TESSITORE SIGNS FOR UTICA FOOTBALL - East Islip High School senior Carson Tessitore signed a national letter of intent on March 28 to play football for Utica University, where he plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in health studies leading to a doctor of physical therapy degree. Playing center and defensive tackle, Tessitore earned All-State and All-County honors as well as being named Long Island High School Football Championship Defensive MVP and one of the National Football Foundation’s Golden Eleven. The East Islip SchoolBusiness Partnership held its inaugural STEAM Day in the district’s Early Childhood Center on April 8, attended by hundreds of second and fourth grade students and facilitated by middle and high school students. “STEAM Day was designed to give second and fourth grade students an experience that facilitated an interest into the study and possible careers in science, technology, engineering, art and
mathematics,” SchoolBusiness Partnership Coordinator Bridgette Lopiccolo said. Students attended the event with their classroom teachers and explored robotics, played with art and technology manipulatives, tried their hands at building towers, learned about refraction through photography, watched a drone fly through the ECC, and so much more. East Islip High School Robotics Club President

Zoe Elder assisted with the event as a facilitator. “It’s important that the students attend this kind of event,” Elder said. “I got into STEAM because of an event like this when I was younger.” After the students explored the available stations, they gathered to watch two short STEAM videos. There was also a main event, a robotics contest between two teams for all to witness and to pique the interests of the students even further.

The Islip School District held its annual ENL Family Cultural Night on March 24, celebrating the district’s ENL students and its vibrant multicultural community. The event began with students and their families gathering in the Islip High School auditorium. “I’m happy to be part of a community that embraces our diversity, is inclusive, values the contributions and insights of all families, and I’m happy to say, is getting better each and every day,” Superintendent Dr. Dennis O’Hara said in his welcoming address. Senior Anthony Lopez, the Class of 2022’s salutatorian, also spoke, telling the inspiring story of how diligent reading greatly enhanced his English language skills. In one of the evening’s highlights, the exceptional achievements of one English language learner from each of the district’s schools were recognized. This year’s honorees were Muhammad Mahmud of

Mock Trial Team Finishes In Top Four In County Tournament East Islip High School competed in the annual Suffolk County Bar Association Mock Trial Tournament from Feb. 2 through March 23, finishing in the top four out of 30 schools. The case was a criminal matter involving securities fraud. Students met with social studies teacher and mock trial coach Patsy Lester several days a week after school as well as Saturday
mornings to prepare for the tournament. They also received professional coaching from attorney Brian Mitchell, who has been working with the team alongside Lester for 22 years. The team took turns as both prosecution and defense, going undefeated against St. Anthony’s, Deer Park, Sachem, Newfield, St. John’s and John Glenn before falling to Huntington by one point in the county semifinals.
The semifinal round was argued in District Court before Judge Eric Sachs, who commended East Islip’s mastery of the case and their professionalism in the courtroom. “I’m so proud of the way this team bonded and worked together through a very tough competition,” Lester said. “They inspire me with their dedication and team spirit.”

In 2021, the U.S. Surgeon General issued an advisory to highlight the urgent need to address the mental health crisis among youth. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, up to 1 in 5 children ages 3 to 17 years old experienced mental health challenges. In an effort to address this public health concern and spark conversations about mental health among high schoolers, the National Institutes of Health invites students ages 16 to 18 years old to participate in the “2022 Speaking Up About Mental Health!” essay contest. Essays should explore ways that individuals or society can address or eliminate mental health stigma that young people may face when seeking mental health treatment. The contest, supported by
