This organization, despite their name, helps individuals with a wide range of disabilities. In fact, over 65 percent of those they serve today do not have cerebral palsy. They are equipped to serve those with Down Syndrome, Learning Disabilities, Mental Health Disorders, Autism, Epilepsy, Spina Bifida, Traumatic Brain Injury, Sensory Impairments, Chronic Physical/ Medical Conditions and Tourette Syndrome, among others.

To commemorate the league’s 100th season, the National Football League teamed up with DoSomething.org to invite fans, players, clubs and employees to join Huddle for 100, an effort to inspire a million people to volunteer 100 minutes of their time to make meaningful contributions to their communities. East Islip Middle School’s Leaders Club took on the challenge with a Huddle Against Hunger food drive for the homeless. “I often to look to DoSomething.org for inspiration for our club initiatives and fundraisers,” said club adviser Laura O’Donnell. “The website focuses on what our youth can do to be inspiring role

Islip High Schoolâ€™s two Virtual Enterprise International program teams recently participated in the annual Long Island Regional Business Plan and Trade Show at LIU Post, competing against 115 high school firms

across Long Island and bringing home two medals. The firms â€“ Fashion Cents, which offers monthly clothing subscriptions and premade clothing bundles, and Gifts to Go, which sells a variety of theme baskets â€“developed and presented a

business plan to a panel of judges. The students look forward to preparing and competing in the national business plan competition and trade show in April in New York City.

The Drama Club at East Islip’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School recently presented the memorable musical “Annie,” directed by third-grade teacher Dennis Clancy. Cast and crew dedicated many hours learning songs,

memorizing lines and creating the set. With more than 50 students participating in the Drama Club, two performances were necessary to accommodate all of the proud participants. In lieu of charging admission for attending,

donations were requested to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, earning a total of $450 for the charity. “Our students did an outstanding job making this endeavor a great success,” Clancy said.

Fun With Banana Dirt Pie

Kindergartners and first graders at Islip’s Wing Elementary School enjoyed creating Banana Dirt Pie during the most recent session of the school’s “Healthy Cooking with Ms. Arlene” program, an ongoing series of culinary lessons with chef Arlene Leggio.

“Cooking with Chef Arlene is a great way for students to create healthy meals, learn how to follow directions and to try new ingredients that they normally would not eat,” said Principal Michael Giacchetto. “Chef Arlene is always coming up with new creations like a quinoa

pie or a black bean dessert, and our students love the opportunity to cook and share these creations with their families. It is also great to have so many staff and community members come together to make these cooking projects successful.”
