The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.

Their upcoming spring season will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! This organization truly makes a difference! See the results from those who have participated:

• 97% of girls said they learned critical life skills • Life skills taught by Girls on the Run have a stronger effect on girls than those taught by tradional sports or physical education programs and positively changes girls during the 10-week program and beyond

SUPPORTING THE INN’S MARY BRENNAN SOUP KITCHEN - As part of PSEG Long Island’s commitment to the communities it serves, PSEG Employee James Domozych of East Islip and his co-workers recently pitched in at the INN’s men’s home in Hempstead. Domozych, a principal engineer at PSEG Long Island, power washed a deck and ramp at the home to make it cleaner and safer for residents.

Nominations Being Accepted for Women’s History 2020 Celebration The Town of Islip is currently accepting nominations for the 2020 Women’s History Celebration. The Town of Islip will recognize individuals who live and/ or work in the Town of Islip, and who have made significant contributions to the Islip community. The celebration will take place at the afternoon Town Board Meeting on Tuesday, March 10th. To nominate a community member you

They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This year’s 5K event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at Hofstra University, where over 1000 individuals will run, volunteer or spectate to celebrate!

other vehicles or cause a crash. Warm up the car so the defroster has a chance to clear the windows. Turn on your headlights when you turn on your windshield wipers. New York State law makes this mandatory. Do not exceed the speed limit and always adjust your speed to the road conditions. Leave plenty of room between your vehicle and the one ahead of you. Don’t try to pass or weave in and out of traffic. Even if your vehicle has good traction in ice and snow, you must be prepared to react if other drivers start to slide. Familiarize yourself with the vehicles you drive before you take them out in inclement weather. Do not drive during ice or snow storms unless it is absolutely necessary. When sleet, freezing rain or snow begin to fall, remember that bridges, ramps and overpasses will freeze first. Be aware that slippery spots may remain after snow is removed. The National Highway Safety Administration also offers winter driving tips. Included in the tips is to be sure your vehicle has the right supplies: Snow shovel, broom, and ice scraper. Abrasive material such as sand or kitty litter, in case your vehicle gets stuck in the snow. Jumper cables, flashlight, and warning devices such as flares and emergency markers. Blankets for protection from the cold. A cell phone with charger, water, food, and any necessary medicine (for longer trips or when driving in lightly populated areas). At the East Islip School District’s Jan. 16 Board of Education meeting, John F. Kennedy Elementary School third grader Ava McKiernan was honored by Superintendent John Dolan for her charity work in helping sick children. During the holiday season, McKiernan made and sold 41 wreaths, raising $812 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Local Student Artist Earns Recognition

Islip, NY – Meghan O’Reilly, a junior at SUNY New Paltz, was recognized by Supervisor Angie Carpenter at Town Hall recently. The East Islip High School graduate completed a mural of an oyster’s life cycle this summer at the Town’s Shellfish Hatchery in East Islip.

O’Reilly was presented with a Town Certificate of Recognition from Supervisor Carpenter and DEC Commissioner Martin Bellew. The 10’ X 8’ mural took approximately three weeks to complete. “Meghan volunteered her time to create this beautiful mural, and we appreciate her

dedication to community service,” said Supervisor Carpenter. “It is certainly an enhancement to our hatchery,” she added. “This mural illustrates the oyster life cycle in a tangible way, and is especially helpful to those young students who tour the hatchery,” said DEC Commissioner Bellew.
