Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life.

This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events. Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic. In March of 2020, when the pandemic really started to hit hard, Rhonda, along with the assistance of her board members, united to find solutions for the community despite what was going on. Rhonda believed that even though EFF programs may be on hold, that did not mean the people of the community did not still need answers and help. She has worked endless hours for the sake of the families that need assistance and need a voice. Since the pandemic Rhonda has either spearheaded or collaborated in many projects to help our community out. Here is an example of just a few: The Grab & Go 3,000 Event in Patchogue: Rhonda collaborated with business owner of local restaurant to provide over 3,000 hot meals to families in need. Grab & Go Breakfast in Rocky Point: EFF collaborated with local bagel store owner, Edward Henry of Strathmore bagels and a few

sponsors, to give-away over 300 breakfasts to families in need. 6 Week Marathon: March 29th was the beginning of a 6 week marathon of assisting front line workers with food. EFF and Rhonda did a Go Fund Me with local bagel store owner, Edward Henry to supply St. Charles, Mather and Stony Brook Hospital food every night.

PPE Equipment Fundraiser: EFF collaborated with several Allstate Insurance offices to raise funds for PPE equipment. Over 2,000 masks were delivered to various hospitals, senior centers, nursing homes and fire districts. Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. Miriam H. says, “Rhonda is a true professional that looks out for the best interest of her clients. She works hard at finding the best solutions and making her clients shine. Did You Know? Adolescence can be a trying time for teenagers and their parents. According to the American Psychological Association, parents and caregivers face an entirely new set of tasks to deal with the changing needs of children as they reach adolescence. The changes that accompany adolescence include physical, cognitive and social changes, and parents may need to adopt an entirely new approach to parenting as they deal with the changing needs of their children during their
period in their lives. The APA notes that adolescents often crave greater independence and autonomy, and this desire is a natural part of their development process. It’s important that parents of adolescents find a way to maintain the familial bonds they and their children have developed up to this point, while also allowing increasingly mature teens a level of autonomy that can benefit them throughout their lives. According to clinical psychologist
William Stixrud, Ph.D., decades of psychological research has shown that a lack of perceived control leads people to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, and resigned. So adolescents who feel that they have control over the direction of their lives, feelings which can be strengthened when they are given some level of autonomy as teenagers, are less likely to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, or resigned as adults.

Islip’s Spectacular Senior Send-Off Islip High School honored its Class of 2020 with a spectacular Senior Send-Off on June 10, as students and their families drove through balloon arches in the high school and middle school parking lots while being cheered on by staff spectators as well as the Islip Fire Department and Exchange Ambulance of the Islips. Pop-up tents and tables were set up to distribute yearbook, caps and gowns, and gift
baskets, and individual graduate signs were posted on the on grass. A DJ and live drummer added to the celebratory mood. “The Senior Send-Off was truly a remarkable day, not only for the wonderful students of the Class of 2020, but for the Islip school community as a whole,” said Principal Jon LaRochester. “It is so important to be able to pull all the positives out of the very difficult situation we
all faced this past spring, and what was displayed at the parade was simply the very best of Islip. Help This U.S. Soldier Overseas Bring His Two Previously Mistreated Dogs Back to the US There are parts of the world that sadly aren’t a safe place for dogs. So when American soldiers see some that have been abandoned or abused, they can’t help but to want to get involved. When they do, they form a bond with the dog, and can’t bear the thought of leaving them behind when it’s time to head back home. A soldier has reached out to Guardians of Rescue, asking for help to get his two dogs back to the U.S. from overseas, so they can live out their life with him in peace. “We understand how important it is that they are able to rescue these dogs for good and make them a permanent part of their family,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We absolutely want to help them, and know how to make it happen, but we have to have the financial backing of the public to pull it off.” Chief Warrant Officer Anderson has been on a mission, serving overseas for his country. Now, his country is being asked to help him with his mission of bringing his two beloved dogs home with him. As he is scheduled to head back to America, the idea of leaving the dogs behind in a foreign country is weighing heavy on his heart. He swore to both dogs that they would never be abandoned and mistreated gain, and he’s
counting on Guardians of Rescue to help ensure it. The two dogs, Moose and Sergeant Mimi Morale, were found by Anderson. They were strays that were starving and had been mistreated. He rescued them, gave them the treatment they needed to nurse them back to health, named them, and then fell in love. Sergeant Mimi Morale got her name, because she has a special way of boosting the morale of everyone around, and putting a smile on everyone’s face. The two canine companions have been living in his tent and have become family. “There’s nothing like the bond you can have with a dog, or with dogs in this case,” explained Chief Warrant Officer Anderson. “I love these dogs like family, and I can’t walk away and leave family behind over here. I will forever be grateful to be able to take them back to the U.S. so they can continue being a part of my family.” While Guardians of Rescue has helped numerous soldiers be able to bring their adopted dogs back to the US from overseas, it’s a costly process. This July 4th, as we celebrate the nation’s independence, it would be extra special to honor those members who are on the front line securing it. Helping to bring back this soldiers dogs would be the ultimate reward, honoring why they serve in the military, which is
to protect life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It’s estimated that to bring both dogs back will cost around $9,000. The only way they can ensure that the soldier’s dogs can be brought back is by raising the funds that it will take to do so. (EOC of Suffolk) has received $1.7 million in federal funds to provide financial assistance to individuals and families facing economic hardships arising from COVID-19related disruptions. The funds are being made available to eligible Suffolk County residents
who have either lost their jobs, became temporarily unemployed, or faced financial difficulties because of the pandemic. The funds originate from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act – commonly known as the CARES Act – which is providing $41 billion in funding to supplement the nationwide

Why Do Grads Don Caps And Gowns? Graduation ceremonies are steeped in tradition, the most noticeable of which may be the caps and gowns worn by students on hand to receive their degrees. This attire likely dates back to 12th century Europe, when students would wear hoods and gowns that resembled those worn by their teachers, who were members of the clergy.
According to Colorado State University, in 1321 a statute of the University of Coimbra in Portugal declared that all “Doctors, Licentiates, and Bachelors” wear gowns. That means that the mandatory graduation gown is on the cusp of celebrating its 700th anniversary. Hoods, caps and gowns not only signified a certain status
of the students wearing them, but they also served a more practical purpose, helping to keep students warm in the unheated buildings where they were being taught. Ironically, many modern graduates, particularly those whose graduation ceremonies are held outdoors, may lament that their caps and gowns make them feel hot.
