Even When You Think You Can’t “It is your decisions, and not your conditions, that determine your destiny.” - Tony Robbins This morning I was speaking to someone very important in my life and I expressed that I felt as though something was holding me down, making me feel heavy and sad. Yes, I was feeling a bit depressed today. I’ve never been completely comfortable baring my soul to people in my life, instead feeling more at home in the position of helper as opposed to helpee. When, I myself, am struggling, I will rarely venture to confide in someone, and when I do, I expect a lot of the typical platitudes and that’s okay. I know that just because someone loves you, it doesn’t mean they are always going to have just the right words at just the right time. That’s been my job (literally). But I have to say, this one shocked and amazed me. I’ll never doubt the value of a good heart to heart pep talk again. I think I said, “I can’t do my column today, I just can’t. I’m feeling too down in the dumps
(yes, it happens). I thought I was going to be fully supported in throwing in the towel for the week. If I’m being honest, that is what I thought I wanted. Instead, he said to me, “Do you know why I wake up at 4 AM each morning to go to the gym before I start my day?” I was tempted to say, “Um, because you’re crazy?” I get up at 6 AM, and as you all know, 6 AM to 7 AM is my sacred morning hour, but 4 AM would never happen. A girl needs her sleep! My friend continued, “I get up at 4 AM each day to go to the gym and purposely lift weight that drags me down and offers me resistance so that I can overcome that resistance, lift myself back up and build more muscle.” I knew he was a workout devotee, but I must admit, I never thought of it as a metaphor for life. And to think I’ve watched every Rocky movie ever made. I’ve had plenty of moments in my life where things were so smooth and I was so ridiculously blessed that being happy, enthusiastic and inspired was a no-brainer. What I have humbly
come to realize is that when you preach from a privileged soapbox, you can only reach so far. Yes, the last several months have been filled with some interesting ups and downs and some things that haven’t felt so pleasant. They have also been filled with massive growth and perspective, and yes, I have been developing a lot of new muscles. I was not let off the hook this morning. The beautiful thing is that not having to write was what I wanted, but not what I needed in order to grow. I needed to be stretched past my comfort zone today, lovingly yet firmly. We all fall into that trap at times, where we are looking for excuses to be less than great. At that moment this morning, someone loved me enough to remind me that although my reason to not want to write this particular column was valid, it would not take me where I needed, and ultimately wanted, to go. Pushing past some temporary discomfort to get the job done would.

Let's Make Dirty Rice Dirty Rice is a fun and variant rice dish, with plenty of room for improvisation. Even better, you can make a vegan version or incorporate sausage into the dish. What You Will Need
1 cup White Rice 1 generous dash of turmeric 1 dash of black pepper 1 dash of sea salt Finely chopped half red pepper Finely chopped half green pepper Finely chopped portabello mushrooms 1/4 cup lentils 1/4 cup black eyed peas 1/2 cup green peas Finely chopped sausage (whatever kind you prefer) to taste (optional)
Preparation Soak lentils and black eyed peas together in a medium stovetop pot of tepid water for 30 minutes to soften them. Then rinse them and place them in fresh water, letting them simmer on medium heat for approx. 45 minutes or until they are soft, but still intact. Set aside and cover to retain heat. Boil and then simmer rice, according
to box instructions. Rice typically boils vigorously for 1 minute and then simmers on low heat with a closed lid for approx. 25 minutes. Chop up all veggies and steam on the stove top until they are all tender, yet firm. Add and mix turmeric, black pepper and salt into rice as it is cooking. Rice should turn yellow. Microwave frozen, steam-able green peas for speed. Add all vegetables, along with lentils and black eyed peas, into the rice and stir. If desired, cut up your sausage into round disked slices and then cut those slices into fourths. If pre-cooked, add into rice mixture. If not, cook first and then add. Let entire rice mixture continue to heat on low heat with lid, on the stove top for 20 more minutes, and enjoy! Basketball buffs from fourth and fifth grade classes at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools competed at the school level for the 33rd annual Town of Islip Sharp Shooter Basketball Contest. Sponsored since 1993 by the Islip Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs and the Islip Elks, the Sharp Shooter “Just Say No to Drugs” program offers local students the challenge of scoring as many baskets as possible in one minute, improving their skills in
basketball while providing an alternative to drug abuse. Earning first place for JFK at the school level were fourth graders Olivia Shaw and Lucas Trager, and fifth graders Kiera Bloch and Ian Frey. JFK’s second-place finishers were fourth graders Avery Bowden and Evan Gordon, and fifth graders Chloe Garatina and Jake Nieves. Earning first place for RCK at the school level were fourth graders Kevin Deflippis and Alexis Kneisel, and fifth graders
Iyana Carpenter and Blake Gilchrist. RCK’s other finishers included fourth graders Kayla Penny and Syiel Tunstall and fifth graders Devin Franklin, Brianna Martin and Grace Micali in second place, and fourth graders Brea Oquendo, Carman Ortiz and Liliana Pasha and fifth-grader Jack Connors in third place. Each school’s four firstplace winners moved on to participate in the townwide contest’s final round, held on March 2 at East Islip High School.
Knowledge of Social Studies Fifth-graders at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School proudly shared their knowledge of the Western Hemisphere at the school’s Social Studies and Art Fair on March 25. The wellattended event celebrated what they have learned in social studies over the past year, showcasing creative
student artwork and 150 different projects that represented the United States, Canada and Latin American countries, indigenous people in this region of the world and famous people in history. “Our students engaged in meaningful conversations with parents and friends about the
research they did and the information they gained,” said Principal Deborah Smith. “Conversations on the geography, economics, governments and cultural diversity of the regions were heard throughout the gym and cafeteria where the projects were displayed.”

