Honoring the military Although Memorial Day pays homage to the brave people who perished fighting for their country, it also is an opportunity to recognize the military men and women and their families who continue to work to ensure the freedom of Americans. The United States Armed Forces is renowned for its size and strength. Various sources suggest the size of the United States military is somewhere between 1.4 and 1.6 million active service people. The military is comprised of the Army, Army National Guard, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Each of these military branches also has its own reserves. There are many ways to honor active,

reserve and former veterans, as well as those who died in service of their country. • Help Veterans of Foreign Wars distribute red poppies as a visual reminder of the military’s efforts. • Volunteer at a veterans’ hospital or visit a wounded veteran at home. • Offer financial, legal or career expertise through the Corporation for National & Community Service (serve. gov). • Help to maintain the veteran area of a nearby cemetery. Place flags on all of the graves. • Befriend military families who frequently relocate, making a concerted effort to welcome them into your community. • Educate children about past wars and the services the military provides. • Visit a military museum or historic site. • Observe the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 pm local time for one minute. • Post a message to the troops at the USO website (uso.org).

Memorial Day origins Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day and was borne out of the Civil War. On May 30, 1868, General John Logan, a national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, decreed General Order No. 11, which designated the day for the “purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.” May 30th was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.

It took several years for the first state to recognize the holiday, which New York adopted in 1873. By 1890, all northern states recognized Decoration Day. When the holiday changed from commemorating those who died fighting the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war after World War I, the south began to recognize it as well.

Memorial Day is celebrated each May to commemorate the people who died in service of the United States of America. Even though barbecues and visions of the upcoming summer weather may command much of the attention come Memorial Day weekend, the holiday really serves as a remembrance for those military members who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country, as well as the personnel who continue to protect and serve today.

The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) www.BACAworld.org

Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help.

From there it was only a matter of time before the word spread quickly about what was happening in Utah. Shortly after forming the first chapter in Utah, another chapter was formed in that state, then Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas. The rest is part of the B.A.C.A. history. One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group! The brotherhood and family values are not just a

You can also donate to this organization at anytime on their website. Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: Agape Community Church Mastic, NY Agape Community Church is a non-profit organization based in Mastic. They are focused on the Long Island community and will be holding their annual Back To School Event on Saturday, August 17 from 12-5PM, where they will be giving away free school supplies and they will serve refreshments. They are already taking donations for this event and are attempting to raise additional funds and supplies this year. They understand that a lot of children may begin a new school year this upcoming fall without all the needed supplies. This organization started as an idea to help one wounded child. This child was eight years old at the time and was so frightened of his perpetrators that he would not leave his residence. Their founder, having had kind and loving experiences with bikers in his youth, was moved to include this boy in his biker circle. Within weeks this boy was seen all over town playing with other children and riding his bike. The idea to rally the biker community in defense and in support of children was actualized in 1995, when the first ride was held to visit wounded children and bring them into the biker family. That first ride had twenty seven bikes present.

“My Fair Lady” at Lincoln Center East Islip High School juniors and seniors visited the Vivian Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center on April 3 to watch Lerner and Loewe’s classic musical production of “My Fair Lady,” featuring Tony-award winners Laura Benanti and Danny Burstein. The students also enjoyed seeing such famous New York City

landmarks as the Lincoln Center fountain, the Metropolitan Opera House and the Julliard School of Music. “Most of our students were familiar with the storyline since ‘Pygmalion,’ the George Bernard Shaw play which is the source material for the musical, is taught in ninth grade,” said English

teacher Linda Leach. “It was exciting to realize that a key role, Mrs. Higgins, was played by Rosemary Harris, a 92-year-old Tonyaward winning actress who performed with many distinguished actors including Richard Burton, Laurence Olivier and Peter O’Toole.”

Getting The Real Story After two years of working as an accountant, he shifted to Oppenheimer and Co., researching financial service companies that specialized in mortgages. It was there that his analysis of flawed subprime mortgages led to the events depicted in the book and film. Daniel later worked at Keefe, Bruyette, & Woods; was a partner, executive director and financial analyst at FrontPoint; and cofounded Seawolf Capital, where he served as head analyst. In describing what he does today, Daniel likened his job as a portfolio manager to being a professional gambler. “I make investments on stocks and hopefully produce a return for my investors,” he said. Before diving into a question-and-answer session, Daniel left the eager students with solid

career advice, saying, “If you remember anything I said today, it’s this: Choose a profession that you love. One of the greatest things in life is to wake up and want to go to work. So, whatever you want to do, do that. Secondly, take public speaking classes and get over the fear of speaking. It’s very important to communicate and understand how to communicate. Three, if you want to be in my profession and get on Wall Street, you’re going to have to learn how to program and code, and if you want to analyze companies, learn how to use Excel. If you want to do what I do, model out a company. Look at their financial statements in the past and project forward. Invest in them, see how it feels to make money, and more importantly, see what it’s like to lose money.”

Islip High School’s Business Academy students were recently treated to a visit from Vincent Daniel, the real-life stock analyst portrayed in the 2015 film “The Big Short” and the 2010 Michael Lewis book it was based on, “The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine.” Both stories showed how Daniel predicted the housing market crash of 2007. Daniel began by discussing his college accounting studies at Binghamton University, his, career trajectory and possible job pathways. “The goal in college for me was to come out and get a job, and I wanted to be in business, so accounting was best way at the time,” he said. “My goal was to get my CPA. But I hated what I did. I loved what accounting taught me, but I always wanted to get to Wall Street.”
