Some Beneﬁts of Growing Older

Seniors are a rapidly growing segment of the population. In the United States, the Administration on Aging states that the older population — persons 65 years or older — numbered 46.2 million in 2014 (the latest year for which data is available). Statistics Canada reports that, in July 2015, estimates indicated that there were more persons aged 65 years and older in Canada than children aged 0 to 14 years for the ﬁrst time in the country’s history. Nearly one in six Canadians (16.1%) was at least 65 years old. With so many people living longer, it’s time to

celebrate the perks of getting older rather than the drawbacks. Here are some great beneﬁts to growing old. • Higher self-esteem: The insecurities of youth give way as one ages, and older people have less negativity and higher self-esteem. A University of Basel study of people ranging in ages from 18 to 89 found that regardless of demographic and social status, the older one gets the higher self-esteem climbs. Qualities like selfcontrol and altruism can contribute to happiness. • Financial perks: Seniors are entitled to discounts on meals, museum entry fees, movies, and other entertainment if they’re willing to disclose their age. Discounts are available through an array of venues if one speaks up. Seniors also can enjoy travel perks, with slashed prices on resorts, plane

tickets and more. The U.S. National Park Service offers citizens age 62 and older lifetime passes to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites for just $10 in person ($20 online or via mail). • Reasoning and problem-solving skills: Brain scans reveal that older adults are more likely to use both hemispheres of their brains simultaneously — something called bilateralization. This can sharpen reasoning skills. For example, in a University of Illinois study, older air trafﬁc controllers excelled at their cognitively taxing jobs, despite some losses in shortterm memory and visual spatial processing. Older controllers proved to

be experts at navigating, juggling multiple aircrafts simultaneously and avoiding collisions. • Less stress: As people grow older, they are able to differentiate their needs from wants and focus on

more important goals. This can alleviate worry over things that are beyond one’s control. Seniors may realize how little the opinions of others truly mean in the larger picture, thereby feeling less stress about what others think of

them. Growing older may involve gray hair or wrinkling skin, but there are many positive things associated with aging.

Effects of Snoring Including Alzheimer’s

The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, the NSF says anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may also contribute to snoring. Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse. While many people may think snoring is a mere nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. Over time, apnea can be

associated with high blood pressure and increased risks of heart attack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well. A new study published in the Journal of Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders. Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12

years earlier on average than those who didn’t report any sleep-related breathing issues. Mild cognitive impairment often precedes dementia related

to Alzheimer’s disease. Some researchers believe snoring and sleep apnea may contribute to a buildup of the toxic protein in the brain called

beta-amyloid, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. If snoring has become problematic, men are

urged to visit a doctor or sleep specialist to see which therapies can be instituted to help improve sleep and overall health.

Snoring may seem like a pesky yet minor problem, but it can be much more serious than some people know. Although snoring is a common problem among all ages and genders, the National Sleep Foundation says that men are twice as likely to snore as women, and snoring can worsen with age.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have successfully rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters! Also, aside from collecting trash they also have had an amazing impact on the amount of sewage being dumped in our bays. To reduce the flow of trash into our bays, they have collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. works diligently to partner with industry businesses, non-profits, government agencies and academic institution’s striving to promote comprehensive understanding of local water quality issues, through hands-on training, identification and problem solving. Last week I featured some boat cleaning tips that I received from Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. and this week I would like

to mention an important issue that I learned more about from their President. This topic is the common act of releasing balloons into the air. Balloons are a type of marine debris that many people don’t tend to think about. Balloons are frequently accidentally or even intentionally released into the environment and once they go up, they must also come down. A very sad reality is that many times balloons are found in the stomachs of dead marine mammals. Balloons and their ribbons are in the top 5 items of marine debris found on beach cleanups, and Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. volunteers have removed 6,179 balloons from our South Shore Bays and Beaches over the last 4 years. Additionally, the following volunteer positions are currently still available: Boat Crew Members and Boat Maintenance and Repair Members. Together we can continue to better our waterways and shorelines, making them more clean and safe, which will make Long Island an even better place to live!

