Inflation rates are higher now than they have been in decades, and costs are impacting consumers and companies around the United States. Small businesses are struggling to keep pricing down and stay open. Many business owners are grappling with how to deliver customers the best quality products at the lowest price possible. We talked with local company Unified Home Remodeling, on how they are combating inflation to keep prices down during this time. Unified is leveraging its long-standing partnerships with national manufacturers to control costs and reduce unnecessary price hikes for consumers. The company is passing on many exclusive deals and rebates they receive from large quantity purchases to customers to retain some of the most competitive pricing in the market. “For nearly 35 years, Unified has forged relationships with national manufacturers and suppliers to help control costs during some of the most challenging financial times in recent history,” said Steve DiMare, Founder of Unified. “We have increased our internal efficiencies by developing seamless ordering, delivery, and invoicing procedures over the years – and we are proud to put those cost-savings right back into our customers’ pockets.” While Unified is able to do this with their long history and dedicated staff many other companies are not able to do this and are forced to increase their pricing. Some prices for products like windows, doors, siding, roofing, and masonry have increased over 150% since 2020. With price jumps continuing to be given to companies every month, and sometimes every week, only the most dedicated companies will be able to keep costs down for their customers.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that they are hosting the 44th Annual Jones Beach Volleyball Tournament comprised of 6-player coed teams. This event will take place on Saturday, July 16, 2022 and will be held rain or shine. The tournament will begin at 9:00AM on the volleyball courts at Central Mall Field 4 at Jones Beach State Park. The first round of matches will be played as a round robin. All teams are guaranteed to play seven games. The top two teams from each round robin bracket will advance on to the quarterfinals which will decide the two final teams. Cash prizes will be awarded to the 1st and 2nd place teams. www.kinexion.org “Kinexion, (pronounced “connection”), is a brand new management service organization (MSO) on Long Island that oversees seven separate non-profits and provides them with infrastructure that frees them up to focus on what they do best, which is to offer best-in-class services to individuals with disabilities and progress society to a point where it embraces people of all abilities.
One of those non-profits is Independent Group Home (IGHL), which opened its first group home in Mt. Sinai in 1978 to provide a community-based, homelike environment that encouraged personal growth and a genuine sense of belonging to a community for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Since then, IGHL has developed multiple community home opportunities, and a complete services network throughout Suffolk County. IGHL also runs Day Treatment programs, residential homes and communitybased residential homes to allow people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to experience living in a home environment while receiving the specialized care they require. “The goal of IGHL’s residential program is to encourage growth and independence while providing a genuine sense of belonging,” said Stockton, who is also President & CEO of IGHL. “We help each of our residents and program participants be as independent as possible. We teach

This was the fifth year that Islip has bestowed this prestigious honor, which recognizes high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in one or more languages in addition to English. The Seal will be affixed to each student’s diploma and high school transcript. Richard Castronova, Carolyn Do and Angela Padilla Crespo earned the Seal of Biliteracy in Italian, while Sarah Alvarez, Lilian Arriaza Alonzo, Stephanie Castro, Joyce Johnson, Anthony Lopez, Juliana Marconi, Adriana Montecinos, Desiree Pagan, Justin Rhodes and Brianna Zavala earned the Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish. In addition, juniors Daiana Fuentes Velasquez and Juan Pantaleon were recognized as Seal of Biliteracy candidates demonstrating proficiency in Spanish. The ceremony was led by
Seal of Biliteracy advisers Sarah Ito, Karen Maisano and Giuseppa Prainito. Certificates were awarded by Board of Education President Philip Dineen and Superintendent Dr. Dennis O’Hara, who praised the students as role models for the entire district. “Our students have completed rigorous work requirements in English and a world language,” World Language and ENL Coordinator Rabia Hirji said. “They have also successfully presented culminating projects in Spanish or Italian, demonstrating proficiency. The Seal of Biliteracy acknowledges their hard work and determination to learn another language and become bilingual and biliterate is today’s global society. What our students have earned today is not only an award, but to truly communicate and connect with other people who speak the same language. Learning a new language immerses you into a new way of life, new culture and new human connection. Today, some of our students will share with you what being biliterate
means to them and the value it represents in their education and future. All of the students’ culminating projects represented a combination of heritage, culture and language of that particular society. I had the privilege to see some of the presentations and witnessed the hard work, effort and courage our students showed during the presentations to the Biliteracy Committee.”

