Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi honored the studio by addressing the students, staff and audience. Students Welcomed To Town Hall

The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org

Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter welcomed students to Town Hall as part of the annual Elks’ Youth in Government Day visit. A total of 21 students in 6th and 7th grade from East Islip Middle School and St. Mary’s School took part, visiting the WRAP Recycling Center and the Shellfish Culture Facility. “Visiting Town government is an opportunity for students to expand their knowledge of an area that may be a potential career path. The students

consistently demonstrate a genuine interest in how their Town government works. It’s always a pleasure to host the Elks’ Youth in Government Day,” said Supervisor Carpenter. Students learned about recycling, the Adopt/ Recycle a Bike Program and important lessons on what to and not to throw out in the regular trash. At the hatchery, students learned how to cultivate oysters and clams before they are sold to shellfish farmers and were able to see the

parent oysters and clams, larva and baby shellfish at different stages. They also learned how algae is used to feed the shellfish, and the process that goes into creating the perfect environment in which to grow shellfish. Students enjoyed a pizza lunch while chatting with Parks and Rec staff, who explained the various services offered by the department as well as summer job opportunities.

There are plenty of success stories of people who benefited from their services. One in particular I’d like to spotlight is Nina’s. Nina was a single mother with one son. They both had a chronic illness that significantly impacted their health. She had struggled in the past to establish a life for her family because of the unpredictable nature of their health. All New Ground families and Veterans require a unique approach and plan of action, but this was considerably greater for Nina. She needed supports put in place to ensure her family’s future despite the ongoing need for unexpected lengthy breaks from employment. New Ground helped Nina to secure part time employment that was flexible, willing to adjust her schedule when she or her son suddenly required hospitalization or recovery time at home. Nina did significant work with her Social Worker on budgeting, creating a savings and developing strategies to adjust her spending if her household income suddenly decreased for

weeks at a time. New Ground assisted her with applying and obtaining certain benefits her family was eligible for because of their chronic illness. This included a housing choice voucher, allowing Nina to attain a market rent apartment while she paid an affordable portion of the rent based on her household income. After just under four years, Nina and her son successfully graduated into permanent housing. An apartment was found in the same neighborhood where their program apartment was located, ensuring Nina’s continued easy commute to work and her son’s continuation in the school district he had only recently entered. As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available! You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services. The 5th Ave. bridge over the Southern State Parkway was renamed the Detective John E. Thomas Sr. Memorial Bridge in honor of the late detective. The Bay Shore native, who previously served in the United States Navy during WWII, began his career in law enforcement in the Brightwaters Police Department, and was the first African American policeman in the Suffolk County Police Department.

Among Det. Thomas’ many accolades, was his heroism for rescuing two young children from a burning house where 5 people perished. He was subsequently named Policeman of the Year and was promoted to Detective. Det. Thomas worked in the Community Relations Bureau in the Bay Shore community. Following his retirement from the police department, John E.

Thomas, Sr. became the Director of Security, of the Bay Shore School District for more than a decade. “The legacy of Det. John E. Thomas Sr. will live on for generations to come through this bridge renaming,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “He was a pioneer, a family man and a pillar of the Bay Shore community,” she concluded.

Arthus, who earned a 106.30 weighted GPA, is a National Merit Commended Student and AP Scholar with Distinction. The president of the school’s Student Union, she also serves as

the school’s Mathletes captain and National Honor Society coordinating officer. Arthus will attend Rutgers University–New Brunswick Honors College in New Jersey, enrolled in a doctorate program in pharmacy. Southard, a National Merit Distinguished Scholar and AP Scholar with Distinction, finished

with a 104.24 GPA. The senior class vice president also serves as secretary of Islip’s National Honor Society and Science Olympiad vice president and is a member of the school’s varsity tennis team. Southard will attend Northeastern University in Boston, majoring in biochemistry.
