THE BOHLSEN GALLERY

In January, the Gallery will feature Bill Kuchler of West Islip. Mr. Kuchler specializes in realistic watercolors and acrylics inspired by places he has visited in the Northeast and here on Long Island. He endeavors to transform the focus on these overlooked settings, compelling the viewer to consider them from a new perspective. Come fall in love with these unforgettable paintings.

The Lego Collection of Stella Ribando will be featured in the display cases for January. Stella is a 3rd grader at JFK Elementary School in East Islip and has been building Legos since she was 3 years old. Stella has continued to grow her lego collection and build very intricate/advanced sets that are for adults. You don’t want to miss this display!

In February, the Gallery will feature Michael John Stillwell of Great River. Mr. Stillwell uses oil paint to capture beautiful and unique images. Although he specializes in landscape paintings, he is well versed in a variety of painting styles and subjects. Stop in to see the beautiful art presented by this local artist.

Islip High School Introduces Freshmen To Club Offerings

Islip High School’s Buccaneer University program recently hosted a Club Fair for freshmen. Buccaneer University adviser Nicole Hall and Assistant Principal Meghan Stern worked with the school’s Peer Ambassadors to design an event to help match current ninth graders with clubs and activities that may interest them.

The Peer Ambassadors created questions for their mentor groups, prompting members of the Class of 2026 to respond to “Would

You Rather?” and “Who is Most Likely To...?” as well as a segment on Islip High School Teacher Trivia.

More than 25 club advisers and their representatives manned tables for the clubs, where interested students could find informational flyers and promotional materials.

Peer Ambassadors and their freshmen mentees rotated between the auditorium, where mentors connected with the underclassmen and provided guidance for getting involved based on their interests, and the

cafeteria, where they visited tables for each of the clubs.

Each freshman was given a personalized club passport, earning stamps based on meaningful interactions with club representatives.

“The turnout and interest of our students was phenomenal,” Assistant Principal Lisa Ward said. “I’m so very proud of our Buccaneer University mentors. Buccaneer University continues to thrive and has come a long way since its inception.”

Alexander Romeo Named To All-County Percussion Ensemble

Islip High School senior Alexander Romeo has accepted a position in the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association’s prestigious All-County Percussion Ensemble. The honors music ensemble, consisting of the 15 best young percussionists from across Suffolk County, will perform on Feb. 3 at the SCMEA Day of Percussion.

During his time at Islip High School, Romeo

has been involved in the school’s concert band, wind ensemble, jazz ensemble and marching band. He performs on multiple instruments and has prepared challenging solos for the New York State School Music Association festival every year he has been involved.

“Alexander Romeo has been a member of the Fine and Performing Arts Department family since

his start in fourth grade,” said Steven Campanella, the Islip High School band director who nominated Romeo. “He has always been a natural leader, a responsible student and friend to all in each group he has participated in. As a percussionist, Alex has always stepped up to the challenge and taken every opportunity offered to him. He truly exemplifies Islip Pride.”

The Charity of the Month for January is Pal-O-Mine Equestrian

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian is a local non-profit organization that began in 1995 as a therapeutic horseback riding program for individuals with disabilities and other vulnerable populations. They grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today!

“2023 will be a year of physical growth with our new educational center and treatment clinic, as well as spiritual growth by continuing to serve the many who need our 13 acre farm and herd to help them heal from trauma, grow in personal strength and learn new things to brighten their future,” said Lisa Gatti, Founder of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian. The organization will be o ering various events throughout 2023, some of which are noted below.

February 15th they will kick-o a 3 month virtual Hay Drive Fundraiser. “We’ve been holding this Fundraiser once a year for 3 years now because in the last few years the cost of hay has tripled,” said Lisa. “Every penny donated through this fundraiser goes directly to helping us buy hay for our herd. I’d like to warmly thank everyone in advance for their support and donations, it truly helps us more than you know.” This year they are proud to o er a new text to donate feature. Additionally, May 3rd through May 7th from 9:30AM-2:30PM they are holding their annual J-STEP Spring Craft Fair at their farm, located at 829 Old Nichols Road in Islandia.

