ecently, Brownie Girl Scout Troop 1163 visited Waldbaum’s in Deer Park. There, store manager Joe Fabio took the girls on a grand tour and taught them all about how the store departments operate and how each offers healthful choices. The girls saw a grocery store in a way they never had before. They learned a lot, and the visit helped them earn their Snack and Customer Service Badges. A big thank you to Mr. Fabio!

I would like to take few minutes to say “THANK YOU” to the wonderful people who work at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. I celebrated my 60th Birthday on Friday, April 26th. I walked into the office on that beautiful Friday morning to “60” decorations hanging over my desk, a “60” crown and a “60” necklace, balloons, various gifts, flowers, cards, plants, lottery scratch-offs, donuts and a beautiful birthday cake. The staff of this newspaper is like a “2nd family” to me and I am so very grateful to be an employee of this great paper, which by the way, will also be “60” years old this coming November. Huntington Learning Center will join communities, educators, families and many others on May 7th, to celebrate National Teacher Day, which honors teachers and the critical role they play to ensure students receive a quality education. “Here at Huntington, we honor not only our own teachers, who make a difference in the lives of our students and their families, but all teachers in our city, community, state and country,” says Eileen Huntington, co-founder of Huntington Learning Center. “Educators stand out as some of the most influential people in children’s lives, and on National Teacher Day and always, we celebrate the work that they do to help our children reach their potential and achieve their dreams.” How can community members, parents, students and others show their appreciation for the teachers in their lives? Health System received a $350,000 grant from the Robin Hood Relief Fund in February which will enable the van’s medical team to continue treating people through August. The mobile van is staffed with medical professionals, administrative support personnel and a driver. Patients have been treated for a range of illnesses and injuries, including upper respiratory infections, minor lacerations and maintenance of chronic and acute illnesses. In addition, the van’s medical staff provides flu and tetanus vaccinations. All of the care has been delivered free of charge, regardless of whether patients are insured. “We’re providing a valuable service to people during a difficult time in their lives and what has proven to be a continued and extended challenging period,” said Maria Torroella Carney, MD, North Shore-LIJ’s director of communitybased geriatrics in the department of medicine, who leads the mobile van project. “It’s very rewarding to assist these residents as they put their lives back together. We’re bringing quality healthcare resources from the health system directly to their communities.” Lisa Burch, North Shore-LIJ’s director of sustainability and social responsibility, said the award recognizes North Shore-LIJ’s commitment to the community. “We’re not just about providing care to the patients who walk through our doors but also helping those who cannot get to the care they require,” she said. North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Project Coastal Care has received one of Sustainable Long Island’s Getting It Done Awards this year for providing free medical care to New Yorkers impacted by Hurricane Sandy. I recently attended a Journalism event last week which reminded me what, in fact, it means to be a “Journalist” – and why it was I pursued a career in this field in the first place. It’s funny how easily it is to lose sight of the basics like that. Go to college, get a degree, find a job… then realize, just like that, eight years have passed by and you haven’t even paused long enough to evaluate the path you’ve taken, where it’s leading – you know, minor life-altering concepts like that. Ironic, isn’t it? But I digress. Back to the event. It is these types of panels and discussions

among Journalism’s elite which reignites that fire – that passion to make a difference with the written word, the spoken word, photography… whatever the specific medium might be. During the course of the evening, the question arose as to what, specifically, qualified someone to be a Journalist. After all, anyone can blog, anyone can utilize social media to share their thoughts and opinions on all things important (or trivial, as the case may be). So where lies the distinction? The joke was made that, “Journalists have the ability to be fired.” This is actually true, to a degree. Those whose opinions are not solicited have no real accountability to the

public. Of course, they should regardless. But in reality, it is the almighty dollar which dictates our purpose in life more than any sense of real responsibility. It’s a shame, as many of my fellow college classmates have long since abandoned the Journalism field for so-called loftier, more lucrative pursuits. But what of the fire? The motivation to make a difference? Not to mention, the four years of schooling at a rather expensive private university…But to each his/her own. For me, all it takes is one evening of stimulating conversation to quell any doubts that this is the field for me. Proud to be a Journalist, always.

Applications Available County Executive Steven Bellone and the Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Citizens Advisory Panel today announced that applications for “Round 11” Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Grants are available. A pool of $250,000 is available for partial funding of capital projects located in or adjacent to downtown areas on municipallyowned property.

Applicants must be organizations that represent a downtown area and who partner with their local municipality. Organizations that represent downtown areas including business improvement districts, chambers of commerce, civic associations, historical societies, beautification societies, and local development corporations. Towns or villages who partner with

a community organization are required to pass resolutions supporting the project on which the two entities partner. Projects must be capital in nature and have a significant and sustainable impact that enhances economic activity. “Providing grant funding through this program encourages local organizations to partner with their municipality and find ways to enhance

public lands, improve the vitality of business districts, and contribute to walkable communities and bustling downtowns,” said Bellone. The event – held on April 11th at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury – celebrated LIHP’s 25 years of helping Long Islanders achieve the American Dream of home ownership. Shaun Donovan, United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, delivered the Keynote Address. Donovan’s tenure as HUD Secretary has reflected his commitment to making quality housing possible for every American. In December 2012, President Obama created the Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force and appointed Secretary Donovan as Chair. In his remarks Secretary Donovan spoke about LIHP’s achievements over the years and also described Hurricane Sandy relief and recovery efforts on Long Island as well as the importance of preparing for similar storms in the future. LIHP President Peter Elkowitz and Chairman of the Board Kevin S. Law described the numerous successes LIHP has achieved and expressed their sincere gratitude to the many individuals and companies who have been partners to that success. In the past 25 years,

“LIHP has transitioned from constructing 11 homes over two years to assisting more than 25,000 individuals achieve their American Dream of home ownership,” stated Law. TOWN SHELTER VISIT - Girls from Brownie Troop 1163 visited the Town of Babylon Animal Shelter and brought lots of treats, toys, food and accessories for the homeless pets. They got to meet and play with Jacob, a super friendly pit bull mix, available for adoption, and they had a grand tour of the facility. The girls collected donations from community members and made toys for the pets during a recent meeting. Briana and her family even made homemade treats for the pets! The girls earned their Pet Care badge by learning about pets and their needs, by collecting the donated items and by making the toys.

More than 400 attendees from the Long Island medical and corporate community came out to the Cradle of Aviation in Garden City on Friday, April 12th, to attend the American Heart Association’s 50th Annual Long Island Heart Ball. The Long Island Heart Ball is an annual social event held to recognize outstanding accomplishments of individuals and companies in the area of cardiovascular science and leadership. This year’s event chair, Peter L. Fromm, MPH, RN, FACHE, Administrator, South Nassau Communities Hospital along with his vice chair, Christopher Doveala, Vice President, Financial Services, Leviton Mfg. Co. graciously greeted the crowd while this year’s honoree Paul E. Harnick, MD, FACC, Cardiovascular Medical Associates, President, Medical Staff Organization, WinthropUniversity the recipient of the 2013 Cardiovascular Science Award addressed those in attendance. Bruce Beck, WNBC-TV, Lead Sports Anchor and 9-time Emmy award winner emceed the event. In honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Heart Ball, past honorees that were present were honored in a special ceremony. The evening was a spectacular success and included dinner, silent auction and dancing to the tunes of Tradewinds entertainment.
