A body at this temperature may experience damage to the muscles, heart, kidneys, and brain. Flushed skin, altered mental state and rapid breathing may occur when suffering from heatstroke. A notable symptom of heatstroke is that perspiration stops completely. Rehydration, cooling the body and loosening tight clothes can help prevent serious consequences.

Home Garden Safe Fuel Containers (StatePoint) People are heading outdoors to prep lawns and gardens for the season and get their families ready for the warm weather. What’s the key common denominator for most of these activities? “Whether it’s using a tiller to start a garden or power washing the driveway, homeowners rely on fuel to jumpstart warm weather activities,” says Daniel Marshall, vice president of marketing and business development with Scepter. “Gasoline, kerosene and diesel fuel all link people to projects and activities outside the home.” No matter what fuelpowered chore you have to do around the home, a few simple considerations can help ensure you complete these tasks efficiently and safely. Stay Safe While unseen, fuel emits vapors that can be explosive. For that reason, keep burning cigarettes and other ignition sources away from fuel containers. Surprisingly, even cell phones can create a static charge that might ignite gasoline, so always keep them away from fueling efforts. If you’re in the middle of a task and need more fuel, shut off the engine. And importantly, let equipment

(NAPSI)—In this season of social distancing, many Americans are turning to gardening, finding joy and peace in an outdoor activity that can be safely enjoyed from home. “What all gardeners know, and the rest of you may discover, is that if you have even the smallest space, a pot on a window ledge, a front step, a wee yard, there is no balm to the soul greater than planting seeds,” recently wrote Charlotte Mendelsen for The New Yorker. Home Garden DIY Projects That Can Conserve Energy Around The House Home renovation projects can pay numerous dividends. Renovations can have a positive effect on resale value, make homes more livable for residents and, in some ways, make homes more affordable. Renovation projects that aim to conserve energy can save homeowners substantial amounts of money. Such projects don’t often require considerable effort or even sizable financial investments, which can make homeowners skeptical as to just how much they can save after completing the project. The scale of a project may have little to do with how much homeowners will save. For example, the U.S. Department of Energy notes that a relatively effortless task like turning back a thermostat between 7° and 10° F for eight hours per day can save homeowners as much as $83 per year. A more labor-intensive task like planting shade trees saves homeowners an average of between $35 and $119 per year. When looking for ways to conserve energy around the house and save money, homeowners need not necessarily commit to expensive projects. The DOE notes that the following are some energy-saving projects and details what homeowners can expect to save after completing them. While each individual project may not result in jaw-dropping savings, homeowners who follow many of these recommendations may end up saving more than $1,000 per year.

Long Island Media Group • Publishing Since 1953 • 631.226.2636 • www.SouthBaysNeighbor.com Using South Bay’s Neighbor Newspaper as a form of advertising has been a positive experience. It is the one local paper that is a staple here on the South Shore. I grew up with the South Bay in Lindenhurst and looked forward to receiving it when living in Massapequa and now in Massapequa Park. People stop me and comment how they see me in all the papers and honestly, theirs is the only one I advertise in, so I’m getting the exposure I wanted! Through this difficult time, it has been comforting to reach out to my account representative and have him respond so quickly, whether I am placing my own ad or an ad with other Signature Associates I work with and admire. I think it foolish not to buy print ads in the South Bay’s Neighbor, which is read by so many. Thank you for publishing this local paper. - Katherine C. of Signature Premier Properties
We have been advertising our homeowner’s homes in South Bay’s Neighbor Newspaper since 1995. Over the years, we have successfully worked together with several account representatives, thus combining our talents to create advertising copy & photo. We value our long-lasting relationship with South Bay’s Neighbor especially during these challenging Covid-19 times & we urge everyone to continue to support their neighborhood businesses. There are lessons to be learned during this pandemic if we really listen & hopefully as a society we‘ll emerge stronger, wiser, smarter, more compassionate & empathetic. - The Michele & Mark Goodman Team (516-655-6613) of Douglas Elliman Real Estate The Michele & Mark Goodman Team
I have been working with my account representative for the past couple of years to promote my company in the South Bay Neighbor Newspaper and he has always been so helpful and fast to get back to us with any issues that may arise. My attitude of gratitude starts with a huge thank you and profound/authentic appreciation for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspaper. This paper really helped put my salon business “on the map” by increasing my client base. I also wound up being contacted by Senator Brooks’ office in regards to being nominated for the Empire State Award, which I then won, after they learned about all that I do for the community while reading the South Bay. I absolutely love this paper and I’m forever grateful what they have done for me. - Eileen S. of Scanlon’s Traveling Salon

#READY2GOSAFELY - The Long Island Contruction Industry has been busy during the quarantine. They hammered away at helping, hospitals, first responders and the community. Then they came together, people from all the Long Island construction associations and various groups, to share information and work on gathering supplies and methods for a safe roll out. They want to continue that work with “sky banner”. A message down the center of LI and up the south shore beaches to symbolize unity and the importance of safe business practices as we get back to work. The respectful message is Gvnr. CuomoLI Construction #ready2goSafely. We want to keep the theme of responsibility going for our industry, said one anonymous industry member involved in the campaign.