J-STEP, which stands for Job Security Through Equine Partnership, is their Vocational Program. The program o ers a paid internship that runs 5 days per week for people with disabilities who are 18 years or older. Every item showcased at this fair is handcrafted by the J-STEP interns.

Lastly, May 4th from 6PM-9PM they will hold a Stable Spirits Art Show and Auction in their barn. This will be a night you won’t want to miss, filled with local wine and cheese, creativity and philanthropy!

Pal-O-Mine will proudly feature up and coming artists in individual “stalls” in the barn and proceeds from each sale will go towards building their new educational center and clinic.

Honors Two Accomplished Students

Two accomplished East Islip students – East Islip High School junior Kelsey Kreuscher and East Islip Middle School sixth grader Ava McKiernan – were recognized at a recent East Islip School District’s meeting. They were congratulated by the board and presented with certificates by Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Personnel Paul Manzo.

Kreuscher was honored for becoming the first county champion in the history of the Connetquot/ East Islip girls diving program. She took first place at the Suffolk County Diving Championships on Nov. 2, and placed 14th at the New York State Diving Championships on Nov. 18 in Rochester, earning her All-State honors.

McKiernan was honored for her charitable work as the founder of Ava’s Wreaths of Joy, which for the last four years, has given back to Long Island veterans for the holidays. She sold more than 150 unique handmade wreaths, raising funds for her chosen charity this year, Bravo Foxtrot United Veterans, which helps local homeless veterans with permanent housing, food and jobs.

Fundraiser To Support East Islip St. Patrick’s Day Parade Is Set

The Local Hibernians Inc. are pleased to announce that the annual John P. Reilly East Islip St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held on Sunday, March 5, 2023, led by the parade’s Grand Marshal, Tom McHugh, and the Ladies Aide to the Grand Marshal, Patricia Fitzpatrick. The parade will step off at 2:00

pm from the East Islip Public Library and travel west to the grandstand at St. Mary’s RC Church.

A fundraiser to support the parade will be held on Sunday, February 5, 2023, from 2 PM-5 PM at Harp & Hound in Islip. A $20 donation at the door includes assorted appetizers, live music by

Kailyn Bloch Named One Of Top 50 Girls Bowlers In Nation

junior Kailyn Bloch was recently named one of just 50 finalists on the USA Today HSSA Girls Bowling Team watch list who met the nomination criteria for this year’s national Girls Bowler of the Year Award. These 50 student-athletes were either nominees in last year’s national awards

show or athletes who were seriously considered based on season-wide performance, state championships and other state, regional or national recognition.  Bloch and East Islip teammates Brooke Andresen and Dakota Collins were also named among the top 25 bowlers on Long Island.

High School Clubs And Societies Collaborate On Holiday Drive

Islip High School held a successful holiday drive collecting new toys, socks and cold weather items for families in need. The drive was the result of a collaborative effort among the school’s National Honor Society, guided by Kerri Schmalacker; World Language Honor Society, guided by Sarah Ito and Megan Schierhorst; and Athletes Helping Athletes, guided by Danielle Martello and Patty Whitehouse. Additionally, children’s book donations came from the English Honor Society, guided by Barbara

Wagner, and additional toy donations came from the school’s faculty and staff. Commissioner Frances LaPierre and staff members from the Suffolk County Department of Social Services visited the school on Dec. 16 to pick up the many donations.

“We are always overwhelmed by and grateful for the support and generosity of our Islip High School community,” Schierhorst said. “It’s amazing how the collaboration of our honor societies and school clubs can help provide for those in need this holiday season.”

Kindergartners in Meagan Faughnan’s class at East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School made holiday cards for police officers in the Suffolk County 3rd Precinct and the New York Police Department’s 83rd Precinct and Emergency Service Unit,
