The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue and could really use your help. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations to this organization are down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “We have been providing our rescue services for over 10 years, but now we are struggling to keep our organization going,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We are in jeopardy because of the perfect storm that this pandemic has created for organizations such as ours. Many people are living paycheck to paycheck so pets are in trouble.” “The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Misseri. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.” To help support Guardians of Rescue, please make a donation online at www. guardiansofrescue.org/donate.

A couple of weeks ago I invited readers to submit good news they have heard amid these trying times. Below is a heartfelt and inspring submission that I’d like to share it with you all. Mr. & Mrs. Garvey live in Babylon with their 3 children, Kate (11) and Eloise and Sam (10 year old twins). Since the beginning of the stay-at-home order, their kids decided to set up a table on their driveway every single day, weather permitting, to collect food for St. Joseph’s Food Pantry. A neighbor (Anthony Pascarella - owner of CJS Printing ) whom they did not know before the food drive, dropped off several printed signs for them, unsolicited and free of charge. The signs have been very helpful in alerting the community about the food drive. When they began collecting food in late March, Kate, Eloise and Sam set a goal for themselves to collect 1 ton of non-perishable food items and paper products, and they have already surpassed it! With 3000 pounds of donated food collected, they are exited and confident they can reach their new goal of 2 tons very soon. With smiling faces, a passion for others and a spirit of giving, these children have made a big impact on their community. Many people are doing all they can to assist those in need and make a difference, but it is always enlightening to see young children doing so on their own! Also, a big thanks to Fred Shores and the entire Babylon Community for their generous donations, and to Anthony Pascarella for his random act of kindness!

East Islip’s Zhang Earns Town Of Islip Leadership Award East Islip High School junior and Student Council President Olivia Zhang was recently selected as the winner of the Town of Islip Student Achievement Award for Leadership. Zhang is also a member of her school’s Math Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, Interact Club, Academic Team and tennis and track teams. She was recently chosen to be a facilitator for the Rotary
Club’s Youth Leadership program, to teach teambuilding activities and leadership skills to high school sophomores from across Long Island. In addition, Zhang holds the rank of petty officer second class in the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps. Last summer, she was part of the first all-female sailing crew in Sea Cadet history and authored a full-page article about her experiences sailing
the New England Coast for “Sea Cadet Quarterly” magazine. She was chosen to conduct research with the Arctic Buoy STEM Program and will travel to USNSCC National Headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, where she will help build research buoys to be deployed in the Arctic Circle. “All the wonderful opportunities offered at East Islip High School have helped to build my self-
confidence and leadership qualities,” Zhang said. “Olivia is a natural leader who uses her leadership role to help boost morale and increase student pride in her school and the East Islip community,” said her teacher and club adviser Lisa Rapiejko, who nominated Zhang for the Student Achievement Award. We are proud of her accomplishments and her demonstration of EI pride.”

Renu And Promise Of Hope Provide Masks For Islip’s Children Children’s masks were distributed at Islip High School on April 23 and 24, donated by the district’s vendor Renu. The initiative was organized by Scott Colletti and Mike VanDenburg, who formed the Promise for Hope organization to help students in need. They
have also donated masks to the Brentwood, Bay Shore, Central Islip and East Islip school districts. “We are very grateful for their thoughtfulness and generosity, as masks are difficult to get,” said Islip Superintendent Ellen Semel. During the schools’
closure due to the coronavirus, Islip has been providing meals for students’ families daily, with pickup at the high school. The masks were offered during the district’s regular lunch distribution hours from 10 a.m. to noon.
