Oldies but Goodies This week, I thought I’d throw it back to a classic from the archives, a column which received quite a bit of positive feedback leading up to last year’s Memorial Day. Reﬂecting on past traditions always tends to get the creative juices ﬂowing, so to speak, and memories of family gatherings are no exception… There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours of the weekend designated to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle

used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully stored away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tongue-in-

cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple just beginning their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program

Lastly, volunteers are needed for their Health Insurance Counseling Program. Volunteers inform seniors about Medicare and healthcare options to achieve a higher quality of life. Staying Classical Each student in Greg Kguloian’s freshman global history class at East Islip High School was recently given the opportunity to join intellectual forces with three other classmates to do research on a “reach and teach assignment” on one of six classical civilizations: the Persian Empire, ancient Greek city-states, the Mauryan Empire, the Gupta Empire, the Qin Dynasty and the Han Dynasty. The ninth-graders were encouraged to use classroom

textbooks, the internet and other reputable resources to gain information, put it into an interesting format and prepare audiovisual presentations. The groups of four were then asked to teach their “lesson” the way they would want to be taught. A peer-interactive questionand-answer session at the end of each presentation served to not only find out what the students learned, but also to allow the students teaching the lesson to determine how effective their lesson was via

instantaneous feedback. “I was most impressed with how each person in our classroom respectfully paid attention to their fellow students as they gave reports on their given classical civilization, took notes and asked appropriate questions,” said Kguloian. “I am extremely proud of the way they all helped each other to learn more. Our young people today deserve to be given the tools to be better potential leaders tomorrow.”

Teacher of Excellence In recognition of her outstanding teaching career, Rayna Monaghan, a longtime seventh- and eighth-grade English teacher at East Islip Middle School, was honored at the third annual Teacher of Excellence Awards ceremony. the North Babylon Fire Department. During her time at East Islip, Monaghan transformed from a novice teacher to a leader in her department, working closely with the school’s literacy consultant during the last three years to implement a balanced literacy program. She has

developed curriculum with her colleagues, which she has presented at a local conference and to other districts. She also participates in the New York State Network Team Institute, gaining knowledge, which she has then shared with her department. Although there have been many books and articles written about the power of positive thinking, new findings about its importance in daily living are always surfacing. The old saying, “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” still holds true more than ever. We begin this update with a look at how attitudes are formed. To start, a stimulus enters your consciousness and ends with a response. However, in between the stimuli and response is what I like to call “the buffer zone,” where your brain makes a split-second decision whether to act favorably on the stimuli (hence the response will be more favorable), or the reverse will be true. If you are like most people, this type of interaction occurs with high frequency daily. In a broad sense, positive thinking is the carrier which turns negative thoughts into positive ones. Some examples of its many benefits include: giving you a pleasant feeling of high esteem, coupled with a sense of self-fulfillment. This can be enough to really make a person’s day without him/her realizing what caused it!

Further, it can enhance your level of satisfaction and feeling of well-being. In many cases, this effect can automatically be blended with the above paragraph on high esteem and self-fulfillment. By giving well-deserved thanks to others whom you come in contact with, both you and the other person have the potential to feel better. The key here is that it must be based on a factual, pleasant event. It cannot be accomplished with false praise. If this occurs, you will be looking at a person who feels good throughout the day and never gives a thought to the cause. Have you witnessed this in another person? Better yet, has it ever happened to you? Now, let’s bring all of this into the world of everyday living. Wouldn’t it be nice to learn some tips on how to turn a negative into a positive? Situation: Someone is driving and trying to cut into your lane with good reason. Some people (whatever their motive) will pull up closer to the car in front of them and not allow this. To add insult to injury, they will never make eye

