The Suffolk County Community College Cheer Team placed second in the Open All Girl Division at the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) Nationals held on January 13th at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Disney World. Suffolk faced a tough division of 12 teams. Six

went on to the finals. Ten of the 12 other colleges Suffolk competed against were four-year institutions. In past three years, Suffolk has brought home a bronze and two silver medals. The difference between first and second place at last year’s Nationals was 11.2, this year it was .8. “I’m extremely proud

of the accomplishments made by this year’s team. They pushed through every obstacle with determination and perseverance. The planning and the rebuilding has already begun for nationals 2019 and the Sharks will be ready to return full force,” said Head Coach Gina Caputo.”

Councilman Cochrane - a Navy veteran - has spearheaded the Town’s efforts to better serve those who have protected our nation. One of the programs is the PFC Joseph P. Dwyer Project, a PTSD support service group aimed at helping veterans cope with PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The program, which began in 2012, has met with success and praise by the veteran community. “PTSD impacts many veterans returning from overseas deployments and can have a serious and detrimental effect on their lives,” said Councilman Cochrane. “This is a unique program that can make a real difference and provide support to those who have sacrificed so much.” The PFC Joseph P. crew members Robert Heller IV, Eddie Sallie and Zach Wenksus ensured that Embers ran smoothly, while baristas John DiOrio, Rob Iadanza and Kim Villano served up hot coffee and snacks to the more than 500 students who attended this year’s show. “This was my third year being a part of the event,” said Camlet. “I feel like I can safely say that this was my favorite year by far. I love being a part of this crew.”

and ice rink. “The best part of the field trip was the tour of NBC Studios,” said Leach. During this segment, the students got to see the stages used for “Saturday Night Live,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and “Late Night With Seth Meyers” while

soaking up behind-thescenes information and gossip from their tour guides, the NBC pages. The tour ended with an interactive video where the students were able to participate in an Olympic broadcast production.

Islip High School’s varsity basketball team recently honored a respected former senior captain, welcoming a huge crowd to the second annual Anil John Tip-Off Classic. John, a three-year varsity basketball player and member of Islip’s Class of 2015, lost his life in a tragic accident on October 6th, 2015. After John’s death, his uniform number

22 was retired forever in the basketball program, and the team collaborated with the Islip Booster Club to rename their annual tournament. A memorial scholarship in John’s name was also established, funded with tournament T-shirt sales. “From the students to coaches, teams, teachers, administrators, food services staff, custodians

and community members, just about everyone comes together to remember Anil,” said Athletic Director John Sparacio. “He inspired and touched the hearts of everyone who met him. He had a great passion for Islip athletics and basketball and is forever our teammate and friend.”

Holiday Greetings East Islip High School welcomed Santa last month for a pair of holiday events hosted by family and consumer science teacher Kelly Schwender and students in her child development classes, beginning with the sixth annual Evening with Santa.

The high school students dressed as elves to help Santa as he greeted more than 200 children and posed for photos. Stations were set up for different activities, including face painting and games. The classic Breakfast with Santa followed, providing additional opportunity for

fun and photos. “These events bring families and community members together, and everyone has a great time watching the children’s faces as they are greeted by Santa Claus,” said Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer.

Seeking Careers

Islip High School’s School to Careers Partnership recently hosted a Sophomore Career Exploration Workshop event for the sophomore class, following last winter’s similar event for freshmen. The workshop was

attended by approximately 40 professionals from the community from a variety of professions and career fields, including welding, glass design, general contracting, project management, medicine, dentistry, nursing, radiology, physical therapy,

lab technology, plumbing, electrical work, law, finance and community relations. Groups of eight students were paired with a presenter for eightminute breakout sessions, conversing about the professional’s job, skills and education.

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi congratulated and presented certificates to members of the Islip Buccaneer Youth Football team. The fifth grade boys won the Suffolk PAL Championship “Superbowl” in the tenyear-old division, defeating Smithtown 12–0 in their final game of an amazing season.

During the presentation, Cilmi thanked the coaches for their leadership and the team’s parents for their support. He told the boys to respect others and work hard in everything they do and there will be no limit to their success. said KIC’s Executive Director Nancy Cochran. “You can imagine my surprise when a UPS truck rolled up and unloaded 35 crates of daffodil bulbs. I’m so grateful for Dutch Grown’s amazing generosity,” she added. KIC Commissioners Kathy and Bob VanDyke led a volunteer group, which planted about 3,000 of the bulbs at Islip Beach. The remainder were given to groups throughout Islip, including the West Islip Beautification Society, the Common Ground in

Sayville, the American Legion and community groups in Brentwood, Central Islip and Oakdale. Dutch Grown sells a wide array of flowers, but chose to donate daffodil varieties, because they are KIC’s official flower, as featured on the organization’s logo. Islip residents can anticipate a daffodil enhanced spring thanks to the volunteers who slipped on gardening gloves, grabbed shovels and planted thousands of bulbs.

