Suffolk County Legislator Steven Flotteron collaborated with Catholic Health Good Samaritan Hospital and The Islip Arts Council in bringing local Veteran organizations together for an art exhibit and informational expo followed by a viewing of the acclaimed documentary Walk With Frank to increase awareness of mental health and our Veterans in the community. The event brought many community members and Veterans together, making the First Annual Veterans Awareness Project an overwhelmingly success.

So many Veterans face such issues as PTSD, mental illness, homelessness and ongoing recovery. The Veterans Awareness Project was possible with the help of sponsors such as, Catholic Health Good Samaritan Hospital, Islip Arts Council, Kerzner Contracting Corp., Bay Shore Lions, Francis Beringer, Legislators Cilmi and Flotteron and Ken Nevor. The art exhibit featured local Veteran artists and the documentary welcomed home Bay Shore native and Veteran Frank Romeo. Legislator Flotteron

SEBASTIAN REGIS MAKES STATE WRESTLING FINALS - East Islip High School sophomore Sebastian Regis became only the seventh East Islip wrestler – and the first sophomore in New York State history – to make the state finals. In the first round of the tournament, held at MVP Center in Albany from Feb. 25-26, 13th-seeded Regis defeated Middletown’s Rahmiere Bradley by a score of 6-2. He then beat Fox Lane’s Mark Berisha in round 2 and Lockport’s Stefaan Fearon in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Regis scored a major upset by knocking out top seed Konrad Krzyston of Frontier. In the contest for first place, Regis lost a hard-fought battle against Charlie Tibbitts of New Hartford/Saquoit Valley. The final match went to an overtime tiebreaker before Tibbits finally came out ahead, 3-2.

YES Community Counseling Center (YES CCC) is a local non-proﬁt organization with a mission to increase awareness about personal and community issues, prevent and treat substance abuse and to promote healthy families and a safe community. The United States Surgeon General issued an advisory in December 2021, Protecting Youth Mental Health, which spoke to the unprecedented challenges our nation’s children and families face, compounded by the pandemic. Without surprise, the report highlights the growing prevalence of young people experiencing mental health issues and acknowledges risk factors that became more present as a result of COVID-19. Responding to youth and families for the past 45 years and maintaining essential programs throughout the pandemic, YES Community Counseling Center is keenly aware of the growing needs and challenges referenced in the Surgeon General’s advisory. Some good news from the pandemic is that the public has recognized the need to support youth mental health and well-being. Educators supported their students in ways they had never imagined, schools and parents have recognized mental health is an essential part of overall health...mental health conditions are real, common and treatable. Youth experiencing mental health issues deserve support, compassion and care not stigma and shame. Research shows that the most important thing a child needs to be resilient is a stable committed relationship with a supportive adult. So what can parents do? Be a positive role model by taking care of your own mental and physical health. Show positive ways you deal with stress, refrain from unhealthy coping strategies, etc. Emotional Regulation. Practice techniques to manage emotions by ﬁrst

developing emotional intelligence within ourselves and our children. Taking the space between thoughts and behavior to identify feelings and how to effectively communicate those feelings, etc. Talk about the risk of alcohol and drugs. Children are exposed to positive images about alcohol at a very young age. Parents need to counteract those positive messages by communicating the negative impact of alcohol and other drugs in a youth’s developing brain. Look out for warning signs of distress and seek help when needed. Signs of distress include irritability, anger, withdrawal, changes in appearance, performance at school, sleeping or eating patterns. When you notice changes let your child know your concerns and be ready to support them. Seek professional help through your pediatrician if necessary. Manage youth time and activities online. Digital technology has promote both positive and negative experiences. Assess how your child feels after spending time online, etc. YES Community Counseling Center offers a variety of programs for children, teens and parents that support healthy development and strong families. East Islip Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society recently partnered with Blankets of Hope, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide blankets to homeless families. BOH provided 219 blankets to the NJHS, who then invited staff and students to help by writing letters of kindness to the

families. Guided by NJHS adviser Betty Muller, the letters were assembled along with the blankets and donated to two Long Island organizations that help homeless families, 30 to Mercy Haven in Islip Terrace and189 blankets to Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. In addition, BOH asked the school to continue this

act of kindness within the community and invited the students to join their 21day Kindness Challenge. “The NJHS appreciates all the help within the school community to support families in need, Muller said. “It is amazing what a community can achieve when we all work together.”

East Islip High School student-artists Lauren Holmes, Dom Nickson, Nick Winegard and Brianna Zinkiewicz were recently chosen for display at the 2022 Suffolk County Art Leaders Association’s All County and Senior Scholarship Art Showcase, with both Holmes and Nickson taking SCALA’s Best in Show awards. Nickson, a student in Elizabeth Gibbons’ sculpture class, won first place in the multimedia art category for his sculpture, while Holmes, a student in Daniel Figliozzi’s Advanced Placement art class as well as Heather Toomey’s digital imaging and design course, earned the top spot in the digital media category. Zinkiewicz, a student in Figliozzi’s AP art class, represented East Islip as the Senior Scholarship artist, with three of her works displayed. Winegard, who studies photography with Amarilis Singh, exhibited his darkroom prints. “I really feel honored to be a part of the show,” Nickson said. “It was a wonderful opportunity, and great seeing everyone else’s artwork.” “I am so thrilled that Dom won the Best in Show award,” Gibbons said. “He continues to impress me with his creative solutions, his artistic initiative and skill level. Dom brings a level of sophistication to the classroom environment that elevates not only his artwork, but his classmates as well.” “I was so surprised that my piece was entered and even more honored that it was chosen for the All County award,” Holmes said. “I am very passionate about digital art and design and am planning to pursue it in my future career.” “I am so proud of all of the student-artists exhibiting at SCALA this year,” Toomey said. “The students and art teachers

Club Meets Virtually With Service Members

At a recent Islip Middle School CARE Club meeting, the many positives that kindness and caring bring became clear when the club’s members linked virtually to meet and converse with several American service members. The connection began when middle school cheer coach Suzanne Lange made the CARE Club aware that her family sends care packages to her son, and Islip alumnus, Lt. Nicholas Lange of the U.S. Army. The students jumped at

the chance to let the troops know how much they are valued and asked to send care packages as well. Club members then created handmade cards of thanks and holiday cheer, crafted sparkly wooden snowflakes, packaged homemade chocolate treats, and collected donations of books, magazines, crossword puzzles, coloring books, candy, and snacks from middle school faculty. In February, the CARE Club members met with the service members face-