The Power of Positive Thinking contact with you. Response: If this is happening to you, quickly take several deep breaths, slow down and wave that person to enter his/ her car in front of yours. In most cases, the person will give you a friendly wave and smile - and you will feel good about it too! Situation: You are walking behind an elderly person who is walking at a very slow pace, and the green light is about to turn red. Although she is in the proper crossing lane, she is in danger of being hit by an aggressive driver. Response: Walk rapidly until you are in front of her and gently suggest that you both walk faster to cross safely to the other side. If necessary (and with her permission), gently take her arm and proceed. Special Tip I have used the following method for many years with much success, and I now will pass it on to you. It consists of two simple parts: Part #1: Shortly before you fall asleep, think of all the good things you

could accomplish during the next day. Concentrate for a few moments on each one you have selected. What most people don’t realize is that, while you sleep, your subconscious takes over and “stores it” for the next day! Part #2: Upon waking (and continuing) throughout your early morning routine before breakfast, think of some good things you could do today, and don’t forget to include yourself if appropriate. Now, here’s the really interesting part; in most cases, this list will come easily to you. Do you know why? It’s because your subconscious worked most of the night to develop this for you! May I ask a favor for any of my readers who might be doubtful about this? Please give it a try. It will take a bit of practice to perfect this technique, but keep going. The results you obtain will be well worth the effort. Now, you are ready to move forward and give it a try. Remember to be patient with the process – it will pay you back in many ways. ~ Peace ~

In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.

Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down. Meditate. When stressed out, men and women should not discount the potential beneﬁts of meditation. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University examined more than 19,000 meditation

studies, ultimately concluding that mindful meditation can ease stresses like anxiety, depression and pain. The APA notes that such meditation has been found to reap immediate benefits, potentially helping people who can find time to meditate during the day to prevent their stress from accumulating throughout a hectic workday. Find time to exercise. The APA notes that research continues to support the notion that exercise is as beneficial to the mind as it is to the body. Exercising several days per week is especially beneficial to mind and body, but even 20-minute exercise sessions, including a walk around the grounds of an office complex or a quick swim during a lunch break, in the midst of stressful days can

help people combat stress for several hours afterward. Delegate more during the day. Work is the third-leading source of stress among Americans. Men and women who feel overworked may beneﬁt by delegating more tasks during their days or simply stepping back and taking on less work. The potential effects on your career of taking on less work will likely pale in comparison to the toll chronic stress, which can contribute to heart disease and stroke, takes on your body. Stress is a part of daily life for many people. But there are several simple and quick ways for stressed out men and women to reduce their stress during the day.

Isolated incidents where people cannot recall where they placed their car keys or other minor bouts with forgetfulness do not occur by accident. In fact, the Harvard Medical School notes that they are likely byproducts of age-related changes in thinking skills. When people reach their 50s, chemical and structural changes in the brain may begin to occur, and these changes can affect a person’s ability to process memories. Father Time may be a formidable foe, but people can take steps to give their memories a boost as they get older: Embrace recognition instead of trusting recall. Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist who specializes in behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, notes that human beings are better at recognition than recall. That means people are more likely to remember something they read, such as a note or a list, than something they’re simply told.

Eat a healthy diet. A study published in 2015 in the journal Neurology found that people who eat healthy diets with lots of fruits, vegetables, nuts and ﬁsh and little alcohol and red meat may be less likely to experience declines in their memory and thinking skills. Authored by Andrew Smyth of McMaster University in Ontario and the National University of Ireland in Galway, the study followed more than 27,000 people in 40 countries for an average of roughly ﬁve years. All participants were 55 and older and had diabetes or a history of heart disease, stroke or peripheral artery disease. Those who ate the healthiest diets were 24 percent less likely to experience cognitive decline than people with the least healthy diets.

