Selected East Islip High School students from James Connell’s broadcast television class and William Lackner’s video production class recently toured NBC Studios in Manhattan, included behind-thescenes looks into the studios where some of their favorite NBC shows are made, such as “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” “Saturday Night Live” and “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” as
well as NBC’s fully restored art deco rotunda and stateof-the-art 4K theater. Two NBC pages served as hosts, guiding the students through the historic halls of the building. The high schoolers learned about the television production process and had an opportunity to produce their own show at the end of the tour. “This was a great tour for anyone interested in a career in TV production,”

Men write funny poems or rhyming love notes called Gaekkebrev and send them to women anonymously. Women must try to guess their admirers by counting dots that are put on the note that correspond to the number of letters in the man’s name. Estonia In Estonia, Valentine’s Day is a day more devoted to friendship than romantic love. It is called “Sõbrapäev” in Estonian, which translates to “Friend’s Day.” Cards and gifts are exchanged among friends. Wales In Wales, Valentine’s Day
is not celebrated. Rather, the Welsh commemorate St. Dwynwen’s Day, who is their patron saint of lovers on January 25. It is customary to gift lovespoons, a tradition that likely stems from the practice of sailors carving intricately decorated spoons of wood and presenting them to women they were interested in courting or marrying. France Considered to be one of the most romantic countries in the world, France can be an ideal place to participate in Valentine’s Day traditions. The French have an old custom called “une loterie d’amour,” which is a drawing for love. Single men and women of all ages once entered houses that faced one another and took turns calling out to one
another to find romantic matches. The men could refuse the match and leave the woman looking for another man to call on. Women who were not paired up would light a bonfire and damn the men who rejected them. The French government eventually banned the practice because of rowdy crowds. Italy Italian lovers celebrate Valentine’s Day in much the same way as Americans. One interesting Valentine’s tradition in Italy is locking padlocks to different structures, which is called “Lucchetti dell’Amore (locks of love).” Couples attach the locks to bridges, railings and lamp posts, inscribe their names and throw away the key. The action suggests the couple will be together forever.

LI Nets Celebrate Town of Islip The energy was high at the newly-renovated NYCB LIVE Nassau Veterans Coliseum in Hempstead Wednesday, as the LI Nets Basketball Team took on the Fort Wayne Mad Ants during the Nets’ “Town of Islip Night.” LI Nets General Manager Matt Riccardi and team mascot Dale the Eagle welcomed Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and the evening’s honorees to the game, which celebrated the Town and its residents. Mascot Dale and LI Nets Team Hype joined
with LI Ducks Minor League Baseball Team mascot QuackerJack in entertaining the audience with a T-Shirt toss, Islip Trivia and hip-hop dance. QuackerJack and the QJ Foundation were named “Community Hero of the Game,” along with Islip resident and Navy Veteran Carol Squatrito as “Veteran of the Game.” Supervisor Carpenter spoke during halftime, congratulating the evening’s honorees, which included 40 high school students from Youth Enrichment Services
(YES). YES students took part in-game along the high-five line, and were presented with an autographed basketball signed by the team. “This is a great night for our Town, our honorees, these wonderful YES students and our residents,” said Supervisor Carpenter. “Thank you to the LI Nets for welcoming us and for celebrating the Town of Islip,” she said. Peter Kletchka, of the Town’s DPW division, wowed the audience with the Star Spangled Banner.

She settled on Long Island in Brentwood, NY, and advanced her career to become Assistant Principal of South Middle School in 2010. “The newly
refurbished library named after Marie Frederique Lewis Guilfu, the highly respected community leader and beloved educator who touched the lives of thousands of students during the course of her remarkable career, will serve as a learning hub in South Middle School for many years to come,” said Legislator Gonzalez.

East Islip Robotics Team Takes On Beaumont Wins East Islip Middle School’s Spelling Bee In 18 Rounds “Tower Takeover” At Adelphi After 18 exhausting rounds, Logan Beaumont was named the winner of East Islip Middle School’s recent annual spelling bee in front of a packed audience of fellow students, parents, teachers and administrators. Beaumon’t winning word was “visite,”
earning him champion status ahead of runner-up Jacob Zilberstein. Jackelyn Arevalo-Carrillo and Brendan Muller finished in a tie for third place. Ann Mingione and Brian Deedy were the event’s cocoordinators and judges, while Barbara Huether
served as official word announcer. “The middle school conducted another exciting spelling bee,” said Mingione. “Congratulations to all of this year’s participants.”

School robotics teams design, build and program robots for the VRC tournaments, then enter qualifying matches where two pairs of allied teams face off. In “Tower Takeover,” the object of the game is to attain a higher score than the opposing alliance by stacking cubes in goals and placing cubes in towers. East Islip’s students were at the top of their game at Adelphi, far exceeding expectations for a rookie robotics team, finishing 5-21 in the qualifying matches and ranking eighth out of 44 teams at the end of
preliminary competition. They lost in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs but earned one of their highest scores of the day. Comprised of some of the best and brightest young robotics engineers East Islip has to offer, the team was led by senior Sophia Bates, the captain and lead designer. Junior Kyle Kirschberg drove the robot for the duration, supported by other team members including Mike Baldino, Zoe Elder, Cody Knott, Jake Riordan, Jordan Quillan, Damon Swinson, Jake Thomsett and Pranaav Venkatasubramaniam. “I am very passionate about robotics and I am glad we got the chance to experience this competition outside of school,” said Bates. “It’s very validating to design and create a robot
