East Islip High School seniors Kaitlyn Donnelly, Brianna Fairbrother, Thomas Henderson and Olivia McBride were recently selected for the Art League of Long Island’s 15th annual Go APE Advanced Placement Exhibition, which showcases exceptional work by art students from all over Long Island. Donnelly’s “A Wolf’s Ballad,” Fairbrother’s “In Your Blood,” Henderson’s “Contract” and McBride’s “Stomping on the Fast Fashion Industry” appear in the Dix Hills gallery’s show, which runs through Feb. 13 and is open to the public. Out of 135 students chosen across Long Island for the Go APE show, Henderson’s work was selected for the show’s press flyer. “These four are exceptional,” said Dan Figliozzi, their AP Art and Design teacher. “They are extremely talented, hardworking and all-around wonderful people. I love hanging with them every day, talking to them about their artwork and helping them elevate their craft. Flu Season Is Underway; How You Can Protect Residents Who Are Most Vulnerable Flu season is officially here in New York, with the New York State Department of Health reporting ten consecutive weeks of widespread flu diagnoses. To help prevent the flu in people who are at high risk for severe complications, the American Lung Association and Empire BlueCross BlueShield Foundation, released a toolkit specifically for caregivers of adults 65 and over through their “Fend Off Flu” campaign. Influenza (flu) is a serious and highly contagious disease that

can have severe health consequences for all, and especially for vulnerable adults 65 and older, and those with chronic health conditions. The new toolkit is a resource to educate caregivers including healthcare providers and personnel in long-term care settings about the flu and the importance of vaccination to protect adults 65 and older. “Nationally, 50-70% of flu hospitalizations were in patients over 65. Flu shots are especially important for healthcare workers and caregivers

of vulnerable adults,” said David Ackman, M.D., Medicaid Medical Director from Empire BlueCross BlueShield. “Not only will getting a flu shot help reduce the chance of catching the illness, but it will also help reduce the severity if it’s contracted. Especially for people with underlying health conditions, the flu can turn into a serious, even deadly, illness.” During the 2019 – 2020 flu season, it is estimated the flu sent approximately 380,000 people to the hospital with related

complications and caused an estimated 20,000 deaths in the United States, which is why getting vaccinated should be a priority. The flu vaccine is the best protection against contracting and spreading the illness. “Especially during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, routine vaccination is more important than ever,” said Erica Masin, executive director for the American Lung Association in metro New York. “Flu vaccinations have been in use for more than 50

years, with hundreds of millions of Americans safely receiving them. It’s recommended that everyone over six months of age receive a flu vaccine, but they are especially important for the 3,026,000 people in New York with lung disease, as well as their family members and caregivers.” In addition to vaccination, the CDC recommends these everyday preventive actions. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Cover your cough and sneeze with a tissue or your elbow. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. The “Caregiver Flu Toolkit” is a comprehensive guide to educate caregivers of adults 65 and over about flu and the importance of vaccination to help protect them from contracting the flu. The Story Of Cupid What would Valentine’s Day be without images of a golden-tressed boy armed with bow and arrows? The arrows represent feelings of love and desire, and they are aimed and cast at various individuals, causing them to fall deeply in love — or fall out of it. In Roman mythology, the boy is known as Cupid and is the son of Venus, the goddess of love. Portrayed as a cherubic and mischievous toddler, this magical boy was purported to be the matchmaker of gods and mortals alike. For students of Greek mythology, Cupid represents Eros, the Greek word for “desire.” He was the son of Aphrodite, Venus’ Hellenistic counterpart, and would play with the hearts of mortals and gods, sometimes leaving

mayhem in his wake. In Greek mythology, Eros was more teenager than bubbly baby, and capitalized on his status as a heartthrob rather than the cherubic status of Roman mythology, according to Richard Martin, a Stanford University professor. While Cupid may have been an adorable imp, some historians say Eros had a darker side, going so far as to describe him as calculating and sinister — forcing the wrong people into lovelorn matches. According to Museum Hack, while Cupid could make people fall in and out of love, he also was once in love himself. In this telling, Cupid is a young man when Venus learns that a mortal girl is born with such great beauty that others start to forget to worship Venus, adoring this girl

instead. Upset about the misdirected adoration toward this mortal, Venus asks Cupid to have the girl, Psyche, fall in love with a monster. Cupid agrees, but once he sees Psyche he “accidentally” hits himself with one of his own golden arrows and falls in love with Psyche. The resulting match does not prove easy, and through a series of unfortunate events, Psyche must prove her love to Cupid and accomplish various tasks to win back his heart. Eventually, Psyche does and achieves goddess status. Cupid has been portrayed both as a young man and child through Renaissance art and beyond. When Valentine’s Day became popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, Cupid was linked to Valentine’s

Day celebrations due to his matchmaking abilities. His popularity only continued in the early 20th century,

when Hallmark began to manufacture Valentine’s Day cards featuring Cupid. Cupid helped push

people together in ancient mythology, and he can even be the catalyst for modern day matchmaking as well.

