wonder which traditions are authentically Irish and which ones were created by regions with an abundance of Irish emigrants. Surprisingly, many seemingly Irish traditions likely began elsewhere. First parade It would be accurate to assume that various elements associated with St. Patrick’s Day began where St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, once resided, including the first St. Patrick’s Day parade. However, some of the first parades held in St. Patrick’s honor took place in two North American cities, New York and Boston, that had high numbers of Irish immigrants, but historians say the first ever St. Patrick’s Day parade was actually held in St. Augustine, Florida in 1601, a year after gunfire blasts were used to honor the saint. The parade may have been at the request of an Irish priest living there at the time. Corned beef and cabbage What would St. Patrick’s Day be without an authentic meal of corned beef and cabbage? This dish is not so authentic after all, and actually is an American innovation. Ham and cabbage was widely eaten in Ireland, but corned beef was a cheaper alternative found in America by immigrants. Therefore, corned beef became a staple of poor Irish immigrants living in lower Manhattan. The salted meat was boiled three times to remove some of the brine and make it palatable. Green beer Green beer is not an Irish custom, but an American one. The most common beer consumed in Ireland is Guinness, which is dark brown to black in color, making

East Islip HS Tech Students Push The Robotics Envelope

East Islip High School’s robotics classes recently completed a multi-day tournament with their newly constructed VEX Swept Away game robots, guided by technology teacher James Connell. The student groups had six weeks to design, build and test their robots prior to the competition, which is designed to help introductory robotics students learn about competition robotics. This year presented some interesting challenges, as many of the students were part of the district’s hybrid model of instruction. This meant that they were only constructing their robots for half the week while studying and learning robotics theory – such as gear ratios, electronics and chassis design – for
the second half. Since the school has been utilizing Google Classroom for the entire year, the matches were recorded and posted on class Google streams with daily results so that students could rewatch, study and analyze their teams’ victories and losses. This proved to be an asset for the students in designing and creating the best competition robots possible. East Islip Middle School technology education students were also invited to watch and study some of the matches live via Google Classroom, to help make them more familiar with the high school’s robotics program. The high school’s robotics students will be studying programming next, so that they can design
and create new robots that can drive autonomously for a forthcoming new modified game. “This year’s robotics classes really pushed the envelope and made excellent competition robots,” Connell said. “I’ve never seen top performances like this before and I’m looking forward to seeing what they will come up with next.” “As a person who has a very serious interest in a career in robotic engineering, I feel like this class has provided me with a good start on that path,” said high schooler Kaitlyn McCall. “Competing against my peers and having my robot perform at such a high level was an amazing experience.” EAST ISLIP WRESTLERS EARN LEAGUE TITLE - East Islip High School’s wrestling team clinched the League V title on Feb. 23 with a 46-12 victory over Kings Park. External Diploma Program The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a competency based
program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without

To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check
your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great cross-reference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make
sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks:

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Dorothy Delia is an 87 year old resident of West Babylon. She worked and volunteered for the Salvation Army in Ridegewood and Queens for over 20 years. Prior to COVID, she was very involved in her church by coordinating the prayer chain, greeting worshippers and helping at fundraisers and events. Dorothy desperately needed dental work, but because she lives on a fixed income, she could not afford it on her own. She had been losing teeth and could only eat soft foods. She wished for dental work, which was granted! In February 2020, she got a new healthy smile! Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable
conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Please note, when going to grant a wish, this foundation takes all the necessary safety precautions. If you would like to get involved with The Twilight Wish Foundation, you can! At Commack Road, an entire Kindness Month in January culminated in a Kindness Spirit Week. Commack Road’s Spirit Week activities began with a Monday in pajamas, and also included a friendship bulletin board with heartshaped words and a “Kind & Seek” challenge encouraging students to seek acts of kindness. Teachers Jill Bohnaker, Cheryl Brown, Sara Comiskey and Shannon Dignam created a Great Kindness Challenge poster contest and bulletin board. Snowballs on the board recognized acts of kindness that students caught their classmates doing over the prior month. The week
ended with students and staff wearing purple for P.S. I Love You Day and its “Together We Will Rise” theme, led by the fourthgrade class of teachers Meghan Flynn and Christine LeMaire. “We completed acts of kindness throughout the month of January as a schoolwide kindness initiative,” Commack Road Principal James Cameron said. “It was wonderful to watch the students come together to spread kindness and define success at CRES.” “Even though the week ended, our class continues to encourage everyone to show kindness and compassion always,” LeMaire said. As a result of these many kindness activities, Islip was recognized as a Kindness Certified School District by Great Kindness Challenge organizers Kids for Peace.

The funds were raised during Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar’s 22nd annual fundraising campaign in support of the Marine Corps Reserve Toys
for Tots program, which distributes new toys to as many underprivileged children as possible to provide a tangible sign of hope during the Christmas season. This year, Applebee’s also introduced its own “Tots for Tots” program, offering guests an additional way to donate by adding tater tots to any order for just $3, with each sale going directly to the organization. Since
its inception, Applebee’s locations owned and operated by Doherty Enterprises have raised $4.9 million through its Toys for Tots fundraising campaign to benefit local communities in Florida, Georgia, Long Island and New Jersey. In just 2020 alone, Toys for Tots distributed 20.2 million toys to 7.4 million children.

At Islip’s Commack Road and Maud S. Sherwood elementary schools, Kindness Week brought students and staff together to enhance socialemotional learning and school unity.
