ARA - Stopping by the nursing home or hospital to spend time with loved ones is a ritual for thousands of Americans -- but are you sharing more than smiles and hugs when you visit? “Your hands are the main transmitters of health careacquired infections,” says Alecia Cooper, a registered nurse and senior vice president of clinical services for Medline Industries, Inc. “This shouldn’t come as a surprise, since your hands are constantly in contact with your surroundings -opening doors or dialing the phone, for example.” Two simple things can go a long way toward ensuring that you’re not sharing bacteria along with your special treats -keeping your hands clean and making sure you are cleaning them correctly. Just as important is making sure you are covering the areas of your hands that are likely to have the greatest density of germs. According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, these include the area under your fingernails, your palms, the backs of your hands and the “webbing” in between your fingers. “Put a squirt of gel or soap in the palm of one hand and dip the fingertips of the opposite hand into the pools before spreading over other areas, then repeat with the other hand and fingertips,” says Cooper. “It only takes a few seconds and you will be getting at where the majority of germs are.” Proper hand hygiene is one of the cornerstones in preventing the spread of infection in a health care setting. Even if the caregiver says they washed their hands right before coming into the room, don’t feel embarrassed to ask them to do it again in front of you.

In an effort to expand community outreach and create the most impact, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and Islip Rotary are joining forces. They will host the Islip church’s monthly outdoor driveby food drop on Saturday, November 7 from 9:00 to 2:00 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 754 Montauk Highway, Islip. Tables will be set up in front of the church doors which face St. Mark’s Lane, Islip. The event is run entirely by volunteers. People don’t even need to get out of their cars if they don’t wish to; they can pop the trunk and volunteers will collect the donations. Masks and social distancing are required, however, if they do choose to come out of their cars. All food will be donated to God’s Provisions, Inc., an organization that distributes to the food pantries throughout Suffolk County including Amityville, The Islips, Bay Shore, Patchogue, Quogue, Huntington Station, Dix Hills and more. St. Mark’s has a 20 years-plus relationship with them. The organization is run by Dana Jahn. Islip Rotary, whose

motto is, “Service Above Self,” is a global network of 1.2 million business and other leaders, as well as neighbors and friends to see a world where people unite and take action. They work to create lasting change across the globe and in local communities. The food drive is collecting nonperishable items, such as pasta, rice, beans, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, mac and cheese, juice boxes, crackers, cookies, salt, pepper, cake/brownie mixes, canned tuna and chicken, stuffing mix, soup, canned gravy, tomato sauce, condensed milk, pudding (boxed, not prepared) jello, apple sauce, canned vegetables and fruit, kid-friendly treats, cleaning supplies, laundry supplies, toiletries, pet food, baby products, etc. Please don’t donate anything that can spoil. Said St. Mark’s Rector, the Very Reverend Richard E. Simpson, “We’re delighted to join forces with Islip Rotary. This was one of the original service clubs in the U.S., and all efforts are driven by the local clubs,” he said. “ Islip Rotarians participate in such important

projects as “Stand Up to Poverty,” which is a medical mission in Port au Prince, Haiti and “Gift of Life,” which builds sustainable pediatric cardiac programs throughout the globe.” Father Simpson is also quick to point out that this is a nonsectarian event. You don’t need to be Episcopalian or live in Islip to participate, he said. “The most important thing is to collect many food donations.” “This is an important issue and we are happy to join with St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Islip. Currently, it is estimated by the end of 2020, due to the effects of the global pandemic and massive unemployment, over 54 million Americans will be food insecure. At least 18 million of them will be children. The food pantries are struggling to keep up and we’ve all seen pictures of those long lines,” said Islip Chapter President, Astrid Fidelia. Pa l - O - M i n e Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations that was founded by Lisa Gatti.

Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. They also offer group programs, individual lessons, c o r p o r a t e workshops and a program specifically designed for military members.

Lisa’s mother was a special education teacher and her father worked for a book publishing company. She was greatly influenced by both of their professions. She grew up knowing she loved horses, but really wanted to become a teacher and work with children in need. Her father would often send her books while she was away at college, and one day she received a book titled Palomino, by Danielle Steel. As she read through the pages, she became inspired by what was written: a ranch that was formed to help people through equine therapy. From that point on, she was certain that was exactly what she wanted to do with her life. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa Gatti opened Pal-O-Mine Equestrian in 1995 as a 501C(3) organization.

Pal-O-Mine is located at 829 Old Nichols Road in Islandia. They grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week, and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of-theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome,

Additionally, this organization is proud to now offer a Frontline Heroes Wellness Program. This program is complimentary for medical professionals and first responders, and can be virtual or in person. The well-known benefits of being in nature include reduced stress while providing a sense of calm, connection and solace. Sessions for this program may include reiki, mindfulness and horsemanship.