Prevent Blindness America says that eye fatigue, dryness and blurred vision are some of the common effects of prolonged screen use, but these are not the only concerns. Digital devices also expose the eyes to blue light. While research as to how blue light impacts vision is ongoing, there is concern over the long-term effects of screen exposure since these screens are in close proximity to the eyes and use is often prolonged. Prevent Blindness America says that studies suggest continued exposure to blue light over time can lead to difﬁculty focusing, premature aging of the eyes and even damage to retinal cells. A recent study by the National Eye Institute found the frequency of myopia, also known as near-sightedness, has increased exponentially in the last few years. Reasons include a spike in time

Eyes, just like any other muscle, require a varied workout to remain healthy. Many vision experts recommend the 20-20-20 rule. According to this rule, for every 20 minutes of looking at a screen, a person should look away at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds or more. This will help eye muscles to relax. The group All About Vision says to use proper lighting, such as ambient lighting. Position a computer monitor so that windows or lights are to the sides instead of in front or behind it. Be sure indoor light isn’t too bright, as bright light can contribute to glare and fatigue. Antireﬂective lenses on eyeglasses or ﬁlters for screens also can help absorb some of the blue light and limit how much reaches the retina and accesses the central nerve of the eye. This may alleviate digital eye strain as well. Screen users may want to adjust the display of their devices so they feature a cool, gray tone, which produces less glare. Eyes can be adversely affected by screen time unless strategies are implemented to limit strain and to rest muscles.

The East Islip School District’s 2018-2019 budget passed on May 15th, with 1,873 yes votes outweighing the 933 no votes. The district thanks the community for their participation and support.

East Islip voters also approved the ballot proposition for a capital improvement bond by a total of 1,680 yes votes to 1,116 no votes. For East Islip’s fiveperson Board of Education,

voters reelected two incumbents, Board President Jessica Carney (1,852 votes) and Vice President Philip Montuori Sr. (1,704 votes), both running unopposed.

Taking on Plastic

SENIORS & STUDENTS UNITE - Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently visited the Joyce Fitzpatrick Senior Center and Cape Cod Learning Center, as seniors and students alike united to plant ﬂowers for Mother’s Day. Grouped under sunshine and shade in the picnic area between the two centers, the intergenerational pairing potted plants and succulents which the students later gave to their mothers. The cross-generational event brought together the wisdom and guidance of the seniors with the joviality of the students, for an afternoon of laughs and goodwill.

Eighth-grade life science students at Islip Middle School prepared for Earth Day last month by participating in the school’s annual oncampus cleanup of Orowoc Lake. Equipped with waders, nets and buckets, students braved cool weather and chilly waters as they removed plastic bottles and plastic bags from the lake. “They were amazed by the amount of plastic trash that collected in the very waters that they had grown to love and appreciate this year,” said teacher AnnMarie Mills. “This outdoor activity supported the lessons taught inside the classroom that focused on the harmful effects that these plastics have on our environment, especially

plastic bags.” The Seatuck Environmental Association enlisted the help of the life science students for their ninth annual EcoCarnival by requesting that the eighth-graders design a “plastic bag garland” that would spur interest and curiosity in the event’s visitors. “Our students were eager to help support the organization and immediately went to work,” said Mills. “They were so enthusiastic that the garland grew to a whopping 400 feet. Fellow students and educators gasped as they walked past room 105 and their response inspired the idea of displaying this seemingly never-ending garland on Main Street for all

to see.” On April 20, the school erected a plastic bag art instillation along the fence that lines Main Street with the hopes of generating awareness of society’s dependence on plastic. Multiple classes had the opportunity to walk through the ﬂuttering bags on the windy day. “The students described the experience as powerful, saddening and amazing,” said Mills. “The honking response of community members as they drove by generated as sense of validation, that this war on single-use plastics is supported by many and once again, the opinions and voices of our generation are being heard.”

Happy Memorial Day

Amanda Kreush, a star senior bowler for East Islip High School, signed a national letter of intent on May 4th to play for Molloy College in Rockville Centre his fall. She plans to major in early childhood education while bowling for the Lions. Kreush, who joined the varsity team as a seventh-grader and served as captain of the Lady Redmen during her junior and senior years, had a remarkable career at East Islip. During her tenure, the team went undefeated as league champions for six consecutive years as well as winning state and
