Science Students Participate In Stony Brook’s WISE Program Seven Islip High School students – Tiana Arroyo, Juliana Conlon, Thalia Elie, Katerina Mennecke, Malik Nayab, Kaitlyn Riordan and Jadyn Zink – were selected to participate in the Women and Science and Engineering Honors

Program at Stony Brook University during the fall semester. The students worked with a robotics graduate student on how to use coding software to control the actions of robots that the students built.

Islip students at WISE also toured Stony Brook’s engineering department and learned about the different types of courses and extracurricular activities the robotics team does on campus.

Members of East Islip High School’s National Art Honor Society recently designed and painted a mural for the office of school nurses Sue Kearns and Debbie Seibert. The mural design was a collaboration of designs by students Taylor Donlin and Maddie Toto. Other students participating included Tammy Chen, Keira Higgins, Adriana Iacono, Andrew Jacobsen, Johanna LeRoux, McKayla Mahon, Annelyse Marra, Jessica Ocasio, Julia Perry and Lindsey Roses. “I really enjoyed painting the mural for the nurses’ office,” Toto said. “I’m very glad I was picked to help make it. It was fun to work with my friends on this project.” “The process of creating a mural is a lot of hard work, but it is worth the effort to have such a beautiful outcome,” Roses said. “I am honored to be a part of it and that it will be seen by thousands of students to come.” “We are so proud of all of our members who were able to participate in creating a beautiful medical/health-related mural for the high school nurses’ office,” NAHS co-adviser Heather Toomey said. “Enhancing our school community with artwork is part of demonstrating their outstanding abilities in the visual arts. It sounded like the perfect introduction to 2024. This year is our opportunity to fully embrace “whatever comes our way.” We need to put the pedal to the metal and speed towards success and fulfillment… whatever that looks like in business and in our personal lives. The business world in 2024 is rapidly evolving, driven by technology, and changing consumer behaviors. If you want the checkered flag this year, you need to remember one word: innovation. This doesn’t mean investing in every new gadget or trend. It’s more about making small, consistent improvements while being open to change. For local business owners,

Seven exceptional East Islip High School varsity boys soccer players were recognized for their achievements at the Suffolk County Soccer Coaches Association awards dinner, held on Dec. 18 at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook. Senior captain Jared Kelly was named AllState, All-County and All-Conference. He also was the League 6 MVP, and award that the East Islip boys soccer program

had not won since 2003. Fellow senior captain Gavin Veltman was named All-County and AllConference. Also earning accolades at the SCSCA dinner were Batuhan Yildiz (All-Conference); Thomas Buchan, Dylan Gaulrapp and Alex Vergara (All-League); and Stephano Carcone (Academic AllCounty). “These boys were recognized for their years of dedication to our

soccer program,” coach Raymond Lang said. “They performed at a very high level and represented East Islip with class at the awards ceremony. Congratulations to our senior captains Jared, who was brought up as a freshman and solidified to be East Islip’s best, and Gavin, was brought up as a sophomore and continued the tradition of being a top defender in Suffolk.”

Missed Medicare Open Enrollment? You May Have Options By Barry Klitsberg, Nassau County Medicare Counselor, Family and Children’s Association (FCA) Medicare is a federally run health insurance program for people who are 65 years of age or have collected Social Security Disability for 24 months. It is also available for individuals with permanent kidney failure or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Each year Medicare gives participants the opportunity to modify their health care plan during Open Enrollment season, which runs from October 15th through December 7th. When January rolls around, there are always some Medicare beneficiaries who despite their best intentions neglected to switch plans during Open Enrollment or didn’t know about Open Enrollment. This generally means that beneficiaries will have to stay with their current enrollment for 2024. Exceptions to Open Enrollment Limits There are, however, exceptions to the Open Enrollment rule. Medicare beneficiaries who are in a Medicare Advantage Plan (HMO or PPO) and didn’t change their plan by December 7 may switch Medicare Advantage plans between January 1 and March 31, 2024. If you are enrolled in the New York State Elderly Pharmacy Insurance Coverage Program (EPIC) you are also entitled to change your drug plan (or Medicare Advantage Plan) once a year outside of any enrollment period. This helps people whose doctors have left a plan network during the year and need to find a new plan that will cover their doctors. Another option for low-income seniors who receive extra help from Social Security to lower drug costs is the ability to change your drug plan once every calendar quarter for the first 9 months of each year. Additionally, this program lowers your drug plan premium and your out of pocket costs at the pharmacy. How to Apply for Medicare If you are not yet collecting Social Security, you have to apply for

Medicare during the three month period before your 65th birthday. You may apply for Medicare by calling the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 or on-line at: https://www. ssa.gov/medicare/. If you are already collecting Social Security, you will receive your Medicare card automatically in the mail. Free Help Available Through FCA If you don’t have ready access to a computer or otherwise need assistance, Family and Children’s Association (FCA) can help guide you through the process with free help available by calling the Nassau County Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program (HIICAP) at 516-485-3754. One of our counselors will be happy to assist you. HIICAP is a free service that has trained counselors who can provide you with unbiased expertise on what Medicare plan can best meet your individual needs. HIICAP counselors can also help you switch plans, in many cases over the phone. In person appointments are also available. FCA can help. Answers to your Medicare questions are just a phone call away.
