New York Blood Center Announces A Blood Emergency New York Blood Center (NYBC) announces a blood shortage in the region, one year after New York was the epicenter of the pandemic. Before COVID-19, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations like high schools, colleges, and offices. It has been one

year since these groups had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19 and few have been able to resume these lifesaving events. NYBC currently has a 4 day supply of blood, which is well below what is needed by area hospitals. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500

donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Donors with type O and type B blood are especially needed as NYBC currently has a 1-2 day supply of these blood types. “With thousands of New Yorkers getting

Yearbooks Are Important Mementos

Reaching senior year of high school or college is something to celebrate. It means that graduation is on the horizon and another chapter in students’ lives will soon come to a close, with a new one likely to begin shortly thereafter. School and graduation related traditions abound, from homecoming games to dances to class rings, and it can be difficult to figure out how to spend one’s time. While celebrations may look a little different this year due to the pandemic, yearbooks can offer a sense of normalcy for soon-to-be graduates. Seniors, particularly high school seniors, may find that their last year of school is, among many other things, expensive. In addition to college application fees, test prep courses, graduation garb, parties, photographs, and much more, students often weigh the option of purchasing a yearbook and wonder if it’s necessary. of time spent in school. Operation Deep Dive | Military Veteran Suicide Prevention Study Seeks Interviewees An average of 17 military veterans die by suicide every day, and Long Island residents have the opportunity to help end this crisis by supporting Operation Deep Dive (OpDD), a community-based veteran suicide prevention study taking place in New York and 12 other states across the country. The four-year study is led by national nonprofit America’s Warrior Partnership and researchers from the University of Alabama with support from the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation. The study directors will host a Facebook Live broadcast on Wednesday, June 16, at 2 p.m. EST to discuss local suicide prevention initiatives with guest speakers Beth Murphy, Senior Deputy Commissioner at Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs, and Marcelle Leis, Director of Veteran Services at

the Association for Mental Health and Wellness. The Facebook Live will be viewable on the America’s Warrior Partnership Facebook page both during and after the broadcast. It’s often said that some of the best ideas are born of necessity and that’s certainly the case with “Camp Color: Summer HumanitiesEnrichment for Middle School Students.” The plan began to gel when teachers Nadine Palumbo and Anthony Vittorino were discussing the detrimental effects of social distancing guidelines, hybrid learning, and a loss of extracurricular activities. “We each witnessed formerly engaged students shutting down and checking out emotionally by turning off their cameras screens and becoming passive,” said Palumbo, adding that “Countless family friends have also addressed concerns about their children’s ‘pandemic slide’ and feelings of depression.” They started testing out different formats, such as a distance-learning talk show to interview artists and authors about their creative process during the pandemic, but that seemed better suited only for high school level remote learning. Palumbo and Vittorino felt the challenges of the past year were particularly harmful to middle school students since, “They will be making a key transition from elementary to secondary school,” said Palumbo, who also serves on the vestry at St. Mark’s as well as on the

Popular Graduation Traditions Graduation is steeped in tradition. Come the day of graduation, many gradsto-be might be focusing on receiving their diplomas and then celebrating after the ceremony. The hard work students put in affords them every right to celebrate once they’re officially anointed as new grads, but before the party begins it can be fun to reflect on the many traditions associated with graduation ceremonies. Cap and gown Graduation ceremonies simply wouldn’t be the same without caps and gowns. The tradition is anything but new, as Columbia University notes caps and gowns have been linked to academia since the 12th century. Back then, students wore gowns and hoods to emulate the clergy who taught them, but also to stay warm. Many universities dressed their scholars in gowns from the 1700s onward. In 1786, one school, Brown University, even mandated that degree candidates be clad in flowing robes and caps at commencement ceremonies. Though educators and students

may no longer wear caps and gowns when attending class or around campus, the tradition of doing so at commencement ceremonies has endured. Tassel turning The tradition of turning the tassel does not have the lengthy history of the cap and gown, dating back only decades rather than centuries. Graduates typically turn the tassels after everyone has received their degrees during the ceremony. The turn is symbolic of their transition from student to graduate. Tassels start on the right for high school students and college undergraduates and are then turned to the left, while recipients of master’s degrees and doctorates keep their tassels on the left throughout the commencement ceremonies. Tossing caps in the air The tossing of graduation caps in the air is believed to date back more than 100 years. Prior to 1912, graduates of the United States Naval Academy had to serve as midshipmen for two years before they were commissioned as officers.

