St. Mark’s Episcopal Church & Islip Rotary Help Two At-Risk Groups St. Mark's Episcopal Church and Islip Rotary are feeding the hungry while supporting the struggling local restaurants. Called the South Shore Takeout Project, the two groups are conducting a fundraiser of sorts throughout the South Shore communities, asking people to purchase restaurant gift cards so people can purchase a meal for their families. St. Mark’s will then donate the cards to God’s Provisions, an affiliate of Long Island Cares, an organization that supplies church food pantries, senior communities and shelters throughout Suffolk County. The program is expected
to run through the end of March. “The pandemic has wreaked havoc with our economy,” said St. Mark’s rector, the very reverend Richard E. Simpson." People have lost jobs and can barely feed their families. A restaurant gift card will either be a much-needed meal or a treat,” he said, adding that February 17 is also Ash Wednesday and pointed to the Bible story of “the feeding of 5000.” He continued: Restaurant business is down to about 30% of their usual income and relies heavily on takeout or curbside pick-up for revenue. Many are either
closed or due to close.” Said organizer Irene Ross “We’d like the gift cards to be substantial enough to buy full meals; some restaurants have family or catering packages that could feed an entire family for one night (with maybe even some leftovers for another day’s lunch or dinner). She continued: We know everyone is experiencing some level of financial distress with the pandemic, so why not pool your resources with others, whether friends, neighbors, co-workers, local businesses, clubs, etc? If many people chip in, that becomes a big number that can feed an
entire family.” The Takeout Project is the brainstorm of Dr. Barbara Bolen of Northport who, over the holidays, was thinking about two at-risk groups: the hungry and struggling restaurants. A Northport restaurant was offering a family meal ($60 to feed four) and she asked the restaurant owner if she knew of a family she could donate a meal to. This led to the idea to involve local food pantries and encourage others to follow suit, and she and her project partner, Carol Crowley, brought in $4000 in just a little over a month. When Barbara indicated
that she was hoping other organizations would join the endeavor, St. Mark’s Episcopal & Islip Rotary jumped at it and will specifically target the South Shore, including Great South Bay, Oakdale, Patchogue. Sayville, Holbrook, Hauppauge and more. Islip Rotary will be joining St. Mark’s with this project. Their motto is, “Service Above Self.” Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million business and other leaders, neighbors and friends. The organization that takes action with such programs as the Rotarianbased organization Gift of
Life that provides cardiac medical care for children who would otherwise not receive treatment. There are three ways to get your gift cards to St. Mark’s who will donate them. One is by mail: St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 754 Montauk Highway, Islip, NY 11751. Another is for people to also bring them to the church office Monday-Friday from 9:00 to 12:30. Offers Members and Non-Members Free Virtual Tax Filing Assistance for 2021 New York Institute of Technology, who will work one-on-one virtually with tax payers to prepare the returns. Bethpage VITA volunteers will also educate eligible working families about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) while preparing tax returns. The EITC is an anti-poverty program available to four out of five eligible Long Island households. VITA volunteers will work with taxpayers to ensure that eligible families are aware of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which could bring up to $6,557 into the hands of deserving Long Island families. Credit amounts are based on income levels, filing status and other factors. Eligible households can claim up to three years back of Earned Income Tax Credits. Bethpage has also partnered with The Health & Welfare Council of Long Island, which is an umbrella human services organization consisting of over 100 member organizations. HWCLI has teamed up with getyourrefund.org to help people file their taxes online with the help of HWCLI Staff and IRScertified volunteers from across Long Island. This year, taxpayers will be able to access their tax services from the comfort and safety of their own home by visiting https://hwcli.com/ vita, or reaching out by email or phone at taxhelp@ hwcli.com or 517/7380447. In 2020, Bethpage completed 1,341 VITA tax returns and helped secure IRS total refunds of over $1,700,000. Bethpage also helped secure $163,419 in child tax credits in 202O, and $425,256 in Earned Income Tax Credits. Since the program’s inception in 2004, over
24,266 individuals have filed their tax returns through Bethpage, resulting in $26,552,294 million returned to the Long Island community. Qualifying taxpayers planning to take advantage of Bethpage’s VITA program must bring the following materials with them for review: photo identification, social security cards for you, your spouse, and dependents, current year’s tax package if you received one, wage and earnings statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R from all employers, interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099), a copy of last year’s Federal and State returns if available, bank routing and account numbers for tax refund direct deposit, total paid for daycare, and provider’s tax ID. Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition www.babylonbreastcancer.org
The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon. Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon. From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers. In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you. Below is a list of all of the programs that the BBCC offers. Lend A Helping Hand (LAHH): This unique patient service program provides much needed stress relief for Babylon Township women undergoing treatment for breast cancer and all types of gynecological cancers, as well as their families confronting diagnosis and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Some of the services this program offers include house cleaning, transportation to/from medical appointments, financial assistance, child care, massage therapy, meal preparation and more. Pink & Teal Exercise Program: This exercise program is designed to help women regain flexibility, stamina and strength following breast or gynecological surgery and/or
cancer treatment. Clients meet with trained exercise physiologists for one-onone personal training sessions to address their specific physical goals and issues. Gift Of Health & Inspiration (GOHI): The Gift Of Health & Inspiration program includes a free tote bag, which is designed to be a supportive companion to the newly diagnosed cancer patient. The tote bag is filled with items to assist with your mind, body and soul. The items are nurturing, organic and holistic. They are given to patients at Good Samaritan and St. Catherine’s. Scholorship Programs: The BBCC offers scholarships to Babylon Township high school seniors who have had a parent or legal guardian with a personal breast and/ or gynecological cancer history. An essay must be submitted to be in the running for a scholarship! Vision Of Hope Garden (VOHG): There is a VOHG that this coalition started that is located on the southeast corner of Babylon Town Hall in Lindenhurst. Engraved bricks can be purchased in memory or in honor of someone who has battled breast or gynecological cancer and they will be installed in this garden. Bricks are available for engraving and installation at a cost of $50 each. Additionally, the BBCC is holding an Online Psychic Night! Join others for a gallery style reading as Georgia Rose channels messages from the other side! Now, in its 18th year, the program is open to all eligible Long Islanders, including non-Bethpage members. Now through Thursday, April 8, 2021, trained and bilingual tax preparers will be available to assist eligible taxpayers with 2020 incomes of $57,000 and below, via pre-scheduled Zoom appointments.
