Confirming their commitment to participate in collegiate athletics this fall, seven Islip High School seniors signed national letters of intent in a pride-filled ceremony in the school’s cafeteria on April 13. Administrators and family members joined the students as they officially pledged to play sports at the college of their choice. Students signing letters at the ceremony include Kaeli McAnally, who will play both basketball and softball for Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh; Carmelo Pagan, who is set to play football at SUNY Morrisville; Desiree Pagan, who will join the track team

at St. John’s University; Hunter Rindos, who is slated to play lacrosse at Georgian Court University in New Jersey; Amanda Sayles, who will cheer at the University of Delaware; Joseph Urban, who will play baseball for York College of Pennsylvania; and Noah Whitehouse, who will play lacrosse for Wingate University in North Carolina. “To the athletes and your families, I just want to say thank you for all that you’ve done to keep our athletic programs thriving,” Athletic Director John Sparacio said. “College is a great experience and I wish you all the best of luck. You’re going to have

a lot of fun and make some friendships that will last forever. Enjoy the journey, because it goes extremely fast.” “John and I both played in college, and I can tell you that it was absolutely the most critical experience in my life,” Principal Jon LaRochester told the student-athletes. “The journey to get to this point is going to pale in comparison to the journey you’re going to go on. Please appreciate what you’re about to do, and when you’re done, find time to give back, because the coaches and people that inspired you and helped you get to this point were once in your shoes.”

Meet Islip High School’s 2022 Valedictorian And Salutatorian

Islip High School’s Class of 2022 valedictorian and salutatorian are Timothy Mak and Anthony Lopez, respectively. The pair are best friends and have supported each other in reaching this pinnacle of high school academic achievement. Mak, who earned a 106.19 weighted GPA, serves as vice president of the school’s National Honor Society, president of the Interact Club and co-president of Mathletes. An AP Scholar with Distinction, he also serves as a junior commissioner of Keep Islip Clean Club and plays on the school’s varsity tennis team. In

his spare time, Mak is a junior instructor and second-degree black belt in mixed martial arts. He has not yet decided which college he will attend, but plans to major in finance/ accounting. “It’s been a lot of work since eighth grade,” Mak said. “Growing up with all my friends through this journey, and Anthony being my best friend since middle school, we worked together and through it, so it’s not really work. It’s doing something you enjoy and moving on to the next chapter of your life. I’m excited to see what the future holds for us.” Lopez, who earned a

105.13 weighted GPA, serves as president of the school’s World Language Honor Society, captain of the Science Olympiad team and co-president of Mathletes. An AP Scholar with Distinction and Gates Scholarship finalist, he also works as a citizenship preparatory class coteacher for Pronto. Lopez will attend Princeton University, majoring in biochemistry. “Throughout my years of high school, I’ve worked so hard, and it’s nice to finally see it all come to fruition,” Lopez said. “So here I am now at the end goal, and it’s nice to see what I have left in my future.”

Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The

Islip students recently raised $967 by participating in the American Legion Virtual Walk-A-Thon for veterans. The donations will help fund veterans’ organizations, including homeless service dog outreach. After classes on May 3,

flag-waving students and administrators walked to the U.S. Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Main Street, where they presented a check to American Legion representatives. American Legion Auxiliary RusyBohm Unit 411 President Paulette DeCrescenzo,

Suffolk County Auxiliary Vice President Joanne Johnson and Suffolk County American Legion Commander Roby Johnson all addressed the patriotic gathering, as did Superintendent Dr. Dennis O’Hara, whose son is deployed overseas.

One of this non-proﬁt’s programs that serves people in Suffolk County and Nassau County is called Chronic Health Care Coordination. Managed by program director Delmarie Gotti, Chronic Health Care Coordination supports individuals with such chronic illness as HIV/AIDS, mental health-related conditions, heart disease, diabetes, asthma and hepatitis C. It also serves populations with obesity, substance abuse problems, sickle cell disease and other long-term conditions. This Chronic Health Care Coordination program solely serves people with incomes below the poverty line. Participants, who must be on Medicaid, also often receive various forms of food and housing assistance. Because of their circumstances, and because of the day-to-day life challenges many participants face, it’s often difﬁcult for them to maintain a proper focus on the management of their chronic health needs. Many are jobless and many lack an adequate supply of food. Some are homeless or have lacked proper housing for years.

EOC of Suffolk team members help their clients “navigate the system.” They can assist with the filing of applications for various forms of public assistance. They may help connect participants with food pantries and help arrange assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps. Additionally, a support team from EOC of Suffolk can help clients find housing and even help arrange for the services of a moving company. If clients are grappling with behavioral or mental health issues, EOC staffers can help them get proper professional assistance. They’ll help participants get past possible stigmas often associated with mental illness. The EOC of Suffolk team can assist by lining up such support as therapeutic assistance, group therapy and medications. While individual care plans vary from client to client, the most common, long-term goal of the Chronic Health Care Coordination program is to help participants manage their personal health care needs, stabilize their lives, become independent and find work. Clients who achieve these goals “graduate” from the program, ready to move on with their lives on a firm foundation. Saf-T-Swim Helps Families Splash Into Long Island Summer Safely With Water Safety Acronym Saf-T-Swim announced a series of water safety tips to help families prepare for a safe, fun summer in and out of the water. The guidelines embody the proud member of the Long Island community’s mission to empower children with life-saving swim skills and dedication to teaching water safety. Now, says: “More than 90% of pool drownings happen at home involving young children while a caregiver was present. Swimming lessons, fencing, locking ladders, proper pool covers, and alarms can help this. Sadly, drowning statistics across the country have dramatically increased because of the pandemic, as there have been more pools installed and more distractions.”

As summer approaches, the local swim school urges parents and families to practice the following water safety tips from the Saf-T-Swim, Think Water Safety, Think S.P.L.A.S.H. guideline: S = Swim Lessons. It is imperative to teach children and caregivers how to swim and learn basic safety instructions. Swim lessons are an essential tool for helping

children learn life-saving skills year-round. In addition to providing fundamental knowledge and techniques, children also gain confidence while learning to love and respect the water. P = Put Away Toys, Put Up Ladder. All toys and ladders should be stored away when not in use to avoid slips and falls, or entry without supervision. L = Life Jackets. Life

jackets should be worn when on a boat, canoe, kayak, or paddleboard. A = Adult Always Watching. Children should never be left unattended in or near a pool or any body of water, including a bath. Be sure to establish an adult water watcher to make sure that no child is ever left unsupervised— not even for a minute. S = Shut All Gates. Use self-closing and

self-latching gates, gate alarms, pool alarms, children’s personal alarms, door alarms, and motion detecting devices. H = How to Rescue. Teach all caregivers infant, child/ adult CPR, first aid, and water rescue techniques. Always have the proper rescue equipment on hand: Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs), life ring, shepherds hook.