As a result, they still needed their graduation caps. But beginning with the class of 1912, graduates were automatically commissioned as officers, so they no longer needed their hats. That led the graduates to throw them in the air, thus beginning one of the more fun and photo-worthy graduation traditions. Pomp and Circumstance This tradition marked by the playing of “Pomp and Circumstance” is rooted in the work of William Shakespeare, which makes it seem like a perfect fit for graduation ceremonies. Sir Edward Elgar composed “Pomp and Circumstance” in 1901 and the title for the song was inspired by a line in the bard’s “Othello.” Elgar received an honorary degree from Yale University in 1905, and during that ceremony “Pomp and Circumstance” was played. The song apparently made a strong impression, as it soon began to be played at various commencement ceremonies, a tradition that continues today.

By spring 2021, the East Islip School District’s music students and teachers had completed half of a school year without an authentic performance experience and were looking for hope. Guided by Robert Wottawa II, the district’s director of art, ENL, music and world languages, the administrators and music teachers discussed the idea of a safe, outdoor spring concert series, and made the necessary plans and adjustments in regard to repertoire and instruction. To compensate for the loss of sound at these outdoor events, SDE Productions assisted with the sound system to ensure attendees could hear every note. The concert series began on May 11 at John F. Kennedy Elementary

School, with band and orchestra students performing in small groups on the blacktop while the community listened on the field nearby. On May 13, the musicians of Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School took the “stage” on their own campus, divided into groups by instrumental section, allowing the attending families to hear the individual nuances of each instrument. At East Islip High School, challenges arose due to a busy schedule of athletics teams, construction and outside practices, but a May 12 concert by the school’s band, orchestra and chorus students was successfully presented at the old football field behind the fieldhouse. This

was followed by a final May 17 event at which the high school’s honorslevel ensembles had the chance to share their last performance with the community. “Our families had tears in their eyes and expressed how happy they were to see their children perform,” Wottawa said. “I could not be prouder of the dedication of our teachers, custodians, buildings and grounds crew, security officers, and administrators – and the patience of our parents and students – as we navigated uncharted waters with an outdoor concert series. We can count our blessings that our music program overcame each challenge with grace and perseverance.”

Serve Steak Alongside A Backyard Barbecue Staple A night of al fresco dining next to a grill in the backyard can be a great way to spend Father’s Day! Nearly any type of food can be grilled, and steaks tend to be especially good when cooked over an open flame. The following recipe for “Grilled Rib-Eye Steaks with Mushroom-Shallot Butter” from Laurie McNamara’s “Simple Scratch” (Avery) is sure to please, especially when coupled with McNamara’s recipe for “Baked Beans,” a musthave staple for any backyard barbecue. Grilled Rib-Eye Steaks with Mushroom-Shallot Butter Serves 4 to 6 8 tablespoons (1 stick) plus 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature 1⁄2 cup sliced shallot 1 heaping cup sliced cremini mushrooms 2 large cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon coarsely chopped fresh thyme leaves 1⁄4 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more as needed 1⁄4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper, plus more as needed 4 to 6 steaks (such as ribeye, New York strip or porterhouse) Melt 1 tablespoon of the butter in a medium skillet over medium-low heat. Add the shallot and cook until golden and slightly crispy, 7 to 8 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the shallot to a clean plate. In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter, then add the mushrooms, garlic, thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir and cook until the mushrooms are softened, about 5 minutes. Transfer to the plate with the shallot and let cool. In a small bowl, use a rubber spatula to blend the remaining 8 tablespoons of butter with the cooled

mushroom mixture until combined. Place the butter in the center of a piece of parchment paper. Bring the edges together and press with your fingers to form the butter into a log. Roll and twist the ends before popping the butter into the refrigerator for at least 20 to 30 minutes. Set the steaks on the counter for 30 minutes to bring them up to room temperature. Meanwhile, preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high or about 400 F. Season both sides of the steaks with 2 pinches of salt and a pinch of pepper. Grill each steak for 6 to 8 minutes per side, depending on the thickness and the desired doneness. Tent with aluminum foil and let rest for 5 minutes. Slice the mushroom butter into coins and top each of the steaks with two coins before serving.

