FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills and gas grills were involved in an average of 8,900 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below. Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors. The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from

Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it. As New Yorkers are beginning to emerge from “New York on Pause,” and looking towards nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their grills for the first time in months. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules and tips to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for some outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “We want all residents to stay safe as we emerge from quarantine and heed some basic safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow social distancing rules to keep their families and other families safe for the coming months.”

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is wellrounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Unlike your average hair salon, Scanlon’s uses fresh new sanitized tools and capes on all her clients. She now also offers one on one personal service with gloves and masks, and will wash and sanitize any area which was touched during the visit. Additionally, if you would like to have your hair service done outside, Scanlon’s will gladly honor that request. “Everyone’s safety and comfort is our primary concern”, says owner Eileen Scanlon. Scanlon’s business model was always unique and special, however with everyone adjusting to the new normal, her services are becoming more and more desired. A young woman who loves Eileens services mentioned, “Being able to call up an experienced local and friendly hair

dresser during times like these where I am not comfortable going to a salon is so comforting. She will come to my house and give me a hair cut outside if I want. It doesn’t get much more refreshing than that.” Mary D. from Massapequa, a long-time client of Eileens also has only good things to share; “I live with a crippling disability and getting out is a challenge for me, especially in inclement weather. I’ve been using Eileen’s service for about 7 years now and I would not go back to a salon anytime soon. If I ever need anything from the store before she arrives I simply call her and she will pick it up for me. I live alone and if a light bulb goes out or I need to reach something in a closet that requires my mini ladder I feel comfortable asking Eileen to reach it for me. Scanlon’s vehicles are all easily identified because they are decorated with salon decals and sponsorship information from local businesses. Due to the coronavirus, all nonessential businesses have been forced to shut down or find other ways to stay open while maintaining social distancing guidelines. Musical activities such as music lessons are just one of the things that were subject to finding other means of operating. Some places that provide music lessons have moved to an online format during these times; however, some students and teachers find the shift to be more challenging than if they were in person. “It’s a little more challenging than if I was to have in-person lessons,” said Conner Plompen, an 18-year-old piano student who lives in Sayville. “If I make a mistake, my teacher can’t really show me on the sheet paper what I did wrong; instead, she has to try and explain it.” “There have definitely been some challenges.
There are latency issues, it is hard for a teacher to position a piano student’s hands or help a vocalist correctly,” said Rebecca Cypher, owner of Musical Journeys Music Lessons.
Some students said that having music lessons and practicing during this time has provided a healthy outlet to release all of the stress that the pandemic might have caused them.
“I feel like people had to relearn the art of making music together through Zoom,” said Eve Troiano, a department chair and orchestra director at Smithtown Christian School. “Music and playing an instrument are such a physical activity that you lose a connection when you have lessons through the internet.”
“If I am playing a song, it calms me down,” said Plompen. “I feel it when I play the whole song through, even if I make a few mistakes, it brings my mood to a calmer level. With everything that is going on right now, I need something to help me escape, and music helps me with that.”
Some students said the shift was hard for them because of their close friendships with their music teachers. “It’s hard because I have a really good relationship with my teacher. She is a really important person to me, and it’s tough not to see her in person,” said Plompen.
The shift to having music lessons online offers challenges, however, it is better than for these music studios to close up shop entirely or for students to stop music lessons altogether. “It’s been a challenge, but it is better than not having lessons and it is worth the extra work,” said Cypher. “It is absolutely harder to teach over Zoom and different platforms. It is a challenge, a lot of the time there is a lag in the Zoom meetings, however, we find ways to make it work,” said Troiano.
Even amid the challenges, some students have experienced more opportunities due to platforms such as Zoom, FaceTime and Skype. “One of the most exciting opportunities I got to experience during the pandemic is that one of my elementary students got to meet one of their favorite composers,” said Troiano. “What was super unique about that is that this composer lives in London and my student got a real FaceTime experience with the composer, which wouldn’t usually have happened.”
“I feel more inclined to practice because it helps me calm down and be happy,” said Tristian Prin, a 12-year-old piano student who lives in Holtsville. “Music has always been a big part of my life, so now having more time to do, it’s defiantly something that makes me feel good and helps with the stress,” Sophia Licata, a 15-yearold voice student who