The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways by this situation. Guardians of Rescue has been dealing with the Covid Crisis in many different ways, such as helping people feed their pets and taking on the responsibility to care for homeless animals. They have even stepped out of their realm of helping animals to assist seniors during these trying times. They are overwhelmed by the amount of assistance needed and their phones are ringing non-stop. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations have been down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Robert Misseri, President of this organization. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.” Robert is also the President of Paws of War, another non-profit right here on Long Island. This organization trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love only a companion animal can bring. Throughout this pandemic, they have been tending to the most at risk veterans. They find that their older senior veterans typically are very prideful and refuse to ask for any handouts. Many live alone and will still go out and put themselves at risk
to get food for their pets. However, Paws of War will at times arrive at their homes with no warning, knock on their door and tell them that they have some items to drop off for them. “You always see that tear in their eye” says Robert. “That someone actually cares enough to come to their home and bring them something is very special.” A lot of these veterans suffered for many years, all of which now have lifelong disabilities due to their service to our country. Paws of War feels that at the very least they can bring them pet food to give them a helping hand during these tough times. Additionally, Paws of War has partnered with Cambridge Catering, who is providing hot cooked meals free of charge to our veterans. Hank, a Smithtown resident and veteran, was someone that Paws of War helped. When they arrived at his home, they noticed a his two very proud flags were destroyed. They handed off the pet food and trays of hot food that Cambridge Catering has provided, but they didn’t stop there. They then went to the hardware store and purchased everything to fix and replace his flags. Guardians of Rescue and Paws of War can both use your support so they can continue to help others. Please visit www.guardiansofrescue.org/donate or www.pawsofwar.org/donate-today to give today. No amount is too small! Paws of War is also looking for volunteers with construction experience to assist in building catterys and dog houses for animals in need. For additional information, you can call Guardians of Rescue at 888-287-3864 and Paws of War at 631-FOR-PAWS.
If you would like your organization to be featured in the column or you have uplifting community news you’d like to share, please email Noelle@SouthBaysNeighbor.com.

Girls On The Run Long Island To Hold Its First Virtual 5k In June Local nonprofit Girls on the Run Long Island will be holding its first Virtual 5K run for free on June 20, 2020 open to all who wish to participate. Traditionally a run held at Hofstra University to conclude the organization’s 10week program for girls, the Spring 5K became a virtual run in response to COVID-19 and social distancing regulations. With options to complete the 3.1 mile distance at “your place, your pace,” kids and adults alike are welcome to participate at no cost to them. By registering for the run at www.gotrlongisland. org/5k, participants will
receive free downloadable goodies, such as a race bib to decorate and a finisher’s certificate. GOTR Long Island prize packs will also be raffled off, chosen from those who have registered, on June 20. Leading up to the run, GOTR Long Island will share information about the run and fun activities on its social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter at @gotrlongisland. This will include training for walking or running the 5K, indoor alternatives, and safety tips along with fun activities usually seen at a GOTR 5K. The traditional Happy Hair, kid-friendly
hair coloring, and Bling Your Bib activities will be included. A schedule of events will be released at a later date for the June 20 run and will be shared on social media. GIRLS ON THE RUN LONG ISLAND CONTINUES SUPPORT FOR GIRLS DURING COVID-19 As we are adjusting to a new way of life for the time being, Girls on the Run continues to provide inspiration, support and joy to our communities and girls during this challenging time. In addition to transitioning to a Virtual 5K event, we have
mobilized other strategies to drive our mission of inspiring girls to be joyful, healthy and confident: GOTR at Home provides fun and interactive lessons that girls and families can do at home, designed specifically for girls in mind! These lessons aim to provide girls of all abilities with an opportunity to learn and grow, just as they would have at their scheduled practices. GOTR at Home lessons are available in an easy-tofollow written format so girls and their grown-ups can participate together AND as a YouTube video series specifically for girls. # G O T R G o t Yo u r B a c k aligns with the Girls on the Run mission and values and includes content,
resources and activities to help girls and families stay physically active, connected and engaged. This digital campaign will offer alternative tips and activities for all families, volunteers, and followers to use and enjoy. Follow Girls On the Run Long Island on Facebook, Instagram @ gotrlongisland and website; w w w. g o t r l o n g i s l a n d . org for updates and information about the virtual 5K. About Girls On The Run Girls on the Run is a national physical activitybased positive youth development program for 3rd-8th grade girls. Participants develop and improve competence, feel
confidence in who they are, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with care, create positive connections with peers and adults and make a meaningful contribution to community and society. Each session is led by trained volunteer coaches that guide and mentor the girls. The ten-week program concludes with all participants completing a celebratory 5K event which gives them a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. Girls on the Run Long Island is proud to serve both Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island.

healthcare workers during this difficult time. “Normally during this time of the year, you can find our employees in bright orange T-shirts, gardening for Island Harvest, walking in the March of Dimes March for Babies, and participating in dozens of other community service events and activities,” said Janeen Johnson, PSEG Long Island’s manager of Diversity & Inclusion. “When the pandemic hit, our Diversity & Inclusion Council and employee business resource groups reflected on our commitment to community service and quickly found ways, such as these meal donations, to continue helping our neighbors while socially distancing.” Along with the food donations for healthcare heroes, PSEG Long Island has provided additional support for its customers: The PSEG Foundation, provided Island Harvest Food Bank with a $45,000 grant to reduce food insecurity during the pandemic. The PSEG Foundation gave a $25,000 grant to United Way of Long Island’s UNITED TOGETHER: A Response

Understanding Protective Respirators Respiratory protective devices are used in various industries to help block harmful contaminants from being inhaled through the nose and mouth. Sometimes called respirators or facemasks, respiratory protective devices are approved by various agencies that aim to protect and safeguard the public. Many masks are endorsed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, which oversees the prevention of workrelated illness and injury. The Food & Drug Administration also clears certain masks for their use in health care settings. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration also approve and recommend certain respirators. Each mask is categorized by a generalized rating. Understanding these ratings helps people identify how the respirator performs (how
much it filters) and the situations each mask is designed for. Ratings also indicate which substances the mask is designed to resist. The following are various types of disposable particulate respirators.
