Normally, this ensemble performs every December at Brookwood Hall in East Islip, but since Brookwood has not yet reopened to the public due to COVID, the Islip Arts Council helped arrange this performance for the student-orchestra. “We were thrilled to be able to bring music to the community again,” said orchestra director Giovanna Ruggiero. “The students did an amazing job and have worked very hard. Students in East Islip High School’s French Club and Interact Club recently worked together on a “Stuff-A-Box” community service project, collecting enough winter necessities to provide 22 gifts for residents at the New Hope Rising Recovery and Wellness Center in Westhampton Beach. Irene Cummings Turns 100 Years Young Irene Cummings has seen a lot in her 100 years on this blue marble. Cummings, who was born New Year’s Day, 1922, enjoyed a long marriage to Edward Cummings and together they raised three daughters and four sons. Brooklynite Irene, who was working as a telephone operator for The New York Telephone Company in Manhattan, met Edward through his oldest brother, who thought they’d be a good match. Joe was right, as Irene and Edward, who married in 1943, were happily married for 63 years. Edward, a former U.S. Marine, also was a retired New York City Police officer. Irene, who for many years was a stayat-home mom, often joked that she couldn’t have raised four sons if she hadn’t had three daughters first, remembers youngest daughter Barbara Ruggiero of East Islip. Irene never learned to drive, so Edward would drive her to work before they married and acted as her chauffeur throughout their marriage. After retiring from the Police Department, he went to work for Pan Am and that’s when the family became world travelers, thanks to his job perk of free airline tickets for the whole family. “We all flew for free,” Ruggiero says. Irene and Edward saw a lot of the world and were particularly fond of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Spain, Majorca and Russia, which they visited multiple times. In fact, they were among the first to visit Russia when it reopened to the world. It was their goal to see as much of the world as they could. In between taking to the air, Irene worked at a children’s clothing store. Edward often said she took her paycheck in clothing, bringing home gifts for her 24 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

“They were the most beautiful clothing,” Ruggiero remembers. “But Dad never complained about taking her to work and picking her up. They had a great relationship. I remember her saying they were such good friends.” The two eventually moved to Sarasota, Fla., where they lived for 18 years until Edward became sick with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. The children, who all lived in New York, asked them to come back North so the children could assist with his care. He died in 2006. Irene lived on her own until two years ago when walking became an issue after an adverse reaction to some medicine she was taking. She now is a long-term care patient at Momentum at South Bay for Rehabilitation and Nursing in East Islip. Ruggiero says part of her mom’s secret to longevity is likely that she doesn’t worry much and never did.

“I remember when we’d go on vacation out to Shelter Island and some of us kids would go out on a boat all day and all she’d say is be home in time for dinner,” Ruggiero says. “That was one of the few things she was a stickler about, that we all ate meals together.”

Board Of Education Celebrates High School Success Stories

East Islip High School students’ academic and athletic successes were celebrated at a recent board of education meeting, led by Principal Mark Bernard. Junior Sarah Vasquez was honored for earning two College Board awards, for the National Indigenous Recognition Program and National Hispanic Recognition Program. These designations required Vasquez to earn a 3.5 or higher GPA and score in the top 10% in the state on the PSAT. Senior Chiara Mosca

was recognized for her AP Research perfect score, seniors Ryan Affuant and Jake Thompsett were recognized for being named National Merit Commended Students, and senior Jessica Peluso was recognized for being a Scholar-Athlete three years in a row and earning All-County and All-Conference honors in basketball, field hockey and lacrosse. Last but not least, the school’s mock trial team – Emily Blair, Victoria Crowell, Nicole Espinosa, Bella Fantauzzi, Julia Fink, Stephanie Finley,

College juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or
