Family & Children’s Association www.fcali.org With locations across Nassau and Suffolk, Family & Children’s Association (FCA) is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to providing help and hope to Long Island’s most vulnerable children, families, seniors and communities. FCA envisions a Long Island where a legacy of optimal health, educational success and economic security passes from one generation to the next; each year it serves 30,000 individuals and families in Suffolk and Nassau counties. Its mission strives to make our island a better place for all of us to live, work and raise a family. FCA has served Long Islanders since 1884 and today its more than 40 programs fall into five big areas of need: Addiction Prevention, Treatment & Recovery Taking on addiction from every angle, beginning with prevention. Recovery support services are offered Islandwide with offices from Hempstead to Westhampton Beach. Children’s Mental Health & Wellness This division offers an array of services and supports designed to promote the health and wellness of children and their families. The services are for individuals up to 21 years of age who have or are at risk of developing a mental health diagnosis. Services are always free to clients, voluntary, family-driven, strength-based, and culturally competent, with location and scheduling tailored to each family’s needs. They also provide support for the families of individuals with mental and/ or behavioral health issues. Prevention & Family Support FCA’s prevention team provides critical services to at-risk children and families including a nursery co-op program,

alcohol and substance abuse and gun violence r e d u c t i o n program, and more, through collaboration, education, and advocacy. Residential Care FCA operates four residences that focus on quality care, seamless transitions and well-managed aftercare services for youth. Nassau Haven and Walkabout provide emergency shelter and longer term transitional housing for homeless, runaway and trafﬁcked youth. Two other residences support children and young adults with serious emotional disturbances or mental health issues. Senior & Adult Services FCA believes that every senior deserves to live with dignity, safety and independence. FCA helps more than 10,000 seniors a year with meal deliveries, caregiver support, home visits for companionship, elder abuse prevention and advocacy. The number of people who turn to FCA for help is growing and with it, the need for donations to close gaps in government funding. FCA’s programs and services are greatly enhanced by the involvement of others, whether through donations of time or money, and welcome the help of all Long Islanders to further its mission. East Islip High School photography students Naomy Mukai, Luciana Ponciolo, Kelly Waldron and Kaylee Wilko were chosen to participate in the annual High School Art Competition at Suffolk County Community College. Their work was displayed in the Sagtikos Art Gallery in the college’s Sagtikos Arts and Sciences Center. More than 100 students from 16 different schools submitted works for this competition. “Being at my first

showcase, seeing all the artwork and touring Suffolk’s new art center was a great overall experience for me,” Waldron said. “I am so thankful that Suffolk gave me the opportunity to display my art for the first time,” Mukai said. “It was an honor to be chosen for this opportunity by my art teachers. Being able to see the new facilities in person, especially the darkroom with Mrs. Singh and Mrs. Toomey, was an amazing experience.”

“We are very thankful to Suffolk County Community College for offering our students the opportunity to display their talents,” Singh said. “Naomy is an incredibly talented photo student, and I am so proud of her work.” “I am so proud of all of the students and am so excited we are finally able to celebrate and hang physical artworks in a professional gallery space,” Toomey said. “Being able to see artwork in person is an experience we have all missed.”

The South Shore Audubon Society is beginning now to accept applications for a $1000 award, the Evelyn and Jerry Bishop Environmental Scholarship 2022. College juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or

HS Teacher Patsy Lester Competes On “Jeopardy!” East Islip High School social studies teacher and mock trial team coach Patsy Lester appeared as a contestant on the “Jeopardy!” game show on Jan. 7, finishing in second place and winning $2,000. Lester lost to the superchampion Amy Schneider, who at that time had won 28 times and earned over $1 million dollars. “I first tried out by taking the online contestant test back in March 2020 when we were on lockdown,” Lester said. “I took the test for fun. I’ve always been a ‘Jeopardy!’ fan but never expected to actually get on the show.” After she took the test, Lester was told she had a qualifying score. Over the next year, she was contacted multiple times to take more tests, be interviewed and play a practice game, all via Zoom. The show finally called Lester in August 2021 and asked her to fly out to Los Angeles to appear on the show. “I thought it was a prank call at first,” Lester said. “Jeopardy!” films multiple shows per day, well in advance of the air dates, and on Lester’s filming day, hers was the last show. “I had watched the champion Amy plow through

In order to emphasize how to be proactive and kind, the Commack Road Lighthouse Committee sponsored a schoolwide activity highlighting acts of kindness on campus. Third grade students in co-teachers Shannon Dignam’s and Meghan Flynn’s class were each given a construction paper light bulb and instructed to write about “When I was Kind” or “I saw someone doing something

kind.” After the lightbulbs were colored, they were hung on the class’s bulletin board to resemble strings of lights. As peers passed the Light Up the World with Kindness bulletin board, they were able to read about all kind acts by fellow students.
