Essential Staff Providing Care For Animals On Campus Amid Coronavirus (Covid19) Pandemic
Parents need to communicate with children about their digital reputations and to keep checking Internet activity. The American School Counselor Association and iKeepSafe.org have posted a number of resources for families at iKeep Safe.org/ reputation.
North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Center is currently conducting adoption by appointment only. Our Adoption Team is contacting pre-approved adopters with a scheduled day and time to complete their adoption. The health and wellbeing of NSALA staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community remains our priority at this time. We currently have over 40 dogs of various ages and sizes on campus, as well as more than 100 felines, from kittens to older cats, all looking for loving homes. As always, the animals on the NSALA Port Washington campus are being well-cared for by our devoted staff. In addition to finding homes for more than 110 canines, some of whom were from our recent Mill Dog rescue (we saved 100 dogs and puppies from deplorable
conditions with some going to our area shelter partners,) we have also placed more than 30 animals into foster homes. During this time, the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center will remain open to see sick patients and emergency cases only. While we are doing adoptions by appointment, NSALA’s Adoption Center is temporarily closed to the general public in accordance with New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s statewide directives and to control the number of people in the Adoption Center at any one time. How Does The New Coronavirus Affect You And Your Pets?
Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19. This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak. To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even

Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet). Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Take steps to protect yourself Clean your hands often Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Avoid close contact Avoid close contact with people who are sick Put distance between yourself and other people if COVID-19 is spreading in your community. This is especially important for people who are at higher risk of getting very sick. Take steps to protect others Stay home if you’re sick Stay home if you are sick, except to get medical care. Local Scouts Participate at NYS Assembly in Albany Suffolk County Council (BSA)’s representatives participated at the annual New York State of the State in Albany on February 24, 2020. The youth members and their adult volunteer leaders of the Scouts BSA Troops participated in this event and were given a tour of the NYS Capitol. The scouts presented the legislature with an update on how well scouting is serving the Suffolk County community and each of the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Explorers had a chance to speak to the NYS representatives as they shared this information. The 19 youth members and their ten adult Scouting leaders (among others scouts from NY State) had a lunch in the Legislative Building and took a photo with Senator Martinez following a tour of the Capitol Building. The Scouts and Adult leaders listened to New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, as well as Senator John Flanagan and Senator Monica Martinez speak about their support for the Scouting
movement and the impact that Scouting has had on their various jurisdictions over the years. During the ceremonies at the NYS Assembly, the scouts were recognized when they presented the State of the Boy Scouts in Suffolk County Council (BSA). They presented on the state of Scouting in all of New York - youth members served, community hours given, and projects completed for community organizations. In addition, youth heard from leaders about the importance of of community service and how being actively involved will serve them throughout their lives. Youth had a chance to meet and greet and take photos with various leaders. Explained Eagle Scout Michael VanLoon of Troop 125 (Commack), “I did not speak to the assembly, but the people that did get the opportunity to speak spoke about the opportunities that Scouting has provided them, such as camping and developing citizenship in a way that many of their peers had never been able
to experience. Additionally, one young lady that spoke was able to do the same activities that her brother had been able to do through his own troop, once Scouting had recently opened up to girls across the country.” The teens included members of the Girlonly and Boy-only Scout Troops, Cub Scout Packs, and the Middle Island Fire Department’s Co-Ed Explorer Post 9515. In addition to the presentation to the State Legislature, Eagle Scout Aiden Donnelly of Troop 362 (Centereach) was presented with the Silver Badge Hornaday Award. Eagle Scout Michael VanLoon of Troop 125 (Commack), representing the Order of the Arrow (the National BSA Honor Society), additionally said “It’s great to see that our state officials continue to show their support for Scouting as we keep the Scouting program alive and strong in Suffolk County.”

For the 18th consecutive year, East Islip High School’s Mock Trial team qualified for the Suffolk County playoffs after going undefeated in the regular season and finishing in second place. East Islip won the

Passover is a celebration of the liberation of Jews from Egyptian slavery. Along with Sukkot and Shavuot, Passover is one of the Three Pilgrimage Festivals that feature agricultural offerings and several unique mitzvot. The seder, an elaborate meal that customarily takes place on the first night of the holiday, is
at the center of Passover celebrations. At The Last Supper, Jesus identified the matzo (bread) and wine as his body and blood, soon to be sacrificed and shed. Christians believe The Last Supper marked the first transubstantiation, or the turning of bread and wine into the actual substance of Christ’s body and blood. This also was the first celebration of the Eucharist and Holy Mass that would become another core component of the Christian faith. Easter is a time of great celebration that is preceded by Lent, a weeklong period of reflection, prayer and
repentance. The days immediately prior to Easter are commonly referred to as Holy Week. This encompasses Palm Sunday and lasts through Holy Thursday (the day of The Last Supper), Good Friday (when Jesus was crucified and placed in the tomb), and Holy Saturday (the 40-hour-long vigil that the followers of Jesus Christ held after his death and burial). On Easter Sunday, four women, including Mary Magdalene, went to Christ’s tomb to anoint his body with spices and oils. They found the tomb was empty and were met with an angel who told them that Jesus had been raised from the dead. A biblical account in John 20:14-16 indicates that Mary Magdalene was the first to speak with the risen Jesus. She mistakes Jesus for a gardener and says to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him, “Rabboni!” In regard to his apostles Simon and Peter who were the first to see the risen Christ. Easter is a time of joy and celebration, and a great opportunity for Christians to immerse themselves in their faith.

