Every person needs to take one day away. A day in which one consciously separates the past from the future. Jobs, family, employers and friends can exist one day without any one of us, and if our egos permit us to confess, they could exist eternally in our absence. Each person deserves a day away in which no problems are confronted, no solutions searched for. Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us. ~ Maya Angelou I have always been a fan of the above quote, feeling its sentiment to be one we would all do better to embrace from time to time. One day. How difficult can it be to truly remove oneself from our surroundings and instead become immersed in the peace and tranquility of utter respite for one continuous 24-hour period? Turns out, much more so than anticipated.

I have never been one to take vacation days too liberally, so when I decided to make it my mission to piece together a five-day “weekend” leading up to the 4th of July, it was with a feeling of entering unchartered territory. How to fill these five days from morning ’til night, to schedule hour after hour of fun. Schedule fun, you say? Perhaps that was where I went wrong. It’s funny, I generally fluctuate between moving manically from one task to another, barely coming up for air, to spending an entire day doing what can only be adequately described as vegetating. There is rarely an in-between mode. Given five days to play with, I spent the better part of two going full speed ahead, and the others, well - recovering from said adventures. Come time to return to work, and I was just about ready for another minibreak.

I often look at others’ vacation photos and admire how they seem to never come up for air, to always be fitting in one more cultural outing, a dinner with friends, a tourism stop in some city or another. Relaxation? That’s a foreign word for another day; certainly no time for that during the course of limited “free” time we each hold onto like a precious commodity. Irony noted, of course. Try it yourself. Take one day, and attempt to leave it open, free of any scheduled tasks but the ones you choose to engage in on a whim. Remove yourself completely - no phone, no e-mail, no contact. Start with an hour. See how it feels. Build from there. Who knows, you might just reach the end of the day feeling completely refreshed and reinvigorated. Or bored out of your mind. No harm in finding out either way.

The first floor of The Hall of Fishes, the Vanderbilt’s marine museum, has reopened following the Marine Collections Conservation Project. The second floor remains closed temporarily while the nearly 1,500 wet specimens, recently conserved, are organized and returned to their exhibition cases. Supported by a $135,000 grant from The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, the conservation project began in the summer of 2015. Work included conserving five taxidermied flamingos and a group of drymounted fish specimens, the repair of three shore bird dioramas and restoration of the diorama background paintings, and the creation of a new undersea painting for a large-scale exhibition case. “We’re indeed fortunate to have some of the finest restoration experts from

Marine Museum Reopens

Connecting Grads Islip High School’s most recent graduates had a chance to connect with their roots on June 19th, participating in the third annual visit to Wing Elementary School for a walk through the halls in their caps and gowns. Led by the Buccaneers mascot, the seniors paraded out to the playground, where

they greeted the Wing kindergartners and firstgraders. “This was our biggest turnout yet,” said Islip High School Principal Michael Mosca, who developed the walk with Wing Principal Christopher Smalley. “The seniors were thrilled to have the opportunity to visit their former teachers

and give out high-fives to the younger students. This has become a wonderful tradition that benefits both Wing and high school students. It allows our seniors to reflect on their entire educational journey and it gives our Wing students a glimpse into their future as Islip students.”

Celebrating 50 Years East Islip’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School marked its 50th anniversary this year, leading up to a special celebration on June 7th. The school opened in September 1967, named in honor of pioneering East Islip educator Ruth C. Kinney, who served the district as a teacher and principal from 1929 to 1966. At the event, current Principal Hillary

Bromberg was joined by former principals Danielle Naccarato (2004-2015), Alise-Becker Santa (20012004) and Christian Lavoie (1985-1997), and visiting families and alumni enjoyed a gallery walk through the decades, displayed on the firstfloor walls. Professional musician and 2004 RCK graduate Victoria Bouton, the author of the school song, “Learning Is the Way

at RCK,” traveled from her current home in Texas to perform her composition “Intergalactic Jellyfish.” “Over the past three years, I have experienced the amazing place that is RCK,” said Bromberg. “It is filled with special students and staff and visited by a special school community. RCK has an amazing family feel and has become a second home to many.”

With coastal breezes, tons of sunshine and world-class beaches, Long Island is a wonderful place for beach-lovers to reside. However, we must remember to take care of our shoreline and preserve the natural beauty that surrounds us. Throughout the month, I will present various ways that you can help those at Coastal Steward Long Island to preserve, educate and take action! Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards. CSLI has led beach cleanups in their local communities for over a decade, which has helped prevent the contamination of our beaches. Thanks to their volunteers and sponsors, they have removed over 200 tons of trash from the shores of Long Island! They have also been restoring shellfish since 2000. More than 500,000 adult shellfish have been released into Port

Jefferson and Mt. Sinai Harbors to date. They wish to establish a self-sustaining population of oysters in our harbors. As a non-profit that operates 100% by volunteers, Coastal Steward Long Island is always taking volunteers. If you would like to help keep our island home to some of the most beautiful and top-rated beaches in America, then consider volunteering with CSLI! They are looking for volunteers to help with beach cleanups, to plant oysters, to collect relevant data, to maintain tanks, to release into the harbor and to perform office work. On Saturday, July 14th, CSLI will be having a Shellfish Restoration Project at Cedar Beach in Mt. Symposium Set Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced a symposium for creating placemaking, Creating: The Downtown Experience, will be held on July 12th at 8 a.m. at the Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington. County Executive Bellone, in conjunction with the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning’s Office of Cultural Affairs, has gathered an accomplished panel of experts from the fields of commercial revitalization, the cultural industry and municipalities to share, educate and collaborate on the subject of creative placemaking. “Our downtowns are essential to keeping our region competitive and

bringing the high skill, high knowledge workers we need to grow our local economy,” said County Executive Bellone. “This symposium will open up a dialogue and provide communities across the county with tools needed to create their own unique downtown experience.” Creating: The Downtown Experience will present how communities create a vibrant destination for visitors and tourists to dine and shop in a culture-infused downtown. The formula includes a combination of community engagement, local government and business support and participation, and transit connections combined with elements that draw

visitors and tourists. The symposium will discuss best practices, examples of successful projects and economic advantages. Attendees will leave with action-oriented steps for their own communities. The goal of the event is to provide attendees with the insight and tools necessary to assist communities county-wide in building downtown experiences that stimulate the economy, drive innovation, welcome cultural diversity and foster civic engagement. fins and feathers, and returned them to the Vanderbilt. Sean Murtha, an artist who specializes in fineart background paintings for museum dioramas, recreated an eight-byten foot painting of the ocean floor to replace the faded original created in

1924. Thomas Doncourt, a foreground artist, restored the habitat in the Caribbean shore bird dioramas, which included recreating a crumbled section of beach in one diorama. Murtha also restored sections of the paintings in those dioramas.

Murtha and Doncourt are both former staff members of the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) and Dante is a top AMNH taxidermy consultant. The three are part of the continuous, centurylong Vanderbilt-AMNH collaboration that began

when William Vanderbilt (1878-1944) hired artisans and scientists from the museum to design the Habitat dioramas in his own new museum in the 1920s. Vanderbilt also hired artist William Belanske, who accompanied him on his world voyages and became

his resident artist and curator. Over the past several years, the three artists also completed extensive work on the wild-animal dioramas in the museum’s Stoll Wing, funded by two $100,000 grants from the Roy M. Speer Foundation.
