Deer Park honored eight outstanding high school sports teams and three undefeated middle school teams at the district’s fall athletic awards ceremony, held at the high school auditorium during the December 15th Board of Education meeting. As their proud family members cheered, the recognized studentathletes were presented with certificates by Athletic Director Dominick Fontana and Superintendent Eva J. Demyen. All eight of the high school’s teams – boys crosscountry, kickline, boys varsity soccer, girls varsity soccer, girls swimming and diving, varsity football, varsity girls tennis and varsity volleyball – earned Scholar/Athlete team status, recognizing their successful commitment to both athletics and academics. Teams given this honor by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association are required to have five players or more and earn a cumulative team GPA of 90 percent or higher.
The varsity girls soccer team made it to the quarterfinal round of the Class AA playoffs and earned the leagues’ Sportsmanship Award. Individual honors went to Cailyn DeMarinis (All-League), Kristen DeBiase (All-Conference), Dominique Guttadauria (All-League), Alexandra Jacullo (Academic All-County), Kristina Kozakevitch (Academic AllLeague), Taylor Maucere (All-Conference), Mollie Rooney (Academic AllLeague) and Julia Santora (Academic All-League). High achievers on the boys varsity soccer team included Salvatore Castiglione (AllLeague, All-Conference), Dominick Cito (Academic All-County), Frank Cresciullo (All-League), Russell Riviccio (AllLeague) and Cagri Senlik (All-League, AllConference). Qualifying for the League II playoffs, the varsity football Falcons were led by All-County athlete Ayinde Briggs; First Team All-Division winners Kermann Azemar,
Jarett Bonser and Richard Keuler; and Second Team All-Division winners Calogero Arena, Ramel Hill and Kevin Loeber. The varsity volleyball team competed in the Class AA playoffs, boasting five All-Leaguers in Jenna Dee, Jenna Doolan, Tara Englehardt, Antonia Santora and Alexa Wahl; Doolan and Englehardt were also named AllTournament. All-League winners Genevieve Ferguson and Stephanie Sinka led the varsity girls tennis squad; the boys cross-county team included Christopher Cox (All-League, AllDivision) and Alvin Sime ((All-League); while the girls swimming and diving team was paced by Daniella Cornelia (All-League, All-County) and three additional All-Leaguers in Alexandra Bisagni, Kathryn Block and Christina Seem. Also honored were three Robert Frost Middle School teams – girls soccer (9-0-1), boys soccer (90-1) and football (6-0) – that finished the season undefeated.

My First Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan ‘Twas the night of Christmas and all the humans have gone home, saddled with packages of presents and leftovers and happy memories of the past two days’ festivities. Me, I’m feverishly swimming laps around my bowl in a desperate attempt to work off the calories from my (multiple) meals and avoid this holiday weight gain I keep hearing so much about. I have to admit, I didn’t understand what the fuss over “Christmas” was all about. All I can say is my human never stopped running to and fro in the weeks leading up to the occasion. Every time she came home – late, I might add, resulting in my dinner being delayed yet again (insert impatient fin tapping here) – she would be carrying all sorts of bags, some filled with food, others with gifts, wrapping paper, greeting cards…
I decided I had better get something to show my appreciation for the great hospitality she has shown me over these last 10 and a half months. I had the human’s mommy pick out an oversized Snoopy stuffed animal, since I’ve noticed all sorts of plush toys around the apartment. The gift card read: To My Dearest Human, Jamie… Love, Your Buddy xoxo And people say I don’t show any gratitude! Me, I made out on the deal pretty well too. I received another gift card in my own personalized mini-stocking, along with a front row seat to Christmas Eve dinner, brunch the following morning and the unwrapping of the presents on Christmas Day. They even decorated my bowl with some flashy red and green bows that I mistook for fellow fishy friends. How exciting! My human has promised me
a proper shopping spree after the new year, and I can’t wait. Although, I must say, I’m fairly low-maintenance as pets go. No fancy castles and shrubbery needed for me – just me and my plant, a generous helping of flakes and maybe a weekly bath to freshen my bowl. Oh, and plenty of humanly love and attention, which I receive in spades. All in all, I am one happy betta. This Christmas thing was pretty exciting, and I hear there are more festivities scheduled for later in the week when a large glittering ball drops from the top of a building. Hopefully I’ll get a front row seat on the coffee table to witness that spectacle! Thanks again to all my readers – your support and fan mail means the world to my little finned self. Happy New Year… I’ll see ya on the flip side!