To the casual observer, Passover and Easter may not seem to have much in common. While the two holidays are celebrated by people of different faiths, they share certain similarities. Both Passover and Easter celebrate fundamental tenets of their respective faiths. Make Jewish Cuisine Part of Your Passover Celebration Passover is a Jewish festival that commemorates the story of Exodus. In that story, ancient Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt, and men, women and children of Jewish heritage celebrated that liberation during Passover, a seven or eight day festival that is one of the more widely observed Jewish holidays. Passover celebrations begin on the 15th day of the Jewish month of Nisan. That day typically falls in March or April of the Gregorian calendar. One of the symbols of Passover is matzo, an unleavened flatbread made from flour and water. Though matzo is an enduring symbol of Passover, that does not mean it cannot be enjoyed at other times of the year. In fact, those who want to celebrate their Jewish heritage or even those who simply want to experience Jewish culture can enjoy matzo throughout the year. It’s even possible to get a little creative with matzo. Such is the case with the following recipe for “Chicken With Matzo Dumplings” from Michael van Straten’s “The Healthy Jewish Cookbook” (Frog, Ltd.). This delicious recipe can be a part of your Passover celebration or just a meal to sit down and enjoy with family and friends.
Chicken With Matzo Dumplings Serves 4-6
For the broth: 1 leftover chicken carcass, all skin and fat removed 2 Spanish onions, 1 whole and unpeeled, the other peeled and chopped 1 leek, coarsely chopped 3 celery stalks, with leaves if possible, coarsely chopped 4 bay leaves
Chicken With Matzo Dumplings - This delicious recipe for “Chicken With Matzo Dumplings” can be enjoyed during Passover or throughout the year. 1 2 1 4 12

Note: You can use goodquality, low-salt kosher chicken stock cubes or bouillon powder, but the recipe above for homemade broth is recommended. For the dumplings: 7 ounces medium matzo meal (about 8 matzo sheets, ground up) 3 eggs 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon finely chopped flat-leaf parsley 3 grindings of black pepper 2 pinches of salt First, make the broth. Put the carcass in a large pot and cover with about 21⁄2 quarts of water. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Add the vegetables, herbs and peppercorns, return to a boil, cover and simmer for 1 hour. Strain, reserving the broth. Make the dumplings by
mixing all the dumpling ingredients together, then knead until you have a smooth dough, adding a little water if necessary. Cover and let rest for at least 3 hours. Using your hands, form the mixture into balls the size of apricots. To put it all together, bring the chicken broth up to simmering point. Drop in the dumplings and continue simmering, covered, for 30 minutes. If you don’t have a chicken carcass, boil a whole chicken for the soup and use the meat in other dishes. Traditionally, a boiling fowl from a kosher butcher would be used. Health note: This is the famous “Jewish penicillin” beloved of every mother and grandmother. It’s not an old wives’ tale; there’s good scientific evidence that it contains vitamins, minerals and other natural chemicals that are antibacterial and immune-boosting. In addition, nutrients and valuable plant chemicals are extracted from the vegetables and herbs during the cooking process, most of which end up as active ingredients in the finished soup.

A MEMO FROM THE DIRECTOR TO OUR PATIENTS AND PROSPECTIVE PATIENTS We are all aware of the dangers of the Corona virus. We at Long Island Hearing would like to share with you what we are doing to protect our patients and staff. We have always practiced and took extra effort in protecting everyone who enters our facilities. A number of weeks ago we stepped up our effort in sanitizing our waiting room multiple times during the day. Our consultation rooms are sanitized between each patient. Now in current time, we have elevated our sanitizing yet to a higher and finer level. Door knobs, arm chairs, clip boards and yes pens are being sanitized for your and our protection. Additionally, we have altered our scheduling of patients so that no more than three (3) patients will be in the waiting room together. We Promise and Guarantee It. Also, for those who might be health compromised, or are just not comfortable being in space other than your home, we now offer basic service and cleanings of hearing instruments as a drive up service. Advance Care Plans The United States population is rapidly aging. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), by 2030, the number of Americans aged 65 and older will more than double to 71 million older Americans, comprising
roughly 20 percent of the U.S. population. With age comes the added burden of dealing with illnesses such as heart failure, dementia and cancer, any one of which can leave you unable to make decisions involving

If surfaces are dirty, clean them: Use detergent or soap and water prior to disinfection.

This recipe for “Grilled Rosemary Lamb Chops” from Peggy Knickerbocker’s “Simple Soirées: Seasonal Menus for Sensational Dinner Parties” (Stewart, Tabori & Chang) gives Easter dinner hosts the opportunity to prepare the meal over an open flame, adding