Combine the bacon and onion in a medium Dutch oven. Slowly cook over medium heat until the onion is tender and the bacon is cooked, 8 to 10 minutes. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, whisk together the ketchup, molasses, sugar, ground mustard, ground cloves, and 1 cup water to combine. Add the cooked beans and pour the mixture into the pot with the bacon and onion. Stir, cover and bake for 1 hour, stirring Baked Beans every 20 minutes. Serves 10 Add the salt and stir. 2 15-ounce cans navy Uncover and let sit for 15 to beans, drained and rinsed 20 minutes before serving.

While she didn’t set out to be, Army Sergeant Rode became an angel to a cat while serving in the Middle East. She’s on a mission to help Paws of War with the costs of rescuing her cat, which she named Bubba, back to the states with her since she has received new orders. It’s a mission that Paws of War can help her pull off, but only with the support of the community. This type of effort takes a

village, and the organization is asking people to support Sgt. Rode, who is serving her country. “This is a story you can’t help but to love and want to get behind,” explains Dereck Cartright, a disabled veteran who is the stateside logistics coordinator at Paws of War. “Sgt. Rode saved Bubba, but there’s only so much she can do on her own” When Sgt. Rode first saw

Bubba, he had given up. Bloody, frail, and injured, the cat ran from everyone. It was clear that he had been fighting for his life for a long time. Sgt. Rode knew she had to help. For days, she left food, waiting nearby to make sure he ate. Initially, he cried and backed away when he saw her, but eventually, he grew to trust her and allowed her to sit within just a few feet while he frantically ate the food she left.

Slowly but surely, Bubba allowed her to get a little closer until, finally, Sgt. Rode was able to touch him. However, what she discovered horrified her. Old scars mixed in with new wounds that covered Bubba’s body. He had been through a lot and was timid, but once he felt the kind touch of Sgt. Rode, he immediately began purring, showing her the love and affection he had never been shown. She became Bubba’s angel, and he became her greatest joy while serving overseas, and they were essentially inseparable. Worry came back to her when she received new orders to head home, and it was clear that she would not be able to take Bubba with her. She couldn’t stand the thought of leaving him behind to fend for himself or to try to find someone else to provide him with the love and care that he has grown accustomed to with her. When she heard about the work that Paws of War does, helping soldiers to get their pets back to the U.S., and she turned to it for assistance. “Bubba is such a wonderful cat, and he greets me every time he sees me and purrs loudly whenever I pet him,” says Sgt. Rode. “I have formed such a great bond with him, it took me so long to gain his trust, and I can’t fathom the thought of leaving him behind once I get deployed back to the U.S. He has been a wonderful companion and provides me so much comfort when I need it most. I could not leave this cat behind to suffer and die. He trusts me,

and I won’t let him down.” Paws of War is seeking the support of the community to cover the costs in order to bring Bubba back to the states to live out his life with Sgt. Rode. While the organization has helped many soldiers bring their rescued animals back, it’s a mission that is costly. Soldiers tend to rescue stray dogs and cats, and they form bonds with them that help them to find comfort during their time of deployment. With the help of donations from the community, they are able to cover the expenses that are involved in such a mission. The organization has helped so many soldiers with this type of mission that it has created a strong network of support. It’s that network that helps them to navigate through the challenges and logistics of relocating a pet overseas, and to pay for the care, paperwork, and flight that is involved in the mission. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers. This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand! If you live nearby the farm and would like to sign up for their Summer and or Fall CSA program, you can. Their crop shares are an easy way to guarantee farm fresh veggies for you and your family all season long. By joining their CSA program you will gain a connection to their farm and know exactly where your vegetables are coming from. You will receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown right in Centereach, while supporting your own neighbors. Their organically grown vegetables are harvested and packed the same day you receive them, cutting time and travel dramatically from field to fork. Members of their Summer CSA can expect to receive a wide variety of summer vegetables, including but not limited to, summer squashes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and a diverse array of greens. Members of their Fall CSA can expect to receive an assortment of winter squashes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, carrots, beets, as well as an assortment of greens. Additionally, anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at their farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM, which started on June 12th and runs through October 10th.