Although BACA Members have witnessed how well their process works for many years, no one needs to take their word for it any longer because a four year independent study by professionals in the field, recently revealed that BACA children achieve “statistically significant improvements” in all behavioral and emotional categories. This greatly contributes to expediting the overall healing of the child on many levels, so their fear is quickly replaced with confidence. This conclusive study was published in the International Journal of “Evaluation and Program Planning” and can be found in its entirety on the BACA website. To date, their success with abused children has enabled BACA to spread to 17 countries, 47 states and thousands of members. If you are interested in becoming a BACA member you must meet certain requirements. Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a Cleared Supporter, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member. Bikers Against Child Abuse is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. BACA formed with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. They exist as a body of bikers to empower children not to feel afraid of the world in which they live. They stand ready to lend support to their wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization. BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location. Following this visit, two BACA members are assigned as “Primaries” to the child who remain available for contact 24/7/365. A ride is then organized for the members of the Chapter to meet the child. This is when a ceremony is performed to take the child into the BACA family, which is where the empowerment begins. BACA supports each child according to their individual needs. Some services available for the child and their family include a physical presence at the home (24/7 if needed), visiting the child at school, escorting the child to and from court, and they even maintain a therapy fund for children needing assistance. The members of BACA are all volunteers that do not receive payment of any kind, and they also pay for all their own expenses. They will tell you their payment is far more significant than money. Their payment is seeing first hand how their involvement empowers children and contributes to their

“Miss Saigon” Standing Ovation In East Islip, recordbreaking numbers of tickets were sold for this year’s high school musical, “Miss Saigon,” directed by Bethany Affelt and performed on March 28, 29 and 30 at Rydzeski Hall. Set during the Vietnam conflict, the Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil creation was nominated for an impressive number of Olivier, Tony and Drama Desk awards. East Islip’s dedicated stage crew worked tirelessly to build and
maneuver a stunning set that incorporated multiple staircases, twostory buildings and a giant “Lady Liberty” crown, and the school’s pit orchestra musicians played continuously throughout, as the production featured no spoken dialogue. The talented cast included Tori Tiernan as Kim, Luke Ferrari as Chris, Kieran Tohill as the Engineer, Andrew Timmins as John, Karina Gallagher as Ellen, Kevin Coles as Thuy and Alex Bertolini as Gigi.
“We are incredibly proud of this year’s production,” said Affelt. “The talent featured on stage was of Broadway caliber and the audience was brought to tears by the leading actors’ beautifully emotive performances. The students and advisers all worked so hard on this extremely challenging production, and their efforts were acknowledged each night by an instantaneous standing ovation as soon as the stage lights were brought up for the curtain call.”

Students at Islip’s Wing Elementary School wrapped up Autism Awareness Week with an April 5 parade around the building, promoting inclusion and selfdetermination for all.
During the days prior, each student participated in activities revolving around the awareness and acceptance of all students, guided by teacher Nicole Howley and school psychologist Nancy
Sferrazza. The building was filled both inside and outside with symbols showing support during Autism Awareness Month.

Dance Inspires Inclusion Dance Connection of Islip became a member studio of a new program, Wingman for Dance, to continue their efforts to foster a positive, supportive, and inspirational atmosphere in their studio. The program is led by Miss Jenn D’Auria, and student leaders Allison Bradley, Taylor Capozzoli, Emily Civitella, Melissa Kinnear, Ginger Mastrosimone, and Lilly Scholl who lead their Competition and Performance teams in activities that help each dancer to recognize what makes them unique and special, and build their confidence. The goal is to “inspire dancers to become
helpful heroes that go above and beyond for each other.” “The wingman program is a great addition to our dance studio and I am honored to be our studio mentor. The Wingman program brings team bonding as well as self reflection, it inspires dancers to go above and beyond to help each other”, Jennifer D’Auria, Wingman Mentor, Dance Connection Teacher. Wingman for Dance is part of Dylan’s Wings of Change, a foundation dedicated to the memory of Dylan Hockley, who was killed in the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary
in 2012. Dylan’s parents created the foundation to “foster acceptance, inclusion, and empathy for all children.” Founded in September 1989, Dance Connection is an Islip based company whose mission is to create a welcoming and fun setting for proper performing arts education. NADCA sets the industry
standard for HVAC system cleaning and its members must have at least one certified Air Systems Cleaning Specialist (ASCS) on staff, comply with a Code of Ethics and acquire continuing education credits.
