrive and grow. She’s now become an important part of their day, bringing love to their life and making everyone smile. Her presence has made them all feel like they have a little bit of home with them. Now that “AJ”, who’s name cannot be released due to security reasons, will be heading back to the United States, the troop is on board with having Harley go with him. They have reached out to Paws of War to help make it happen. “These soldiers know how dangerous it would be to leave their furry family member there in Syria,” added Misseri. “We will make every effort to bring Harley to America so she can live out her life here. The soldiers believe they saved Harley, but really she may have saved them.”

Syria is not a safe place for the American soldiers who are stationed there, but it’s even more dangerous for a dog. American troops have adopted a stray dog named Harley, raising her to be an important part of their team, and they refuse to leave her behind. Leaving her in Syria would be disastrous, so Paws of War is on a mission to help bring the dog back to the states, where she can live out her days in peace with “AJ.” “When these guys befriend a dog in a war zone it’s often what helps them get through each day,” explains Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War. “They absolutely know they can’t leave Harley behind, so we agreed to work together with them and other contacts we have in that are in a team effort to bring her back to America. But we can’t do it without the help of the public, because we need donations to pull this off.” The troops were out on a mission when they heard a puppy crying. When they investigated, they found six puppies, but only one that was still alive. The others

Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life.

This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events. Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic. Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer: Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are:

career options by salary, understanding money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more. Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit. East Islip’s Resilient Class Of 2020 Celebrates Gains At Commencement Despite losing the end of their senior year to the pandemic, East Islip High School’s Class of 2020 came together to celebrate their resilience at the school’s 93rd commencement ceremony on June 26. Graced by sunny skies, the graduation ceremony was successfully split into five socially distanced sessions at the football stadium, ranging from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Principal Mark Bernard began the speeches by recognizing the difficult circumstances leading up to commencement. “Unexpectedly, we were thrust into a new normal,” he told the assembled seniors. “Your world is changing and you will be faced with many challenges. With those challenges come choices, and sometimes those choices are difficult. My hope is that you will be making choices with compassion and sincerity in the face of adversity. Class of 2020, please keep accept these challenges and always keep your

vision clear, because your future is bright.” The next address came from salutatorian Justine Rizzo, who said, “I am grateful that despite the fact that the world is in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic, we are able to be here together to share this important milestone in our lives. The important thing is that we all made it here as united as one graduating Class of 2020. We are ready to bring our unique talents and EI Pride to the next stop on our journey.” “What I took away from everything that has happened recently, and what I hope you do too, is that despite all that we have lost, we have gained so much more,” valedictorian Caroline Meehan noted in her address. “As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, ‘You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.’ I think that we can all agree that this

What you will remember about today is not the piece of paper, but the relationship you created by giving of yourself to others.” Following the presentation of diplomas, Class President Kayla Cappe gave the farewell address and led her classmates in the turning of the tassels. “Having been a part of this distinguished class for the past 12 years, I know there is no obstacle we cannot overcome,” Cappe told East Islip’s newest alumni. “As we pursue our goals and dreams, using all the talents, skills and knowledge we have acquired throughout these years, I know the world will be a better place.