Farmingville.
“Anytime I’m bored or really thinking about the pandemic, I pull out my music, and I’ll start practicing. It honestly makes me feel a lot better,” said Emily Mangan, a 15-year-old voice student who lives in Farmingville. Some teachers said music should not be stressful, but it should be used as a way for students to express themselves and help enhance their creativity. “Music should be looked at as something that someone should enjoy doing to release stress, to express themselves, and to explore,” said Troiano. “Students have been turning to music now more than ever to express themselves, to have an outlet for their feelings and frustration, or just to be a little bit more creative,” said Cypher.

According to the Gap Year Association, a gap year is a year “on” during which students, typically after graduating from high school, do not go directly to college. While no rules govern gap years, students who take them typically spend their year emphasizing experiential education. Some students challenge their comfort zones and make sacrifices during their gap years that they would not necessarily make if they went directly
from high school to college. Many students take gap years because they are unsure of what they want to study in college, and such students typically use the gap year to explore potential majors and career paths that might be available to them once they earn degrees in those fields. Other students may take gap years to volunteer, feeling that a year of service is both a great way to give back and to better understand the world
beyond the one in which they grew up. Burnout from the competitive pressures of high school is another reason many students take gap years. The Gap Year Association urges students considering gap years to do their research regarding the opportunities available to them during the year so their year is truly transformative and not merely a year to pass time without the pressures of school.

When disabled veteran Hank Urnaitis answered the door, he wasn’t expecting Paws of War to be there, ready to help him through the pandemic. But that’s just what they did. The organization, which helps veterans and animals, stopped by to provide Hank with face masks and pet food. They also teamed up with Cambridge Catering to take him some prepared meals. When they looked
around, they realized that he had some safety issues on his property that needed to be addressed, so they also got busy fixing those items, too. “Hank is a decorated veteran who we paired up a service dog with back in 2016,” explains John Walis, veteran relations director of Paws of War. “We know he’s humble and didn’t want to take the assistance, but we wanted to give back to our
veterans in need who won’t ask for help. It’s paramount that we are there for them and their service dogs now and in the future.” After delivering the essential items, the Paws of War team took to helping with some safety issues that needed to be done. They fixed unsafe boards in the steps leading up to his home, replaced tattered flags in his yard, and fixed an area of his fencing a tree

How Puzzles Promote Health And Wellness Puzzles are fun and entertaining, but their benefits go beyond simple recreation. In fact, playing and solving puzzles on a regular basis can benefit adults and children in various ways. Puzzles often stimulate problem-solving centers in the brain and can improve brain health. Researchers have found that, by completing crossword puzzles, playing challenging games or doing other puzzle-related activities, individuals may be less likely to develop brain plaques that have been tied to Alzheimer’s disease. Data published in the Archives of Neurology found a distinct connection between people who exercised their minds with stimulating activities in their early and middle years and brain health. This group had less Betaamyloid protein uptake in their brains, which is linked to the onset of Alzheimer’s, than those who didn’t engage in puzzles during the same
time frame. Beyond their health benefits, puzzles offer some additional perks. • Puzzles boost vocabulary. Puzzles such as crosswords or codewords/ cryptograms introduce people to new words. This helps people expand their vocabulary and can help them improve their spelling. • Puzzles teach patience. Puzzles can be challenging, and such challenges can promote patience in regard to approaching and realizing goals. • Puzzles can reinforce lessons. Teaching through puzzle play is an effective way to tap into memory retention while making lessons fun. • Puzzles may improve intelligence. Engaging in puzzles can force players to think and reason using general knowledge, memory, spatial imagery, and logic. These skills help to sharpen intellect over time. Michigan even found that adults could boost their IQs by four points after spending 25 minutes a day doing puzzles. • Puzzles reinforce concentration. Concentration is required to find words hidden in a word search puzzle or to solve a brainteaser.