Great River Boy Scout Earns His Eagle Scout Badge, Making Him A Third Generation Eagle Scout In The Family Maxwell Curtin Lessing, Great River, New York, successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on January 12, 2022, officially making him the 102nd Eagle Scout in the history of Troop 205 of Great River, East Islip, and Islip Terrace, NY. Maxwell’s Eagle Court of Honor was held on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at The Mansion at Timber Point, 398 Great River Rd, Great River, NY 11739. Maxwell Lessing is a third generation Eagle Scout, following in the Scouting footprints of his Grandfather and Distinguished Eagle Scout Gerald Curtin, Great River, NY, as well as Maxwell’s Uncle, Tim Curtin, Great River, NY – where he is Troop 205 Eagle Scout #6 – earning his Eagle Badge in 1999. Maxwell is a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “Road to Eagle,” Maxwell has served Troop 205 as a Patrol Leader, Troop Scribe, and Troop Guide – where he assists his younger Scouts in
their Rank Advancements. Maxwell has had many unique Scouting experiences and has a total of 34 camping nights with the Troop. Some of his favorite camping experiences include last summer’s Baiting Hollow Scout Camp for a week, 2019 Summer Camper at Camp Wakpominee at Ft. Ann, NY, and the Montauk Troop Fishing Trips. He also plans to attend the 2023 National Boy Scout Jamboree at the Bechtel Summit in West Virginia and has future aspirations of being on the crews at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, NM, and Florida Sea Base in the Florida Keys. To become an Eagle Scout, a Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 13 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community. Maxwell currently has earned a total of 31 Merit Badges. The Service Project that Maxwell
developed, planned, and implemented with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends, and family members was planning, developing, and construction of Adirondack Chairs, tables, and a trellis for his Church – St. Mary’s R.C. Church, East Islip, NY. Maxwell has also earned the following awards and achievement in Scouts: Webelos Arrow of Light, Firem’n Chit, Tot’in Chit, and Cyber Chip and has been elected by his fellow Scouts to be a member of the Order of the Arrow – Scouting’s honorary camping society, where he is currently a Brotherhood Member of the Order of the Arrow. He has also earned the National Outdoor Award for Camping and the COVID-19 Community Response Award from the Suffolk County Council. Maxwell recently said this about his Scouting career: “Now that I am so close to accomplishing my goals of reaching Eagle Scout, I realize how much the journey to get here has taught me. I’ve learned how to pitch a tent, tie knots, and deal with hard situations.
