Both seminars are from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Even in the electronics age, a compass is essential for safe boating. In the “Mariner’s Compass” seminar, Learn how to select and install a compass on your boat, which features are most important and what will work best for you, how to deal with variation between true and magnetic north, and how to adjust your compass to remove most of the deviation caused by local magnetic inﬂuences. This is an essential seminar for all boaters. The “Introduction to Navigation” seminar will introduce you to using nautical charts to determine safe routes, creating waypoints in your chart plotter and other GPS devices, and basic electronic navigation and planning. This seminar is a great foundation for advanced courses that teach piloting and celestial navigation skills. Pre-registration is required for both seminars, with a supply and registration fee of $33.00 for the “Mariner’s Compass” Seminar and $30.00 for the “Introduction to Navigation” seminar. Legislator Flotteron Recognizes East Islip Eagle Scout

Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized John James Lawn of Troop 205 of East Islip for earning his Eagle Scout. John demonstrated leadership recently by constructing the radio cabinet at the Town of Islip Animal Shelter, along with benches

for the use of employees and guests visiting the shelter. His service project was inspired by the love that he and the entire Lawn family have for animals. John is a graduate of St. John The Baptist Diocesan High School in West Islip and is currently

a sophomore at Hofstra University in Uniondale. Through scouting, volunteering has been a way of life for John who has logged in an outstanding 149 Community Service Hours helping other scouts with their Eagle Scout Projects.

won the 200 (1:56.49) and 100 free style in an outstanding individual effort. Jon Stanzione won the 100 breaststroke for the T-birds. Connetquot begins the season with a conference record of 1-0. Coach Alex Scichilone announced that the following T-birds have

qualified for the Suffolk County Championships later in the season: Kyle Gorman, Edie Smith, Jon Stanzione, Tristan Weingarten, James Llewellyn and Nick Spameni. Congratulations on the team win, and good luck to the county qualifiers.

The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon. Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon. From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers. In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you. The BBCC’s premier program is titled Lend a Helping Hand (LAHH). Since its inception in 1996, this unique patient service program provides much needed stress relief for breast cancer patients currently in treatment, as well as their families confronting diagnosis and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Later on, the BBCC expanded the LAHH program to include Babylon Township women undergoing treatment for all types of gynecological cancers. Some of the services this program offers include house cleaning, transportation to/from medical appointments, financial

Legislator Steven J. Flotteron (R-11th Legislative District) congratulated Senior Girl Scout Rebecca Clock, of Islip Troop 1968, Service Unit #44, on earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest recognition a girl can achieve in Scouting. Ms. Clock earned her Gold Award by organizing

a Senior Prom for Veterans of The American Legion Rusy Bohm Post 411 in Islip. She felt they missed out on attending their own proms when they were deployed in service and deserved the right of passage most seniors in High School got to enjoy, although many years later. They had (50) Veterans and

their dates enjoy the Prom held at the Post in 2019. “Since growing up attending events with her Grandparents and Parents who are long-time active members of the American Legion, she felt it was important these Veterans be recognized, said Legislator Flotteron.

The Super Bowl is the culmination of the National Football League season, which traditionally begins in early September and ends in late December or early January. The Super Bowl is one of the most anticipated professional sporting events each year. In most years, around 75,000 fans pack the stadium hosting the game to watch the Super Bowl in person, and millions of people around the globe tune in to view the live simulcast, typically at private parties with friends or alongside fellow fans in sports bars. However, this year Super Bowl watch parties are expected to look quite a bit different. The 2021 Super Bowl may set the record for the smallest crowd in attendance due to the COVID-19 virus. The game is slated to be played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla., and ESPN reports that the NFL is planning for 20 percent seating capacity at the game. Fans are expected to wear masks and will sit in pods separated by six feet. That capacity

restriction would place around 13,000 fans in the stadium. Super Bowl I, which took place in 1967, was the only Super Bowl in history not to sell out, and that drew a crowd of 61,946 fans. While scoring a ticket to the hottest game in town is often an expensive endeavor, with capacity restrictions for this year’s game it likely will be even more difficult for diehard fans to attend the game in person. Instead, individuals can view the game on CBS or stream it through CBS All Access. Here are some ways to safely celebrate while enjoying the game. • Go cashless. For those who will be at Raymond James Stadium for the big game, cash is not king. The NFL has partnered with Visa to employ cashless payment systems for everything at the venue. In addition, there will be reverse ATMs to turn cash into pre-paid cards to use for purchases. • Order in. The Super Bowl is one of the biggest nights for pizza sales and other takeout. Fans can make it even more so by ordering from their

favorite restaurants — many of which have been hit hard during the pandemic. • Keep gatherings small. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization and other public health advisory groups continue to maintain that social distancing is the best way to help curb the spread of COVID-19. That means keeping crowds small and separate. If possible, host the party outside, as the virus does not spread as easily outdoors as it does indoors. Encourage guests to dress warmly and provide heat sources, like fire pits or propane heaters. • Host a digital watch party. Video conferencing apps have been used for everything from work to school. Fans can gather online and watch the game simultaneously, but in their own homes. Share the cheers, jeers and some beers over an internet connection. The Super Bowl may be a bit different this year, but fans can still root for their favorite teams and enjoy this often thrilling game.

This recipe for “BeerBraised Meatballs” from “Cooking With Beer” by the editors at Publications International, Ltd. makes 20 meatballs, making it ideal no matter the size of your Super Bowl Sunday party.

1 bottle (12 ounces) light-colored beer, such as a lager 11⁄2 cups tomato sauce 1 cup ketchup 2 tablespoons paste

Despite rain and cold, East Islip Middle School’s Girls Leaders Club successfully hosted its first Drive-By Holiday Food Drive on Dec. 12. After providing for families within the middle school community, the remaining donations were taken to St. Peter the Apostle Church in Islip Terrace. “I was very happy with the amount of donations we received,” said teacher and Girls Leaders Club adviser Laura O’Donnell. “It was ideal for the donors, considering COVID-19 and the rain. Community

members drove up, the girls unloaded the bags and off they went.” The Girls Leaders Club runs several annual fundraising and community service initiatives, but this year’s activities look a bit different. O’Donnell had a goal to keep the club running as usual this year, regardless of the pandemic. “I expected there would be some challenges this year with operating the club virtually and the limitations on fundraising and community service activities due to

COVID-19,” she said. “I also know the importance of the club to the students that participate and the community members that benefit from their hard work and dedication. It is at times like now that community service clubs are most needed”. During this school year, the Girls Leaders Club also conducted a fundraiser for UNICEF and a Holiday Pet Toy and Food Drive for the Islip Animal Shelter.