College Conference Islip High School students in Renee Clock’s career development work experience class recently attended the “Laying the Foundation: Preparation for College and Vocational Training Success” conference at Suffolk County Community College’s Grant Campus. The day included interactive workshops, facility tours, resource identification and demonstrations of vocational training programs for students. The event focused on identifying services, tools,

Exercise and Aging: Workout Safely After 50 In an ideal world, people young and old exercise each day. But as men and women age, ﬁnding time to work out is not so easy. Commitments to work and family often take precedence over daily exercise. As a result, many people 50 and over

might not have exercised regularly or at all in many years. But as children grow up or even move out, people facing down their golden years are often compelled to get back in the gym. That’s a wise decision that can increase a person’s chances of being healthy and happy in retirement. But before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women over 50 should take heed of the following safety tips to ensure their efforts are not derailed by accident or injury. • Speak with your physician. The National Institute on Aging notes that even people with chronic

conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis can be physically active. However, anyone with such a condition and even those who don’t fall into those categories should consult with their physicians and receive a full physical before exercising. Such a consultation and checkup can shed light on any unknown issues, and physicians can offer advice on how to safely manage any problems that may arise. • Begin with low-intensity exercises. Even if you feel great and have maintained a healthy weight, don’t push yourself too hard at the start. Your body needs time to adjust to physical activity, so choose lowintensity exercises like walking and light strength training so your muscles, tendons and ligaments can adjust. Initially, exercise every other day so your body has ample time to recover between workouts.

• Choose the right places to exercise outdoors. Exercising outside provides the best of both worlds for many people, providing a chance to get healthy all while enjoying the great outdoors. When exercising outdoors, choose areas that are not remote and where others can see you and offer help if you suffer an injury or have an accident. Boardwalks, public parks and outdoor gyms are safer places to work out than wooded areas or other places well off the beaten path. • Stay hydrated. The NIA

notes that many people lose their sense of thirst as they age. But just because you aren’t thirsty does not mean you don’t need water, especially while exercising. Water regulates body temperature and lubricates the joints, thereby decreasing your risk of

injury during exercise. Exercising after 50 can help people live healthy well into retirement. But caution must be exercised when aging men and women return to exercise after a long break.

Challenging Math Tournament Five students in East Islip Middle School’s Math League – Muhammad Abdullah, Rachel Furey, Krina Patel, Khushnood Rahim and Marisa Triolo – participated in a math tournament at North Shore Middle School in Glen Cove on April 5, competing in a series of

Enhancing Leadership Skills The Islip School District’s teachers, staff and administrators – joined by board of education trustees Paul Austin and Matthew Clareen – flocked to the high school auditorium on March 18 for an exciting Superintendent’s Conference Day interactive assembly with motivational speaker Gary McGuey, author of “The Inspirational Teacher” and “The Mentor: Leadership Trumps Bullying.” McGuey, a former athletic director and educator and one of the most in-demand educational speakers in the nation, provided the attendees with engaging

personal and professional development as well as enhanced principlecentered leadership skills. “Today we are coming together to be introduced to ideas and concepts that will not only help our students, but give each of us insight into ourselves,” said Dr. Christopher Smalley, the district’s assistant superintendent, introducing McGuey. “We know that academics are important, and if our students are not prepared to succeed in a college or career, they will struggle. But we also know that if our students are not prepared to deal with adversity

or all the soft skills necessary in life, they will struggle even more. Our students now deal with an incredible bombardment of digital information, busy schedules and the constant pressure to succeed. The good news for our students is that they are in Islip, and we all care.” McGuey delved deeply into the ideas behind “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” explained the three types of power – positional, utilitarian and principlecentered leadership – and demonstrated the path from dependence to independence and finally to interdependence.

“The only person we change is ourselves,” McGuey said. “We can influence people, and that’s what leadership is. People follow our footsteps much quicker than our advice.

Everybody in this room can think of that influence or role model, that person in our lives we’ll never forget. For some of us, that person is no longer alive, but they still have power

over us because of the way they led their lives based on words like integrity, hard work, love, service and responsibility.”
