The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. After featuring a powerful testimonial last week, I’d like to feature another testimonial this week to show just how much of an impact the work of this organization has on the Long Island community. One thankful Long Island resident that has received help from RTLI said, “Your organization is truly a blessing to people like me who have no one and no finances at all to ever cover all the fixings. You’ve made it possible for me to have some peace of mind so I can still be able to stay in my home, the only “roots” I know.”
1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! Coach Leggio spent 21 seasons as the East Islip High School wrestling coach, propelling the program into a success story, and compiling a 270-115-5 record. Leggio was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2014. Leggio joined his father, Jumper Leggio, a legend in the world of youth wrestling, in the Hall of Fame.

For the fourth consecutive year, Islip High School hosted a special reception on June 25 for the valedictorian and salutatorian, providing a chance for both students – Class of 2019 valedictorian Victoria Arthus and salutatorian Matthew Southard – to reconnect with all of their former high school, middle school and elementary school teachers. “We are here to congratulate these seniors, our valedictorian
and salutatorian,” said Superintendent Ellen Semel to the assembled educators. “But so many of you have had a hand in helping shape their lives, and I want to thank you all for this. We so seldom realize the power we have as educators, and this is one of those times you get to see it in living color.” Turning to the two seniors, Semel told them, “I congratulate you for your leadership, your perseverance, your
excellence in academia. You’ve been an inspiration not just to the other students, but to all of us here for what you’ve accomplished. I know that you’re going to be doing wonderful and great things. Please remember where you come from. Please visit and share what you’ve learned with all of us. We do want to follow your careers as you move forward and have the pleasure of knowing that we had a hand in that.”

East Islip High School theater students garnered a record 16 nominations in multiple categories for this year’s productions of “Lend Me a Tenor” and “Miss Saigon” – and swept every single category in the drama/comedy division – at the Islip Arts Council’s annual Teeny Awards ceremony, held on June 2 at Bay Shore High School. The event marked the 11th year of the Teeny Awards, a theater recognition program for high school students modeled after Broadway’s famous Tony Awards. Karina Gallagher won Best Actress, Andrew Timmins won Best Actor, Alex Bertolini won Best Supporting Actress, Luke Ferrari won Best

The pit orchestra of “Miss Saigon” earned a Teeny Award for their high-caliber playing, Emily DaSilva and Tori Tiernan were selected for Director’s Choice awards, and Tori Tiernan earned an Islip Arts Council scholarship. “It was an incredible honor for East Islip to receive so many nominations and awards, and we are so proud of all of our talented theater students,” said Bethany Affelt, the high school’s choral and theater director.

Celebrating Accomplishments Fifth graders at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools took the next step in their educational careers in preparing for middle school, celebrating at two memorable moving up ceremonies, held at the high school’s auditorium on June 19 for RCK and June 20 for JFK. Hundreds of parents and family members were on hand to cheer as the students received congratulations as well as numerous academic and other awards. “The moving up event represents the end of the children’s elementary education and the beginning of their secondary education,” said JFK Principal Deborah Smith. “It was a joyous day of celebration and accomplishment of the final
year at JFK. We wish the children a fabulous summer and best of luck in East Islip Middle School, where we know they will continue to shine.” “Over the past year here at RCK, I had the privilege of getting to know these fine young boys and girls,” said Principal Janet Jones. “They are an enthusiastic and inquisitive group of young minds, who I am sure will thrive in the middle school. Walking Food Tour An excited group of Islip middle schoolers – sixth graders from the EXCEL program and seventh graders from family and consumer science classes – embarked on the second annual walking food tour of Islip’s Main Street on May 31, accompanied by EXCEL coordinator Julia Johnson and FACS teacher
Naomi Sauer. After exploring Tellers steakhouse, the students moved on to Verace next door, where Executive Chef Dylan Hoyt and Sous Chef Corey Caulfield taught them how to make meatballs and penne vodka, which they enjoyed for lunch. The tour continued with visits to Pizza Parm
and Coyle’s Ice Cream. “I think this is really awesome experience for the students,” said Hoyt. “It shows them how much work goes into just one plate of food that is prepared for them. And it’s enjoyable for us, too. We like to teach these kids.”

National Honor Society East Islip High School’s National Honor Society invested 55 members in a June 11 ceremony held in the middle school auditorium. Speakers included CoPresidents Jolie Lenox and Kendall Mittleman. Each member was required to complete a minimum of 30 hours of community service and collect the equivalent of $20 in donations, and each had to lead their own project in which the rest of the society participates in. As a group, the EI NHS accomplished many things this year. They assisted the Science Honor Society’s blood drive, created a Safe Halloween event with the PTA and Key Club, supported the annual food drive, collected pillowcases and created dresses for young girls in Africa, participated in Christmas Magic, supported the high school SADD club’s fashion show, and ran numerous drives of their own ranging from hats and