No Super Bowl Sunday Is Complete Without Chicken Wings Super Bowl LVI is Sunday, February 13, 2022. Few events generate as much enthusiasm among sports fans and non-sports fans as the Super Bowl. For sports fans who can’t wait to see the National Football League crown a new champion, the game itself is a must-watch event.

For those who aren’t fans of the game, Super Bowl Sunday is still a chance to chow down and socialize with friends and family. There’s no right or wrong way to watch the Super Bowl, but some might consider a Super Bowl soiree without chicken wings a major faux

pas. For those who want to avoid such a misstep, this recipe for “Virgil’s Smoked Chicken Wings With Blue Cheese Dip” from Neal Corman’s “Virgil’s Barbecue Road Trip Cookbook” (St. Martin’s Press) is sure to please.

Virgil’s Smoked Chicken Wings With Blue Cheese Dip Serves 4 Blue Cheese Dip 2 cups blue cheese crumbles, divided 1 cup mayonnaise 1⁄2 cup buttermilk 2 teaspoons hot sauce 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1⁄2 teaspoon kosher salt 1⁄4 cup finely chopped scallions 1⁄4 cup finely chopped celery

Marinade 1⁄2 cup vegetable oil 1⁄2 cup hot sauce 4 tablespoons Virgil’s Dry Rub (see below) 1. To make the dip, combine 1 cup of the blue cheese, mayonnaise, buttermilk, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and salt in the bowl of a food processor and blend on low until smooth. 2. Remove to a medium mixing bowl and fold in the rest of the blue cheese, scallions and celery, being sure to break up the larger blue cheese crumbles. Place in a covered container and refrigerate overnight. 3. Mix all the marinade ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Place the wings in a large container with a lid and pour the mixture over the wings. Toss until the wings are thoroughly coated. Cover and refrigerate for 2 days. 4. Preheat the grill or smoker to 245 F. 5. Spread out the wings on a sheet pan and wipe away any excess marinade. Sprinkle liberally with the dry rub, coating the wings all over. 6. Position the wings on the grill away from the direct heat of the coals or burners, and add hickory to the smoker or hickory

In a medium sauté pan over medium heat, bring the hot sauce to a simmer and whisk in the thickened vinegar. Return to a simmer, cook for 1 minute, and remove from the heat. 1 cup granulated sugar 10. Add the cayenne and 1⁄2 cup Texas-style chili slowly whisk in the cold powder butter. Keep warm until 1⁄2 cup minced onion serving. 1⁄2 cup granulated garlic 11. Remove the wings 1⁄4 cup dried parsley from the smoker or grill flakes and put half of them into a 6 tablespoons kosher salt bowl, cover with the sauce, and toss. Life’s WORC Introduces Planned Giving Program Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services, now celebrating 50 years in operation, is starting off the new year with a new Planned Giving Program. A complementary program to the organization’s already existing trust and financial services, the Life’s WORC Planned Giving Program will enable donors to create a lasting legacy that benefits Life’s WORC and those it serves, while also giving donors significant financial benefits. According to Life’s WORC’s CEO Janet Koch, “Our donors are vital to our ability to fulfill our mission. Providing another way that enables them to help those we serve and address their financial goals prompted us to develop the Planned Giving Program. It is a natural extension of our other financial services and will enable Life’s WORC to be a better resource to both individuals with disabilities and their families, as well as a broader cross-section of the community.” The Life’s WORC Planned Giving Program offers donors various options. These include: gifts that use appreciated assets as a substitute for cash, gifts that return income or other financial benefits to the donor in return for his/ her contribution, and gifts payable upon the donor’s demise through his/her estate planning. Life’s WORC Board Member Ron Aghassi, a single parent of a 20-year old special needs child who lives in a Life’s WORC home noted, “When I made the decision to place my son, Jacob, in a Life’s WORC home, I felt like a great fear was released. As a single parent,

even though I am not old and am in good health, I always worried what would happen to Jacob if something happened to me. Thanks to Life’s WORC, I no longer have that fear. When I made the decision to make a planned gift to Life’s WORC, and after consulting with my financial advisor, we chose the planned giving option that worked best for me. It doesn’t matter what planned giving vehicle you choose to gift. It only matters that you invest in the future of this great agency that is ensuring the future of my son and the over 2,000 individuals like him supported by Life’s WORC.” To implement its program, Life’s WORC’s Planned Giving Program has a team of experienced professionals consisting of a Planned Giving Administrator, Financial Specialist and Planned Giving Attorney. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps Yunis started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust services, and the programs and services of its Family Center for Autism. DODENHOFF SIGNS TO PLAY LACROSSE FOR SUNY ONEONTA - East Islip High School senior Chelsea Dodenhoff signed a national letter of intent on Jan. 10 to play lacrosse for SUNY Oneonta, where she plans to major in psychology. Dodenhoff, a four-year Scholar-Athlete who plays attack, is a starter for the Long Island Empire travel lacrosse team. As a goalie for three years on East Islip’s varsity field hockey team, she serves as co-captain, earned AllCounty and All-County Honorable Mention accolades, and was named to Newsday’s Top 50 Field Hockey Players to Watch.
