Hope House Ministries is a non-proﬁt organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. Their mission is founded in the spirit of St. Louis de Montfort, who had a commitment to the poor and the courage to do what no one else had the courage to do. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal ﬁnancial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. Hope House Ministries was founded by Fr. Francis Pizzarelli, SMM, LCSW-R, ACSW, DCSW. 41 years ago, Fr. Francis discovered hundreds of youth who were homeless, experiencing mental health issues and living with addictions and it wasn’t long before he realized that neither government nor faith communities were doing enough to meet the crisis of homelessness. The results showed large effect sizes, indicating a strong TM treatment impact in reducing trauma symptoms for both PTSD measures. Other facts associated with trauma, such as depression and anxiety symptoms and sleep problems, also showed a strong impact as a result of TM treatment. “This trial corroborates the findings of a large clinical trial published in The Lancet Psychiatry,” said Sanford Nidich, Ed.D., Director of the Center for Social-Emotional Health at Maharishi International University Research Institute, and study coinvestigator. “The current study further supports the effectiveness of Transcendental Meditation as a first-line treatment for PTSD in veterans. The availability of an additional evidence-based therapy

will benefit veterans, both by offering them a greater range of options and by serving as an alternative treatment strategy for those who don’t want to engage in trauma-focused treatment or who aren’t responding to a previous PTSD intervention.” The authors pointed out in their research paper that TM may positively affect trauma symptom severity through the reduction of hyperarousal symptoms. Previous research has shown that the practice of TM decreases physiological responses to stressful stimuli. In addition, recent research indicates that TM may improve resilience and positive coping strategies, providing further benefit to both veterans and active military personnel.

for PTSD that are traumafocused and based on a patient’s recall of past traumatic experiences, this intervention does not require extensive review of traumatic history, which some individuals find difficult to engage in. This intervention may therefore be more tolerable for some individuals struggling with PTSD.” The randomized controlled trial assigned 40 veterans with documented PTSD to either the TM group or a “treatment as usual” control group. The TM treatment provided 16 sessions over 12 weeks, with twice-aday daily home practice. PTSD symptom severity was assessed with the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5, and patient self-report with the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5.

Veterans with posttraumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) who practiced the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique showed significant reductions in symptom severity, according to a new study published in the Journal of Traumatic Stress http:// doi.org/10.1002/jts.22665.
