Stars of Tomorrow Benefit Sunday February 24th the Dance Connection Competition Team performed for a packed theater at the Concert Hall at the State University of New York’s Purchase College in Purchase, NY to raise funds for Dancers Responding to AIDS. The team had raised money through ticket sales, online fundraising and put together a themed basket for the annual cocktail reception and auction. Before performing, they were able to participate in a musical theatre dance workshop with renowned choreographer Billy Griffin whose credits include the Broadway and first national tour of Mary Poppins, Young Frankenstein, and White Christmas, and later on in the evening they took to the stage to perform their numbers “Beauty and the Beast” and “Hard Knock Life”. How Do I Top That? After my last column expressing how much my late friend Brenna meant to me, I received an outpouring, not just from regular readers, but from Brenna’s family and friends, letting me know that the column I wrote about her touched them tremendously. Now, how do I top that? Have you ever felt that way? You deliver a tour de force, whatever that may be in your life or career, and now you are left with tackling your next act, only to think, “How do I top that?” Perhaps we are not meant to compete with our last great feat, but rather to integrate it into the intricate tapestry of who we are, and trust in what comes forth from there. Generally speaking, with an accomplishment of any kind, comes an unspoken promise of more and better accomplishments to come. Expectations rise and, with it, so does anxiety and selfconsciousness in its most literal term; an acute consciousness of the self. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard people

confess in their most candid moments that they are afraid of being exposed as a fraud, a sham, an imposter in their own life. I hear it from friends all the time. It all comes down to, “What do I do for my next trick?” I remember a magazine interview that actress Michelle Pfeiffer gave many years back, in which she confessed that every time she stepped onto a new movie set, she was convinced that would be the time she would finally be exposed as a bad actress and she would be fired on the spot. It’s funny, but these very human feelings can even extend to something as simple as planning your child’s birthday party. How do you top last year’s birthday party? Or will it even be on par with last year’s party? Will the apple pie you made at last year’s family gathering meet everyone’s expectations this year? Maybe you just signed a new client, and you’re wondering if your work will live up to their expectations? So, how do we defuse this common human ailment of the fear of living up to our own

expectations, and the expectations of others? Self-judgement is born in the mind. Turn down the volume of the mind and turn up the volume of the heart. The gut should always run interference. Some of what I write may be pure platinum, while other entries are gold, silver or even rust, depending on who you ask. I’ve certainly gotten a few rusty emails over these months. I’ve also gotten emails of appreciation and gratitude that have touched me deeply. One thing I will always serve up is my truth. That I know I can deliver every time, without exception. Having the courage to say, “This is who I am, and this is how I feel,” is the antidote to, “How do I top that?” syndrome. The next time you’re about to give your next presentation, create your next piece of art, cook your next meal, plan your next party or draw up your next big plans, if it feels right and it feels real, and it resonates with your heart and your gut, it’s a meaningful and worthy pursuit. How it will be received by others is anyone’s guess.

The East Islip Chamber of Commerce recently recognized three East Islip fifth-graders – Jason Engel of John F. Kennedy Elementary School and Krista Deutsch and Grace Micali of Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School – as February Students of the Month, chosen for their outstanding community service and participation in school activities. Engel has been an important member of the John F. Kennedy Student Council, where he actively participates and demonstrates exceptional citizenship qualities. “Jason always comes into my classroom every morning with a smile on his face,” said John F. Kennedy teacher

Danielle Chiapetta. “He is respectful, responsible and always ready to work. Jason is a natural leader as well as a natural helper who sets a positive example for his classmates and peers daily. He is an absolute pleasure to have in class.” Both Deutsch and Micali are active members of Ruth C. Kinney’s Student Council, and both are gifted athletes. Deutsch plays for the U-12 Clarkstown Elite girls soccer team and earned an invitation to compete in Barcelona, Spain, this year in the biggest children’s international soccer tournament in the world. Micali recorded the best long jump for her age group and received the 2018 USA Track & Field

Long Island’s Athlete of the Year award. “Krista is an exceptional student who is always there to help her classmates,” said Ruth C. Kinney Principal Janet Jones. “She is a wonderful person and always puts forth her best effort in the classroom. Her teachers are all very proud of her. “Grace is an excellent student and exhibits high achievement in all subject areas,” Jones said. “She always comes to school prepared for her classroom exams, and never misses a homework assignment. She is a world-class role model for her peers and is always involved in schoolrelated activities.”

Collegiate Soccer Recruit signed a national letter of intent on March 7 to play soccer at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford this fall. She was congratulated at the ceremony by her family and Athletic Director Stephen Restivo. Campson, who plays defense, chose University of Pittsburgh after an invitation from the college’s soccer coach. She began playing soccer at East Islip High School the age of 4 and went on senior Brianna Campson to earn 10 varsity letters

by the end of her senior year as well as eight High Minds in Motion awards. As a track athlete, she was named All-League and was a key member of the 20152016 undefeated leaguechampion spring track team. East Islip High School senior Ryan Conway signed a national letter of intent on March 1 to play soccer at Union College in Schenectady this fall. She was congratulated at the ceremony by her family and Athletic Director Stephen Restivo. An exceptional athlete, Conway earned All-State, All-Long Island and AllCounty honors, as well as Division II Player of the Year and Minds in Motion awards. Birthday Wishes is an organization whose mission is to provide birthday parties to children experiencing homelessness. There are unforunatelty 2,000 homeless children right here on Long Island, but thankfully Birthday Wishes works with 80 shelters/ transitional housing programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties to give more than 120 children a birthday celebration each month!

In preparation for Easter, the Walt Whitman Shops is offering an opportunity for local children to have fun and give back to charity during their annual Easter Egg Hunt. This event will take place on Sunday April 14th at 9am. Tickets are $5 per child and all proceeds will be donated to Birthday Wishes of Long Island. Over 10,000 eggs and toys will be spread out in a section of the mall for kids to find. Also, you can meet the Easter Bunny there as well!

Birthday Wishes relies heavily on donations of toys from generous donors like you to throw a birthday party, they are always looking for more of these donations. As teens are their fastest growing demographic that they serve, they are always in need of teen gifts. They are currently looking for gifts for children of the ages 14-19. They love to throw birthday parties for the children they serve, which reflects a birthday party that would be thrown for any child anywhere. Get Ready: Early Spring Landscaping Tips D uring the cold months of winter, many people stare longingly out of their window dreaming of spring and time spent outdoors. For those with green thumbs, images of tending to the garden and other aspects of their landscapes, no doubt, dominate such daydreams. Draw inspiration from those budding crocuses and daffodils pushing through the last remnants of snow and employ these tips to prepare for the upcoming gardening season.

One of the ﬁrst steps is to apply a pre-emergent weed killer to get a head start in knocking out weeds that can plague the lawn during the growing season. Killing weeds at the roots early on can mean far fewer hassles in spring and summer, and may prevent new generations of weeds from cropping up each year.

Lawn and garden experts at The Home Depot suggest ﬁlling in bare patches of lawn now by mixing a few shovelfuls of soil with grass seed. Then apply this patch to the bare areas, water it, and continue to care for the entire area until the spot ﬁlls in. Spend a day in the garage or shed tending to the lawn mower and other gardening equipment. Clean all of your tools and ensure that everything works, repairing parts as needed. Give outdoor entertaining spaces a good scrubbing, clearing away dirt and grime that may have accumulated over winter months. Use a leaf blower to blow away any leftover leaves. Check if your front porch, railings or decking need painting and/or staining. Tackle these projects when the weather is cooler

so everything will be ready for those peak spring days.
