dedication to the study of Spanish and her excellent skills in that language. Valued at over $3,000, the award is given to only 24 students from more than 2,400 SHH chapters across the United States. In July, Guadalupe will travel to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands with the other 23 winners. “I would like to thank La Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica for this amazing opportunity to travel to Ecuador,” said Gomez. “I would also like to thank Mrs. Maisano for encouraging, motivating and helping me with the scholarship process. I am looking forward to experiencing the Ecuadorian culture and learning about the country.” Marconi, a senior, won the 2018 Joseph Adams Senior Scholarship, a $1,000 scholarship awarded to only 60 students from more than 2,400 national SHH chapters. “I am so incredibly proud to have received this award,” said Marconi. “I humbly thank La Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica for its generosity, as well as Karen Maisano for all her continuous support and guidance.” Students become eligible for these two awards by being an inducted member of the SHH and then submitting samples of their written and oral work in Spanish to a selection committee appointed by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

Recognized for their dedication to the study of Spanish and excellent skills in that language, the two students were presented

One station even imitated the body’s actual circulatory system in delivering oxygen to the muscles and bringing carbon dioxide back to the heart and lungs. Students also learned about the anatomy and function of the heart, lungs and circulatory

system through viewing posters as visual aids and watching videos on the school’s Smart Board. “Many students found these body systems to be fascinating and participated in the healthy heart stations with enthusiasm,” said Wahrenburg. “Healthy hearts are happy hearts.”

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. with Jamie Lynn Ryan Just last weekend, I was able to satisfy my urge for a little springtime strolling in the city when the opportunity arose to accompany a friend from college to several New York Bridal Fashion Week runway shows. While I was initially far more interested in the aimless wandering aspect of the day, I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the experience of attending these avant-garde displays. Never having heard of the featured designers prior to seeing their latest collections in person, they proved to be quite impressive. Sure, I could have done without the crowns of ﬂowers as accent, and I’m fairly certain I will not be accessorizing any future bridal gowns with high-top sneakers; but, quirks aside, some of the styles were quite stunning when viewed more as works of art rather than practical fashion. At the close of one of the shows, the audience was caught

It was during an ill-fated “selfie” attempt in front of the Flatiron Building that a kind woman took pity on us and offered to take the photo, saying, “I know it’s probably taboo to walk up to random strangers and volunteer to take their picture, but you two seemed like you could use a little help.” Why yes, we could indeed. In all, it was a day short on the sort of haphazard adventure which has become the norm with most New York City day trips I have ventured on; actually, quite seamless. It’s funny, the tendency to almost miss the chaos when things go according to plan. I’ll have to remind myself of that irony the next time I’m traipsing 50 blocks out of the way to make a reservation at the third restaurant on the list, while carrying my shoes.

100 YEARS YOUNG - Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter celebrated with Islip Town resident Nancy Walter, as she marked her 100th birthday at Bristal Assisted Living in Sayville recently. Nancy was born in 1918, and married her husband on New Year’s Day, after he returned from World War II. According to friends, Nancy is an inspiration of joy to all who know her. She shared her birthday with Bristal residents and family. The celebration included a birthday cake, balloons and gifts. Islip Supervisor Carpenter presented Nancy with a Citation of Recognition for her special centenarian birthday milestone.

in the East Islip School District. For this year’s event, all secondary math teachers were given Pi superhero T-shirts as a gift from Math and Science Director

Janet Jones, and students learned about the meaning of Pi and challenged each other to recite many digits of this irrational number.

The Art League of Long Island is pleased to host the Long Island Center of Photography’s Members Exhibition in the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery May 5th through May 20th. Artists were asked what they would exhibit if given 60 inches of wall space in the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery in Dix Hills. Twentythree members responded with their highly creative skills and put together a photographic exhibit that

will inspire and provoke thought in all patrons that view their work. The LICP, founded in 1996, enjoys a reputation as a singular photographic organization dedicated to fine art image-making. Compassion for Pets Islip High School business students recently collected pet food and animal care products for donation to Legislator Steven Flotteron’s Long Island Cares pet food drive. “In addition to teaching students about

business and careers, social responsibility is consistently taught throughout our business courses,” said teacher Renee Clock. “We take pride in knowing that our students give to others, whether it’s humans

or animals. Teaching compassion and empathy, and leading by example, is incorporated into each of our classes. I’m very proud to teach students who help give back to our community.”
