Boy Scouts from Troop 327 in Islip Terrace (LR): Billy Blaschuk, Nick Lindstrom, Liam Gleeson, Nino Russo, Peter Gernand, James Blaschuk and Joseph Palladino were supervised by Assistant Scout Masters Mike Gleeson and Bill Blaschuk. This most recent effort is part of a plan for further stabilization and revitalization for Penataquit Creek.

Local Non-Proﬁt Is In Need Of Foster Homes For Cats! Alleykattz is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that operates on volunteers alone. The organization was formed in 2016 by Sonnia Cepeda. They service all of Long Island, New York City Metro and the surrounding areas. Their mission of rescuing abandoned and homeless cats, as well as cats in danger of abuse and neglect. Alleykatz has a strict

adoption policy to ensure cats and kittens get the best homes. Adoption application and a home visit are required before placement of a cat into a home. They believe that there is a good home for every cat they rescue and even though it might take a little longer for some to find their “furever” home, it is worth the wait if they end up in a happy home that suits them. Every cat is in foster care until the

right home is found and Alleykattz is currently in need of foster homes (preferably close to Long Island). BASEBALL TEAM STARTS SEASON WITH SUPERB SHUTOUT - East Islip High School’s varsity baseball team began their long-awaited season on May 8 with an impressive 9-0 victory over Half Hollow Hills West at the Moriches Athletic Complex. Senior starting pitcher John Rizzo Jr. set a school record, striking out 20 batters in a complete-game shutout. Rizzo also went 1-for-3 in hitting, driving in three runs. FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips As vaccinated New Yorkers begin to gather for nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their outdoor grills. With COVID precautions motivating more people to cook and grill at home, The FASNY urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President John Farrell.  “We want all residents to stay safe as we celebrate the coming summer days and consider basic grill safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow applicable social distancing rules to keep their families, and guests, safe.” According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills. Gas grills were involved in an average of 10,600 home fires per year, including 3,900

structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below: Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors; The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches; Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area; Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill; Never leave your grill unattended while in use; Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it; Always use foodapproved fire starters for wood grills and smokers. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a nonprofit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 30,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipiants can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. With a strong faith-based history and being that it is still owned by a local church, you will notice a strong Christian presence as soon as you walk onto their land. Faith based signs, a large wooden cross and a welcoming peaceful environment truly

makes this farm special. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has 6 distinct areas: The Memorial Garden: The Memorial Garden is at the front tip of their property. It is a quiet, shaded area with flowers, beautiful greenery and a peaceful waterfall to remember people who have passed on. The Education Garden: The Education Garden area grows many heirloom varieties, has a small compost area and hosts educational events for small groups. The Greenhouse: The Greenhouse allows this farm to extend their season during the colder months. The Community Garden: The Community Garden hosts Brookhaven Community garden plots. The Garden of Ephraim: The Garden of Ephraim is a wheelchair accessible garden, which consists of a beautiful paved area with raised beds! There is also street access directly into The Garden of Ephraim. Food Pantry Donation Area: This area of the farm consists of several acres of farm land and is the main growing area. The selfless efforts of all the volunteers that work hard to keep this farm afloat is truly a blessing. They don’t get paid a dime, but they love what they do. To me, this farm shines bright as a symbol of hope and resilience. However, it needs some more help itself. Following a thorough search process, the Islip School District has tapped Dr. Dennis P. O’Hara as its next superintendent of schools, effective July 1, 2021. Dr. O’Hara succeeds Dr. Ellen Semel, who will be retiring after a long tenure with the district this June. “Over the past several months the board of education has worked hard to identify the characteristics that our community desired in our next superintendent of schools,” Board of Education President Phil Dineen said. “One thing that resonated throughout this process was our community’s collective desire to select an individual who will work tirelessly to put students first, support our educators and engage with all stakeholders. I am extremely proud to say

him to our Islip school community.” Dr. O’Hara joins the Islip School District from the Hauppauge Union Free School District, where he has served as superintendent of schools since 2016. During his time in education, Dr. O’Hara has worked to cultivate trusting and mutually respectful relationships with all stakeholders. While serving in Hauppauge, Dr. O’Hara helped to raise student achievement, improve postsecondary outcomes and elevate the external reputation of the school district. These efforts resulted in a 30% increase in the district’s advanced regents diploma rate, a 10% increase in the number of students attending four-year colleges and national recognition

Prior to his work in Hauppauge, Dr. O’Hara served as the principal of the nationally ranked Oyster Bay High School for 13 years. He began his professional career in education as a classroom science teacher and has been published in various national publications. Dr. O’Hara is an affiliate

of several professional organizations and has presented on best practices to his colleagues across the region. Furthermore, he is the recipient of numerous accolades, including the School Superintendents Association’s 2018 Dr. Effie H. Jones Humanitarian Award. In his personal time, Dr. O’Hara enjoys serving as an ocean lifeguard at Robert Moses. “Since my own children were young boys, I have admired the Islip School District and community,” Dr. O’Hara said. “During every visit over the years, and recently, I could sense the tight-knit nature and feel the Islip pride. I am most excited to meet

students and families and find ways to be of service. I cannot wait to work with the many dedicated and hard-working teachers, administrators, and staff to help change students’ life trajectories. I feel blessed to be joining this school district and I am grateful to the board of education for their trust and support. Summer Clinics At Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescue Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescue is offering Summer Clinics every week from Monday, June 28 through Monday, August 30. During the clinic children will learn the ins and outs of a working horse rescue and will help groom, feed

and care for the horses and other animals on the farm. Cost is $45 per day for members or $65 for non-members. The clinics will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for children in grades 1 – 7. A “Leader in Training” program is available
