The East Islip High School’s National Honor Society recently completed another Pulsera Project initiative, raising money for several struggling artists with more success than ever before. The Pulsera Project is a nonprofit organization that educates, empowers and connects Central American artists with students in more than 3,000 U.S. schools via the sales of colorful handwoven bracelets, known as “pulseras” in Spanish. It provides students with a unique cultural education experience, allowing them to bring the beauty of Latin

American culture to life in their own classrooms and hallways. With the help of leaders Samantha Panzella, Miranda Stockton and Samantha Tucci, the National Honor Society successfully sold 382 pulseras during the high school’s Foreign Language Week, raising $1,410 dollars to donate to the Pulsera Project. Students from every grade were eager to buy bracelets and proudly show them off. Each individual bracelet came with a tag showing a picture of the artist, their name and where they are from.

“Just by walking down the hallway, you can see numerous people wearing their pulseras,” said National Honor Society adviser Nicole Ingram. “What a great way to add some color to our school. Many students and teachers took interest in the bracelets and wanted to know more about where they came from. The Pulsera Project was so successful that East Islip will gladly participate next year with hopes to sell even more pulseras. Thank you to everyone who took part in the making, buying, and selling of the pulseras.”

Islip Arts Takes Home 2022 Video Arts Awards From Press Club Of Long Island

The Press Club of Long Island held its 2022 Media Awards event on June 2nd at the Melville Marriott Long Island. The Islip Arts Council won two awards in the Arts category for: • Islip Arts Council Gives Brentwood Theatre Students A Special Moment in the Spotlight • The Best of The Islip Art Museum’s 2-TOGETHER ART EXHIBITION 2021. The first winning story was part of the 2021 TEENYS virtual celebration of the performing arts by high

school theater students in the Town of Islip. Due to COVID limitations, Brentwood High School students did not put on any shows. In order to give seniors one moment in the spotlight, the Islip Arts Council arranged for the students to perform one number just for our cameras. The Performance of a number from ONCE UPON THIS ISLAND was brief but its emotional impact on the cast and faculty will last forever. The second story 2-TOGETHER, a virtual art exhibition for the Islip

Art Museum in partnership with AARP New York which was co-curated by Holly Gordon and Waldo Cabrera. Established artists were asked to partner with young artists and create a work of art. Twenty two couples were interviewed on video about their creative journey. The video that was submitted featured the best interviews of that collection. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

Drew Walendowski of East Islip High School And Matthew Triolo Of John Glenn High School In Huntington Win Lacrosse Showcase Award Goalie Drew Walendowski of East Islip High School and attackman Matthew Triolo of John Glenn High School in Huntington were named co-winners of the James C. Metzger Most Valuable Player Award in Suffolk County's 9-7 win over Nassau County in the Long Island Lacrosse Showcase Top 25 Game of Rising Sophomores at Hofstra University on June 23. Walendowski was credited with more than

eight saves on quality scoring chances and Triolo scored four goals. The winning Suffolk team, coached by Brett Jeffares of Connetquot High School and Tom Corcoran of West Islip High School, received the Metzger Cup. The cup is awarded to the winning teams at each of the four games of Rising Freshmen, Rising Sophomores, Rising Juniors and Rising Seniors at the Lacrosse Showcase,

the premier event that allows players to display their talent for college coaches. Suffolk won three of the four games. The awards were presented by 1970s high school and college lacrosse stars James C. Metzger and Vincent J. Sombrotto of Whitmore—The Agency, one of the largest independent insurance and financial firms in the New York metropolitan area with offices in Garden City.
