Of Energy and Evolution “The energy of the mind is the essence of life.” ~ Aristotle They say that what you put out into the universe in the form of energy, you receive back tenfold. In some manner, at some point in time, life cycles back around to pay us the karma we are supposedly owed. Most often, this is associated with the negative end of the spectrum; rarely are the positive applications of this theory every truly recognized and appreciated. I have often looked to those who seem the most consistently content and have wondered what it is that makes them able to sustain such a healthy sense of optimism and an inner peace that radiates outwardly into the universe. Simply put, they are

genuinely happy. They savor those aspects of life which many of us often take for granted. They make it a point to appreciate each and every moment, and to pay it forward in the manner in which they interact with others. To me, these are the types of individuals we should all strive to surround ourselves with, each and every day. Any opportunity to associate with a positive, breath of fresh air-type persona should be welcomed with open arms; there is no such thing as too much sunshine. In the end, it makes the inevitable storm clouds which manifest along the way that much more tolerable. Of course, this concept is not so simple as mere happiness by association. True bliss comes from within, as

who we are and who we desire to become slowly transition toward being one and the same. They say people don’t change, but I wholeheartedly disagree with that sentiment. We each possess a unique capacity to peel back the layers en route to uncovering infinite unknown qualities and characteristics as we continue to evolve over time. And change we do, each and every day, as our interactions with others, the circumstances we are faced with and our growth as human beings develop. There is no end to this evolution. We are a species built on progress. Why not begin with our own respective psyches? With a bit a time and effort, perhaps we, too, can one day be worthy of this admiration once only reserved for others.

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization that serves more than 3,000 people each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank, where its Suffolk County United Veterans project is based. The Press Club of Long Island hosted its annual journalism awards at a dinner at Woodbury Country Club on Thursday, June 7th. The latest inductees in the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame and winner of the Robert W. Greene Public Service Award were honored at the dinner. The highest individual honor bestowed by the press club is induction to the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame. This year’s inductees were Harvey Aronson, Brian Donovan and Carol Pack. Aronson was a writer, editor and writing coach at Newsday for more than 40 years. Today he is a lecturer at Stony Brook University. Donovan was a longtime investigative reporter at Newsday who has won numerous awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes. Pack is being inducted into the PCLI Contributor’s Wing of the Hall for her work

The keynote speaker was Carmen Marc Valvo, an internationally known fashion designer and a colon cancer survivor. It was in 2003 that Mr. Valvo realized that something was wrong. In his late forties at the time, he was just shy of the recommended age of 50 to begin colorectal cancer screening. However, Mr. Valvo said he listened to his body and insisted on having a colonoscopy, a decision that may have saved his life. Pond Day Participation Islip High School’s Keep Islip Clean student members celebrated the 12th annual Pond Day experience on May 23rd at the Seatuck Environmental Association’s Scully Estate in Islip. During the event, students assisted Seatuck personnel in the removal of an invasive species of swamp iris originally from Asia. The irises are filling in the property’s wetlands areas and competing with native plants by taking up valuable space and resources. Students removed enough invasive

plants to fill an entire dumpster. Lauren Cottral, a KIC junior commissioner said, “I got dirty, but it was for a great purpose – removing invasive species from Long Island!” After the cleanup, students participated in a press conference celebrating World Turtle Day, where legislation for the protection of diamondback terrapins was introduced. Terrapins, an endangered species of aquatic turtle, accidentally get caught in Long Island crab traps as by-catch.

Very little is known about their life cycle and habits, but they are essential in controlling snail populations that feed on dune grass, which protects Long Island from erosion during storms. Islip students witnessed the implementation of a new law that requires fisheries to include turtle excluder devices, or TEDs, on their crab pots. “I’m already looking forward to next year’s Pond Day,” said junior Ahkayla Davies.

Golf Team Plays at Counties East Islip High School’s girls golf team ended the season on a high note, finishing second in League III with a record of 7-3 and qualifying for the county tournament as a team.

Veterans Honored Congressman Pete King recently honored all the brave men and women of the American military, past and present, who have answered their nation's call to secure our life and liberty during a Great Armed Forces Day event in Hauppauge. The event was hosted by

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and attended by veterans from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars belonging to veterans organizations including the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Korean War,

the Vietnam Veterans of America. The Congressman noted that "The event demonstrated the obligation and commitment we have and must always have to these brave men and women."

SCMEA Scholarship East Islip High School junior Victoria Keenan was recently announced as the winner of the $500 SCMEA Burnhart Rydzeski Summer Scholarship, providing

her the opportunity for music study at the Ithaca Summer Music Academy this summer. Keenan, a violinist, has previously been selected to perform with the All-

County Orchestra and Long Island String Festival Association concert. She also plays in the school’s pit orchestra for musicals.

Suffolk County Legislators Tom Cilmi and Steven J. Flotteron honored Eagle Scout Matthew Michaels at his Court of Honor held at Heckscher State Park. Islip Terrace scout, Michaels, was the 74th Eagle Scout of Troop 205.

His Service Project was to develop, plan and implement, with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members was the community bulletin board and planter at the Timber Point County East Marina in Great River.

On his “Road to Eagle,” Michaels served Troop 205 as Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Quartermaster and Troop Guide – where he has been a role model to his younger scouts in their Rank Advancements.

We look forward to continuing our Senior Awards Night so that we can present these scholarships to our future graduates.”

Legislator Tom Cilmi presented a proclamation to Anna Humann, winner of this year’s “Be Pool Smart” poster contest. Anna is a first grade student from Connetquot Elementary School in Islip Terrace. Before being chosen by the Legislature’s Budget Review Office as the overall

winner, Anna’s poster was chosen by Legislator Cilmi’s office despite stiff competition. More than 200 entries were submitted to Legislator Cilmi’s office alone. Legislator Cilmi said, “For many reasons, art is an important component of a child’s education

and learning about pool safety saves lives. My congratulations go out to Anna and all of the students who participated, and I especially want to thank Mrs. Spera-Bartlett from the East Islip School District for inspiring such enthusiasm and creativity among her students.”

Meet the Val & Sal Islip High School’s Class of 2018 valedictorian and salutatorian are Julia Hormann and Madeline Marconi, respectively. Hormann, who earned a 105.12 weighted GPA, is the president of the school’s STEM Academy and Science Olympiad team, and vice-president of the National Honor Society. She is the captain of the varsity tennis team and performed in Islip’s school musicals. Hormann will attend College of Charleston Honors College

this fall, where she will major in biology. She plans to join the college’s pre-health advising program and pursue a career in immunotherapy and cancer research as a physician assistant or pediatric oncologist. Marconi, an AP Scholar with Distinction who finished with a 104.73 GPA, serves as co-president of the school’s Math Honor Society, vice-president of the National Honor Society and youth co-president of the Islip Drug Education

Awareness Community Task Force, as well as a member of the World Language Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, Peer Ambassadors and the school’s pit orchestra and varsity cheerleading team. She won the University of Rochester’s Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award and the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica Bertie Green Travel Award. Marconi will attend Yale University in the fall, majoring in architecture.
