Four East Islip Senior Track Athletes Sign For College Play Four exceptional East Islip High School senior track athletes – Gianna Motto, Joy Petersen, Jenna Scandale and Samantha Tucci – signed national letters of intent to continue their track careers in college this fall. Motto will attend SUNY Cortland, majoring in physical education. A member of East Islip’s league champion girls track teams, the sprinter is a two-time All-County and All-League honoree. She also earned ScholarAthlete recognition and fourth place at nationals. In academics, Motto was named to the school’s high honor roll. Petersen will attend Ithaca College, majoring in political science and history. Serving as twoyear captain of the 2021 league champion girls varsity cross country team, Petersen earned All-Long Island, All-County, AllDivision and All-League honors. Serving as captain

of the girls varsity winter track team, Petersen was a nationals qualifier in the 4x400 and sprint medley relays, earning All-County, All-Division and All-League honors. Serving also as captain of the league champion girls varsity spring track team, she was an individual division champion in the steeplechase and one of the county champions in the 4x800 relay, and earned All-Long Island, All-County, All-Division and All-League honors. In academics, Petersen earned a spot in the top 10% of her class and is a Scholar-Athlete. She serves as secretary of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and is a member of the school’s National Honor Society, Science Honor Society and World Language Honor Society. Scandale will attend the University of Delaware, majoring in secondary education. A sprinter and middle-distance runner

on the league champion varsity girls track team, she earned All-County, All-Division, All-League and Academic All-County honors, was the division champion in the 4x4 relay, small school county champion in the 4x4 relay, league champion in the 300-meter dash, and was named to the All-Long Island 3rd team for the 4x4 relay. Tucci will attend Murray State University in Kentucky, majoring in pre-veterinary science. A distance runner, she served as co-captain of the girls varsity cross-country and track teams, earning AllCounty, All-League and Scholar-Athlete honors. In academics, Tucci finished in the top 10% of her class, serves as secretary of the Science Honor Society, and is a member of the National Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society as well as an Ambassador Girl Scout.

East Islip HS Earns Record Numbers Of Teeny Awards Nominations

The Islip Arts Council introduced the tradition of the Teeny Awards 14 years ago as a way to publicly recognize the very talented theater students in high schools across the Town of Islip. The Teeny Awards are modeled after Broadway’s Tony Awards, recognizing students in the categories of Best Actor/Actress, Supporting Actor/Actress, Featured Actor/Actress and Best Ensemble, for both musicals and nonmusical plays. Special Recognition Awards are also given to students involved in crew, pit orchestra and poster artwork, and every director is given the opportunity to recognize a special student from each production for the “Director’s Choice” Award. A panel of judges attends each local high school production and evaluates the actors’ performances based on a rubric, and a Teeny Awards gala complete with red carpet and TV crew is held in early June. State Senators Alexis Weik and Phil Boyle recognized 300 Suffolk County veterans in a preMemorial Day tribute to soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who served in the Vietnam War. The “Vietnam War Veterans Commemoration” event was held at East Islip High School and featured presentations of certificates, commemorative Vietnam War service pins to each of the veterans and select family members. Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York (Little Flower) is a human services organization that transforms caring into action to deliver services, programs and direction to improve the lives of children and families in crisis and people with developmental and intellectual disabilities across New York City and Long Island.

Children who have experienced trauma, grief and loss, substance abuse, or have poor social skills, are verbally or physically aggressive, are on the autism spectrum, etc. are offered integrated interdisciplinary treatment in a therapeutic environment at the Residential Treatment Center (RTC) on their Wading River campus. An interdisciplinary treatment team of social workers, mental health staff, childcare staff, educators, medical professionals and a recreation therapist formulate individualized treatment plans that address the speciﬁc needs of each of those children. The underlying belief of the center is that a healthy community helps heal. At the RTC, children reside in modern cottages designed to feel like home. The cottages include individual rooms, common areas, a large dining room and a kitchen. Recreational programming there includes the Conway Recreation Center, athletic ﬁelds and courts and an outdoor swimming pool. The youth can also participate in off-campus recreation activities such as volunteer services and community involvement. The RTC also offers additional therapies and services, such as the Culinary Arts

Additionally, Little Flower also offers a Mental Health and Medical Department that utilizes a traumainformed, multi-systemic approach to support to all foster children. Adhering to best practices, nurses coordinate and monitor medical care, including overseeing weekly well-child clinic, and provide screenings, child and caregiver education, assist pediatricians with routine physicals and provide body checks as needed. Children receive dental services and are referred to specialists when recommended. In addition to the RTC, Little Flower also offers Community Family Treatment & Support Services (CFTSS) and Home and Community Based Services (HCBS). Their organization’s service providers address various needs, such as daily living skills, coping skills, crisis prevention, socialization and employment needs, via telehealth, in the home, school and community. In summer 2021, EastLine toured Long Island parks with an acclaimed production of Romeo & Juliet. In recent years, EastLine has produced Prospero (Live), an original musical based on The Tempest; the Long Island premiere of Paula Vogel’s Indecent; the black comedy Hand to God; a newlycommissioned adaptation of Antigone; a sold-out run of Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus in a tiny blackbox space; and a production of Treasure Island that BroadwayWorld said was ‘bursting at the seams with imagination’.
