Liam Godbout Named HOBY Winner

East Islip High School sophomore Liam Godbout has been named the winner of the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Award, honoring exceptional leadership and community service. He will represent East Islip at this year’s HOBY New York Metro Leadership Seminar conference, to be held in June.

HOBY is an annual leadership seminar open to sophomore students across America, providing more than 12,000 students the opportunity to engage in leadership development activities and seminars around the country. As in previous years, the cost for East Islip’s winning student to attend the seminar will be covered

“It is such an honor to have artwork shown in a well-known museum on Long Island,” teacher Heather Toomey said. “I am grateful for the opportunity and so proud of Kelly and Daniel for their strong photographic works. Daniel took Photography 1 last year

and has demonstrated continued interest and talent in the photographic arts. This is Kelly’s first year in photography and she has been excelling on photography projects since the first week of school. They are both deserving to have this honor of having their work exhibited in such a wonderful, professional space.”

“I really love photography and I am grateful for the opportunity to exhibit in my art in the Long Island Museum,” Waldron said. “It’s an honor for my artwork to be in the Long Island Museum,” Droz said. “I really enjoy photography and art, and I am hoping to take more classes next year.”

As businesses, we were gratiﬁed when New York State passed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) in 2019. The CLCPA provides a road map for our state to reach a renewable energy economy, which will not only combat the devastation and unpredictability of the climate crisis but will lead to greater economic opportunity for New Yorkers as the state creates green jobs and invests in frontline communities.

Thriving communities for businesses to flourish: Thriving communities are good for business. According to the investment plan laid out by NY Renews, in addition to funding renewable energy investments, the $15 billion fund will also go towards improving public transit, public housing, and public schools, all necessary infrastructure for communities to succeed. Additional funding will go towards community-based organizations in neighborhoods most impacted by pollution and the climate crisis to fund local projects that increase our renewable energy supply, make homes and buildings more eﬃcient, and increase resilience to climate change. A signiﬁcant portion of this funding will go to low-income communities of color, which have received historically inadequate investments from the state and are most vulnerable to pollution and climate change. All of these investments will help New York communities thrive.

In recent years, however, we’ve become concerned that the CLCPA has not been funded. It’s clear that New York needs significant and consistent funding allocations to meet the goals of the CLCPA and realize the benefits of the law for New Yorkers. By allowing the law to remain an unfunded mandate, Albany will create an unstable situation for businesses and leave significant economic benefits on the table.

Creating stable jobs in renewable energy, building eﬃciency, public transit, and supportive industries will grow New York’s economy and increase spending power. This is good for New Yorkers, and it’s good for business. New York has the opportunity to be a business leader in renewable energy speciﬁcally, creating these jobs here in our state rather than allowing other states to overtake us in this critical and growing market. All jobs created — in renewable energy and otherwise — are good news for New York.

Putting money back into the pockets of working New Yorkers: Included in this $15 billion investment are direct grants, vouchers, and cash payments to working New Yorkers, increasing their spending power and creating breathing room for families. These funds include: grants to homeowners to make their buildings more energy-eﬃcient (for example, through weatherization or installing heat pumps), transit vouchers for NYC residents and other residents of urban areas to encourage the use of subway and bus ridership, and LIHEAP credits to lessen the cost of heat during cold winter months. These payments will ensure working New Yorkers will have more spending power and more breathing room, which is good for business and good for our state.

No candidate may act as a poll watcher. 2. Voting booths. Poll watchers will not be permitted behind the voting booths at any time during voting hours. 3. Location of poll watchers. An area, with a full view of the polls, will be designated for poll watchers. 4. Final vote tally. Following the recording of the vote by the District Clerk and inspectors of election, poll watchers will be permitted time to view the voting totals. Poll watchers are not permitted behind the inspectors while the tally is being taken by the District Clerk and inspectors. 5. Miscellaneous. Any questions regarding poll watchers are to be directed to the District Clerk, Marie Rogers. All actions of poll watchers shall be unobtrusive and may in no manner interfere with the ordinary conduct of the voting. Robotic Team Competes At “Tipping Point” East Islip High School’s robotics team traveled to Freeport High School to compete in one of this year’s VEX VRC “Tipping Point” competitions, finishing in the top seven and nearly unseating two highly ranked teams in what would be their last match of the day. All year long, East Islip’s robotics students have been designing and

creating competition robots in their respective Robotics I and II courses as well as in the Robotics Club. Their designs and concepts culminated in the creation of a competition robot that was ready for battle. Several group members contributed heavily to the team’s success: Team leader Zoe Elder, top driver Sebastian Gebhard, pit

crew chief Louis Attard, team scout leader Anthony Ognibene and quality control expert Kaitlin McCall helped guide their team throughout the day. Additionally, members of the U.S. Army’s Bay Shore recruiting office sponsored the team’s competition shirts, and Sgt. 1st Class David Nhan and Staff Sgt. Mathew Petiprin attended the competition to cheer

on the squad. “Several of the team members have been a part of EIHS Robotics for multiple years now, and we have grown so much as a program,” technology education teacher Jim Connell said. “It was great to see these students have so much success at this event.”
