Gabriel Phillippe was a kind and sensitive 16-yearold who was struggling with addiction and lost his battle on April 22, 2010, ironically the same day The Suffolk County Environmental Center, a public nature center located on the Scully Estate in Islip, took possession of the 70-acre facility through a long-term custodial agreement with the Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation. The family took this as a sign that their memorial should be located here as a quiet meditation, reﬂection and remembrance for those lost to addiction and the families left behind. In addition to

Blue Umbrella Experience (BUE) is a local nonproﬁt organization that offers a variety of interactive and engaging community classes for youth, young adults and individuals through their Above and Beyond Community Class initiative. Their goal is that students will enjoy learning while also connecting with others. The importance of community should never be overlooked, and Blue Umbrella Experience deﬁnitely understands that!

“We know we are our best selves when we have that safe space to feel accepted in, to help give us courage to try new things and practice using our voices to comfortably advocate for ourselves. We started our nonproﬁt Blue Umbrella Experience, Inc last June with the hope of thoughtfully and skillfully helping youth, young adults and individuals of all abilities to grow by learning, connecting and belonging during the pandemic and beyond,” says Executive Director Christine Hawkins. “We honestly could not bear the thought that individuals might otherwise face even more isolation, adversity and less options. We have been blessed with a team of instructors that have professional teaching experience in a Comprehensive

Since September, this nonprofit has had 100% retention and everyday their BUE community continues to expand, while keeping their interactive classes small and personalized for optimum learning. To nurture the incredibly important sense of belonging, they also make sure they incorporate free lunch meetings, a weekly wrap up community meeting, as well as social events to integrate learning and help students nurture their bonds with each other. Students and professionals are always welcome to visit their new location to see what its all about! Additionally, if you are looking to get involved with BUE, they welcome professionals that have teaching experience and a lot of heart to reach out and propose classes that they can run that will support skillbuilding and increase quality of life for others. RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY - On June 23, 2021, the Adventureland family celebrated the Grand Reopening of Adventureland with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Adventureland opened in 1962 and has been serving Long Island for over 59 years. The park offers both season and day passes that can be purchased online or at the park. the meditation garden, five Pine Trees were planted and dedicated to a different aspect of how people battle the addiction crisis. Gabriel’s Giving Tree was formed by these survivors and their mission is to provide financial and emotional support to families who have lost a loved one to addiction.

Jesus said ‘Feed the Hungry’

Before his untimely death in 1981, singer-songwriter and philanthropist Harry Chapin established Long Island Cares, a food bank dedicated to serving Long Island’s hungry population. That said, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 754 Montauk Highway, Islip, New York, will hold a driveby food drop on Saturday, July 24 from 9 AM to 1PM. The food drop, which will be held on the sidewalk in front of the church doors, will send all donations to God’s Provisions, a Long Island Cares affiliate. Volunteers will be available to take donations, should anyone wish not to get out of his/her car. There will even be a special musician presentation by the Cursillo players. God’s Provisions supports 25 locations by distributing pre-boxed meals and bags of groceries to church pantries, shelters and senior communities. Director Dana Jahn said Long Island Cares provides 60% of the shelf stable resources to God’s Provisions, adding that “They also obtained a grant for us to do direct food purchase.” God’s Provisions gets additional support from

churches, local stores and community sources. “This support helped pull us through the early months of Covid when the food banks were scrambling for resources,” Jahn said. “Every time I think we’re getting low, someone hands me a check. One day the shortfall was so great I was afraid we wouldn’t be able to support all of our locations, but days before St. Mark’s had a food drop which brought in 24,000 donations and enabled us to continue.” Food insecurity is a serious matter, said one organizer, and we also try to keep the food drops light enough to draw people in, adding that last December even Santa showed up to help sort. “The ultimate goal, after all, is to feed the hungry, so you want people to come,” she said. The food drives are nonsectarian; you do not need to be a parishioner or an Episcopalian to donate. In fact, many conduct little food drives by approaching neighbors, friends and family--then bring it all to us on the day of the food drive. We, in turn, send it to God’s Provisions. Some suggested items include: pasta, rice, beans, peanut butter, jelly,

cereal, mac and cheese, juice boxes, crackers, cookies, salt, pepper, cake/brownie mixes, canned tuna and chicken, stuffing mix, soup, canned gravy, tomato sauce, condensed milk, pudding (boxed, not prepared) jello, apple sauce, canned vegetables and fruit, kidfriendly treats, cleaning supplies, laundry supplies, toiletries, pet food, baby products, etc. Please don’t donate anything that can spoil--even chocolate can be iffy because if it’s hot, it can melt.