Even though these are all important things, my Scouting experience has taught me much more important values. In this journey, I have learned the building blocks for my future.” Maxwell went on to say, “Overall in my life, I have one main goal which is to help others and make an impact on the world. I want to make a positive change in the world that will help many people throughout the world. While I realize that my goals may change as I get older, I do hope that I will accomplish everything I set out to do in life. Scouting has prepared me to do this.” Maxwell is currently in the 8th Grade at St. Mary School, East Islip, New York, where he was recently named a Class Valedictorian and is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and a member of the St. Mary School Student Council. He has earned the St. Mary School Perfect Attendance Award since the 5th Grade and the St. Mary Writing Award in 2021. He is a member of the St. Mary Cross Country Team,
where he placed eighth individually at the CMSA Championship and the team placed first, overall. Maxwell is also a St. Mary Flag Hoister, where he raises and lowers the flag daily. He was also on the St. Mary School Bowling and St. Mary Soccer Teams, and currently on the St. Mary Performing Arts Club. Maxwell has also earned the NYSSMA Outstanding Performance Award on Piano in 2021. Maxwell has been a member of the East Islip Soccer Club, the Long Island Fun Runners, the Eastern Athletic Club Junior Tennis Program, the Southward Ho Country Club Swim Team, and the World Gym Tennis Program. Performing service projects is common for Maxwell, where he has logged in 46.8 hours of community service hours through the Troop, not including his own Eagle Service Project. This includes volunteering for the East Islip Soccer Club “Just for Kicks Program,” serving as an Altar Server at the Church of St. Mary, East Islip, NY, and a volunteer
for the road cleanup and planting projects through the Great River Community Association, Great River, NY, and a member of the Church of St. Mary Youth Group. Maxwell is the son of Gerilyn and Peter Lessing and Brother to Prescott Lessing, Great River, NY. The Lessing Family have been an active Scouting Family in Troop 205, as his Mother Gerilyn serves on the Troop Committee, Father Peter, an Assistant scoutmaster and Head Chef of Troop 205, and Brother Prescott, a new Scout in Troop 205 this Spring, after being a Webelos Scout in Cub Scout Pack 205.

Each year the Historical Society of Islip Hamlet seeks to honor one graduating Islip senior who shares their interest in Islip’s rich and diverse local history. The 2022 History Research Essay Scholarship was presented to Jordyn Zurbaran for her paper on the history of Islip Airport, the first municipal airport on Long Island. Jordyn’s research traced the history of the airport

Thankful To Start A New Chapter Proudly wearing red robes and caps, East Islip High School’s Class of 2022 excitedly marched on to Sal Ciampi Field at Boomer Esiason Stadium for the school’s 95th commencement ceremony on June 23. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Meagan Diaz, Kamilah Pasha and Gianna Viviano, Aiden Gomez sang “The StarSpangled Banner” and the vocal quartet of Michaela Fitzsimmons, Isabelle Irizarry-McAdam, Jake Kilrain and Daniel Locke delivered a beautiful rendition of the school’s alma mater, while the school’s American Sign Language class offered interpreted versions. Principal Mark Bernard presented 50-year diplomas to members of East Islip’s Class of 1972 in attendance. In his address, Bernard noted that he had shared an exceptional bond with these students, having spent all three years with them as principal of East Islip Middle School before moving to the high school with them for the last four years. “As you leave East Islip High School, accept
this challenge: Be the difference in someone’s life,” he told the seniors. “End the isolation that we have all felt. Reach out and reconnect, and never hide your EI Pride.” “Thank you for allowing me to make all these memories and meet all these people,” salutatorian Miranda Stockton said of East Islip itself. “I will carry everything I learned over the years with me for the rest of my life. This is only the beginning, and I wish everyone luck in their new chapter in life.” Valedictorian Chiara Mosca spoke on perfectionism and goals. “Yes, it’s important to try your absolute best and work your hardest, but living in a goal-based mindset of hollow ultimatums will always leave you feeling unsatisfied, unfulfilled and unhappy,” she said. “Instead of telling yourself you’ll be happy when a specific goal is achieved, it is much more valuable to focus your energy and dedication on your core principles. Your goals will follow.” After the top 25 seniors of the class were recognized, Superintendent John Dolan addressed the Class
of 2022. “It is an honor and personal privilege to have served as your superintendent since you were in the fifth grade,” Dolan told them. “Watching you grow from girls and boys to the accomplished men and women you are today, has been one of the greatest gifts of my professional career. You are a class of strength, character, resilience, perseverance, optimism and a strong work ethic, all encased in such beautiful smiles.” Board of Education President Christopher Zachry reminded the graduates to “slow it down, enjoy the moment and be thankful for the gift of the day. To the Class of 2022, no matter where you go or where life takes you, East Islip will always be your home.” Following a farewell from Class of 2022 CoPresidents Emily Blair and Nicole Rosenberg, tassels were turned, caps flung into the sky, and the newest graduates of East Islip walked out to join their happy families and explore the futures.