The young musicians in the East Islip School District showed off their growing talents and the results of long hours of practice through a memorable series of winter concerts held during December in the high school’s auditorium. Audiences flocked to the performances by the students of John F. Kennedy Elementary School, Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School, the middle school and the high school, with highlights including JFK band director Ronald Fox dressing up as Darth Vader to conduct music from “Star Wars,” the JFK and RCK advanced orchestras both sharing their experiences through a “Vivaldi School Year” program; selections from the musical “Hamilton” performed by the middle school concert choir and girls chorus, directed by Patricia Bryan; and the

Thanks to an extraordinary donation by Dutch World bulb retailers, Keep Islip Clean volunteers were able to plant nearly 10,000 daffodil bulbs throughout Islip Township. Fourteen varieties of daffodils, with charming names like Sunny Girlfriend, Ice Follies and Precocious, were delivered to the KIC office after a flower donation request was made to support a beautification project at Islip Beach. “I was hoping for a few hundred bulbs,”

Informing on Addiction Dr. Stephen L. Dewey, a research professor at NYU School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry, gave a hard-hitting presentation to East Islip High School students in grades 8, 9 and 10 on January 16th regarding his research on the disease of addiction and the effects of addictive drugs on the human brain. He spoke about the substances that

can lead to addiction, and answered student questions throughout and after the presentation. Dr. Dewey also held a second, in-depth assembly that evening in the high school auditorium for students, parents and other community members, regarding the problems with drugs facing Long Island schools and communities.

“This presentation was absolutely amazing and so informative for parents and students,” said Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer. “Substance abuse is an epidemic in the United States and everyone must work together in order to find a way to control these substances from entering our country and even our homes.”

Peacocks & Pretty Things Beauty. They say it is in the eye of the beholder; but truly, it exists all around us, if we take the time to notice. My love of photography has certainly enhanced my ability to appreciate the aesthetics of my surroundings, from interesting cloud formations while waiting for sunsets, to pretty roadside blossoms that would otherwise be characterized as weeds to the undiscerning eye, to the novelty of light and shadow as it plays out upon a surface. Such is the abstract nature of visual “art.” And then there are the moments when it appears before you in its most natural, stunningly striking form. Case in point: several weeks ago, my friend and I enjoyed a late lunch at the famed Milleridge Inn, having both decided that it was the perfect locale after having not dined there in quite some time. To our surprise, the holiday lights were still on full display, with remnants of the Christmas season in every corner of the restaurant and shops. Having just finished dismantling my own decorations the previous week, I was at once

nostalgic and slightly weary of them. As we exited the bakery and made our way to the official Christmas shop located on the property, I spotted what appeared to be a large bird sitting on the railing of the ice cream parlor. “Is that real?” I whispered to my friend, “Or just a decoration?” We stared intently, only to be instantly startled. “It moved! Oh my gosh, it moved!” As we tentatively approached, we realized it was a GIANT peacock. And with that, no less than half a dozen others peered out from behind various corners and crevices, along with several chickens and peahens. Unfazed by the humans before them, they moseyed to and fro, pausing briefly to study us. Thoroughly infatuated, we wandered after them, attempting to snap pictures and even a few short videos of these majestic feathered creatures. As I knelt down and tentatively reached my hand out toward one especially beautiful specimen, my friend grabbed my phone to

capture the sight. The bird cocked his head slightly, examining me carefully, then strode purposefully toward me. Unsure if he was planning to sit on my lap or - more likely - to take a sizable bite out of me, I froze, backing away slightly. “Did you get the picture?” I nervously called to my friend. “Yes, I think I took about 27 of them,” she replied giggling. Alright then, no sense pushing my luck. I quickly stood up as the peacock stared at me, seemingly perplexed. “Sorry pretty bird, thanks for the photo op.” And with that, he fluttered his massive wings and took off, soaring to a nearby tree branch. By that point, a small crowd had gathered around us, amazed that this one bird had taken such an apparent liking to me. A little boy exclaimed to his parents, “Wow, they fly???” Peering up at the bird, now perched overhead, my friend and I looked at each other in utter amazement. “That,” I said, “was clearly the highlight of the day.” Beauty. It’s everywhere.

Keynote Address Continued From 7 In his remarks, Supervisor Lupinacci described the path that took him to his current post, leading a town of 210,00 residents: his decision to major in government in college and to pursue law and business graduate degrees; internships that reinforced his career choice; election to the South Huntington school board and the state Assembly before deciding to run for Huntington supervisor last year after the longtime incumbent, Frank Petrone, announced his retirement. “I felt that all of my experiences...my education....my time as a government intern and staffer...my school board service...and my tenure on the state legislature...had prepared me for the job. I was excited about the prospect of giving back to a community that has given me so much,” the Supervisor said. He added, “I have been in office for three weeks now. Each day, I learn more about how this complex and diverse Town of 210,000 people functions. And I hope and believe I will continue to learn as long as I hold this job. The Town will only grow if I continue to grow. And I will grow by listening and learning.” He concluded: “As you leave this ceremony, diploma in hand, think about how much you have accomplished and smile. You are all off to an excellent start. Continue working hard, and you should get to where you want to be. LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” . . . this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry that reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. They operate a very impressive Food Outreach weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www. LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile manner because the Gospel

tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. Sixth-graders at Islip Middle School recently “traveled” to Egypt via Skype as part of their study of ancient civilizations, communicating with an Egyptian educator about topics like the Nile River,

Egyptian monuments ,and habitat and wildlife in Egypt and asking her questions about life in Egypt, past and present. The activity was coordinated by technology specialist Tim Brush.

“Advances in technology now afford us opportunities for exciting authentic learning experiences that truly bring history to life, such as this,” said Assistant Principal Bryan Miltenberg.

The students are currently enrolled in Joy Taylor’s photography class and Heather Toomey’s electronic illustration class.

Work by the 10 terrific student-artists was on display as they attended a reception in the Captree Commons Building at the college’s Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood on December 14th, with friends, family and teachers in attendance. “These students are some of the most dedicated in my class, and I’m so happy they showcased their outstanding photographs in this show,” said Taylor. “I’m fortunate to work with such great kids.”