New Role Models At Deer Park High School’s 54th annual National Honor Society induction ceremony, 49 juniors and seniors were recognized for their accomplishments and efforts that earned them membership in this prestigious organization. After a short musical performance by the Deer Park High School String Quartet, the society’s officers – President Peter Demopoulos, Vice President Nicholas DiModica, Secretary Kalvin Guyer and Treasurer Jasmine Perez – led the new inductees into the
auditorium, followed by the current members. National Honor Society adviser Seth Margolin offered a welcome to students and their parents, followed by remarks from Demopoulos, Principal James Cummings and Associate Principal Brian Norton. “Tonight is a celebration of Deer Park students who are exemplars in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character,” said Norton in his speech. Addressing the new inductees, he told them, “As the role models of Deer Park, your daily endeavors
and successes have not gone unnoticed.” The NHS officers then spoke, each describing the qualities that serve as the standards for all National Honor Society members, which are demonstrated through each new inductee. Following the reading of the NHS pledge, new members were sworn in with a candle-lighting ceremony. “We were all happy and proud to be a part of this important event in the lives of these students,” said Margolin.

New Volunteers Volunteers with special needs lent their helping hands at Camp Pa-QuaTuck on December 11th. AHRC workshop students checked off windowwashing, bathroom cleaning and general housekeeping duties from their to-do lists as they worked cheerfully for the good of the camp. Friday was AHRC’s second time working in tandem with the camp. Russell Smith, an instructor at AHRC, said the two organizations began working together via a suggestion from the camp’s
Treasurer, Newt Homan, who works for Suffolk County Transportation, transporting the AHRC students. Many of the volunteers have a personal connection with the camp, looking back fondly to the days when they attended summer sessions. “My favorite parts of camp were dancing, the talent shows and the camp fires,” said Crystal Concepion, a firsttime volunteer, who plans to return and help the camp prepare for winter in the coming weeks. Camp Director Bridget
Costello hopes to expand the volunteer program to former campers outside of AHRC to further foster the connection between camp and camper. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a summer and respite camp for children and young adults with physical and mental special needs. Since the camp hosts respite sessions and fundraising events throughout the year, volunteers are always needed for various events. Jingle All the Way Continued From 11 Isabella Burke, shared her experience as a waitress for the fundraiser: “It makes you feel bigger, like you’re doing something important,” she said. “It’s fun!” Over 300 guests were served a pancake breakfast and enjoyed the festive atmosphere. Children and families were also invited to visit with Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, during which time they could have their pictures taken with the couple. “This year’s breakfast went much smoother than in previous years,” noted event coordinator Maureen Klersy of the Moriches Rotary. “It was faster, more fluid and less
congested because we reorganized the workflow. I think guests were a lot happier with the service.” As the breakfast crowd began to thin out, the Moriches Rotary took the chance to share some happy news and announced the addition of two new members; Laura Traina and John Gruber were applauded and congratulated on their acceptance into the rotary. Moriches Rotary and other community organizations help make Camp Pa-QuaTuck possible with their event coordination and sponsorship. Thanks to the support and participation in
fundraising events, the camp is able to send several campers to summer sessions free of charge, so that they may enjoy a week-long vacation in a safe, encouraging environment. The campers engage in activities such as swimming, music and movies, socialization, sports, and visiting the petting zoo on camp grounds. Flag for France To show their support for the people of France, thoughtful student government members at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School created a French flag poster to be mailed to the head of the Ecole d’Etroussat School in France to share with her students. Signed by all of JFK’s students, the poster was accompanied by a letter written by the two dozen
student council members, all fourth-graders. The idea for the flag gift sprang from art teachers Joanne Buck and Laurie Schwartz, who directed the project with the held of student council leader Deborah Smith. “My students asked me many questions after the Paris bombing, about the children that were affected,” explained Buck. “They wanted to know
what they could do to show their support. As an art teacher, I know art can heal. Art transcends all languages, so Mrs. Schwartz and I started the French flag project. The headmistress at the school in France was delighted to hear of our students’ concern, and their faculty and staff thought it was a wonderful idea.”
